An exclusive filmed interview with Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. She talks about her life and how she coped with the violent deaths of three of her sons; Joseph, President John F and Attorney-General Robert Kennedy.
Filmed at the Kennedy homes in Hyannisport, Massachusetts, her son Ted and daughter Eunice also feature.
The Radharc team created another first when interviewing Rose Kennedy, Mother of former President John F Kennendy and former Attorney-General Robert Kennedy. No film crew had previously been given access to the Kennedy home. Her son, Senator Edward Kennedy and daughter Eunice Shriver are also interviewed during the programme.
The idea for this film came about after the tragic death of a teenage girl in Athy, County Kildare. The Radharc team discussed making a programme that might help parents to cope with the sudden death of a child. Why not talk to a woman known worldwide as mother of not one but three children who had died tragically and very publicly?
Rose Kennedy agreed to the film after an initial approach through Fr Delaney, a parish priest in Florida near the Kennedy winter home.
As the Radharc team prepared to travel to America a cable from Mrs Kennedy cancelled the interview. Fr Dermod McCarthy flew out to meet with Rose Kennedy and after spending the weekend in her home, Mrs Kennedy was reassured and agreed to the film being made.
Rose Kennedy talks about her faith, raising a large family, the difficulty of losing three sons through violent death and a life immersed in politics.
‘Mother of the Kennedys’ was first broadcast on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the death of President John F Kennedy.

Husband was a serial cheater, he had their eldest daughter Rosemary lobotomized without her consent. Lost two of her children in airplane accidents, two of her sons assassinated, etc., yet managed to push on & not wallow in self-pity, truly inspiring woman who lived to be 104 .

I like your ways of thinking in that my friend. You also have a kind heart in recognizing what Rose Kennedy was all about. She was a martyr & stood tall amongst all the difficulties that constantly surrounded her & that was due to her loving family members plus her undying faith in God.

She was a full of **** social climbing Vatican kook. I still feel sorry though for any mother that loses her children because of murder or disease. Yet she and her pro-Hitler husband Joseph were shallow enough to put their daughter, Rosemary, away and have her given a lobotomy. These people were shallow, cold as ice and crooked as a corkscrew. Many people that were famous in the 1930s supported the The Nazi Party officially the National Socialist German Workers' Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei or NSDAP). But when the Germans tried to reclaim their lost lands from their empire and then some, people had to choose a side. Joseph Jr. died from a military accident near Blythburgh, Suffolk, England.

Of all the Kennedys, I admire Rose most because she was the backbone of the Kennedys. Having lost so many of her children, she still found time to handle these tragedies with such grace and kindness. She took her marriage seriously and was all about the better or for worse. Joseph was a parasite for treating her the way he did with all his adultery but she still stood by him.

I spent my honeymoon in a cottage on the compound in 1973. It’s a lovely place however I think people would be surprised how many other homes are around it. There aren’t any tall fences or anything to suggest what lie up the driveway. Everyone was respectful of privacy. I never realized, back then, what a historic place it was. Truly truly, the Kennedy’s are cursed, as my father used to say. ( we are Kennedy’s) My father met Jack kennedy at a dinner when Joe senior was stationed in London- my father and JFK sat next to each other and were astounded to find that these two young men were not only born in the same year, but in the same month and the same day of the month. ( 29 May, 1917) We too had a large family, but had tragedy after tragedy with my brother Liam first to go, at 20, drowned on a fishing trip in a massive gale. My mother the next year, at 44, cancer, and on and on it went. We are now decimated. Rose is so strong and inspiring, we didn’t have anyone like that to pull us through. 😔

We lost our father over 30 years ago. We also are a Christian family and most have put their trust and life in Gods hands. Not all is easy, and I live far from them all. I’ve sometimes thought of Rosemary because I have a daughter with a disability and I think Bonnie’s life could have been even worse, had she had Rosemarys treatment. I just wanted to encourage you this evening. I think there are blessings not to be wealthy or famous. Yes. She spoke of the family’s dinner conversations. I wondered how many times her husband was home for dinner. I’d have had knots in my stomach with a table full of kids and my husband out drinking and spending the evening in the arms of another woman. I’d doubt I’d have the strength to guide polite discourse of history, politics, and everyone’s developing views. I’m imagining chaos.

I'm so obsessed with this documentary I've been watching it for months... I love JFK and American history and this is one of my absolute favorite documented videos of American History I could ever have watched... Rose Kennedy has such a beautiful voice and loved her voice so much it is so beautiful but so tragic that her son Jack (JFK) died. Do you like there's so many tragedies with her sons and family and she still carry going with faith within God.. this is my favorite video on KZfaq probably... God bless JFK and Rose Kennedy and JFK Jr and RFK and all the Kennedy for their intentions to save America... :(

Regrettably you are largely correct here. The disowning of Patricia over her marrying outside the church was cruel and bigoted. The whole family went along with that. The medical meddling that destroyed the life of Rosemary was awful, but also the norm for the time. Overall, the family of Rose and Joseph was the quintessential hard-hearted emotionally destitute rich family.

No, her children wernt perfect, but whose are? She instilled a love of history in them, and tried to give them the level of faith she had.
