Rosewood Massacre: Families Mark 100 Years Since White Mob Razed Black Town & Killed Black Residents

As ceremonies mark the 100th anniversary of when a white mob attacked and burned down the Black town of Rosewood, Florida, we look at the largely untold story of how a racist mob murdered at least six Black residents and forced the rest of the town to flee. Many eyewitnesses said the true death toll was far higher. The bloodshed began after a white woman accused a Black man of assault, resulting in several days of violence by the white mob that ultimately destroyed the once-thriving community. We speak with Jonathan Barry-Blocker, whose late grandfather, Reverend Ernest Blocker, was a survivor of the 1923 massacre.

That was nothing but colonization part 2. European immigration was big part of that. The idea was to reinforce white population which decreasing other native groups such as indigenous and Blacks or removing their rights. Even immigration history tells everything about it. Even NATO became another form of global colonization. Let's say, colonization part 3.

This is why reparations must be paid. No “minority” group has been treated this way, yet the others are quick to flaunt how easily they establish their communities and prosper. In fact, that only fuels the claim for reparations further. When Black Americans did attempt to prosper, their communities were burned out of hatred and spite. No white mobs burned down Chinatown, Little El Salvador, or Filipinotown. They exclusively targeted Black neighborhoods, and through hyper-policing, redlining, and home devaluation, they still do.

@@mentlinc I'm pretty sure that's not true. Slave owners were paid in full at the time. It's only recently that THE DEBT incurred to pay them has been paid of. That's how it is in the UK anyway. Which has been paid by the tax payers for decades. White tax payers. I have issues with people who weren't victimised in any way receiving compensation. If you can't formulate a coherent argument that doesn't amount to "you raycisss", you should probably rethink your position and your biases. You're arguing that historical racist policies be ameliorated with current racist policies. People who have committed no crime be made to pay people who have suffered no crime because of their respective races. Which is racism. Just as slavery was.

I first learned about Rosewood in high school.. from the John Singleton movie. Learned about Tulsa Oklahoma as an adult in the book "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. These are only the two most well known instances among the likely dozens and dozens of small town sins you'll never hear about.. especially from the education system. "Central Park" was home to a free black settlement know as Seneca Village until they were evicted to make the park. *STILL* refuse us reparations and Black people still unjustly murdered by police and racist civilians all these years later... I just have no love for this country.

Someone had created a map of the 'known' race riots across America. 🇺🇸 Many appeared to occur after the 2 world wars. Someone suggested this could be due to the black soldiers returning with a different outlook/mindset which presented a threat to the status quo or from envy. Imagine the homeland terrorism. 😔 In London the teddy boys created a race riot in Notting Hill, in the summer of 1958. However in 1959 a West Indian Kelso Crochrane was murdered. They never found or arrested the murderers. The West Indian men especially the Jamaicans ensured that the West Indian community were protected. 💪✊👊A plaque on a pub's wall marks the spot where the murder took place and I understand that the Notting Hill Carnival was created to reconcile the community. This event is huge and great but I doubt if revellers are aware of the significance. I'm sure there have been many more across the UK. 🇬🇧😔 RIP to all those who were murdered in these terrorist acts. 🖤

@janette masiello sure we abolished slavery and then committed a hundred years of violent terrorism and denial of societal advancement from both the state and private citizens against black ppl. Hopefully, this adds context to understanding generational poverty in the black community. It's never been about the lack of initiative, lack of imagination, lack of a good work ethic, or the lack of a desire to build. Further disservice is done by not acknowledging the psychological trauma visited upon the community stemming from centuries of sanctioned domestic terror and shameless scapegoating.

My mother don't know much about her grand folks and past because her father and mother didn't like to talk about it...Meanwhile in the Jewish community to not talk about what happened to their ancestors is dishonor. I think Black Americans who refuse to tell those stories are doing a disservice not only to their descendants but also to America as well as the world. Black American elders seem to bear a lot of shame for what happened to them or their parents back in those days but they shouldn't. They survived a living holocaust of their own and they should be proud to tell the story.

Sometimes we need reflection for correction.. later this year in July (11th) will mark the 160 year since the 1863 Fort Tejon march, where Paiute Shoshone people were promised clothes, food, jobs etc… forced out of their homelands, over 1000 started, but only 150 made it to fort tejon. Food for thought.

Reparations for the descendants of the Black people who survived this horrific massacre and racial injustice and for the descendants of the Black people who didn't survive are long overdue. What happened to Rosewood happened to many Black towns and communities across the U.S. post-slavery. The government on all levels (federal, state, and local) failed to protect those Black towns and communities and failed to compensate them immediately following these horrific massacres and racial injustices to help them rebuild was only because the people adversely impacted were Black.
