the subtitles were a little off for the spanish girl in some words. she said "patatas fritas". Not "papas fritas". "papas" is how you say potato in most latin american countries. But in spain we say "patatas". Also when she said "zumo" for some reason the subtitles were "thermo". Yes, you can call some drinks a "termo" but it wouldn't apply in this context.

We have the "French omelette" (which is just whisked egg and salt) because when Napoleon invaded Spain the French besieged our cities and fortresses so we barely had any food left, and since Spaniards couldn't go to the fields and harvest some vegetables, they ended up doing the Spanish omelettes without any potatoes. So, the "omelette of the times when the French were here" became the French omelette.

Why the Spanish call potatoes "Patatas". Here is the story. The Inca called potatoes "Papas". In Spanish Americas potatoes are called "Papas" which it the original Quechua name. But before getting to the Andes where potatoes originated from the Spanish arrived in the islands of the Caribbean. There they found a root crop which the natives called "Batata" (kind of like a sweet potato). In the Spanish Caribbean island its still eaten and called "Batata". Later on the Spanish got to the Andes and found the potato or the "Papa". Since the "Papa" kind of looked like the "Batata" it seems they started calling the "Papas" "Patatas". Photo of a Batata for those that have never seen one - db-api.elestimulo.com/app/uploads/2015/03/Batata-1100x572.jpg

My dad would always mix up certain words and names, so when he'd talk about mom's "rouge à ongles" he actually was talking about "vernis" (nail polish). For the lipstick he'd confuse it as "vernis aux lèvres" instead of "rouge à lèvre". If someone was named Jean-Claude Marie-Pierre he'd call them Jean-Pierre Marie-Claude. My favorite one was when he'd mistakenly call Zinédine Zidane as Zinédane Zidine every single time. 😂😂😂😂
