In Veneto è possibile fare un'escursione affascinante e particolare: la “Strada delle 52 Gallerie”, questo percorso oltre a regalare bellissimi panorami ci fa vivere un pezzo di storia della Prima Guerra Mondiale.
Questa strada e queste gallerie sono state realizzate più di 100 anni fa, nel 1917, dalla 33° Compagnia Minatori del 5° Reggimento dell'Arma del Genio dell'Esercito Italiano. Hanno lavorato circa 600 uomini, per 11 mesi, utilizzando una quarantina di martelli perforatori. Al termine il risultato è stato uno spettacolare sentiero che testimonia l'immenso lavoro di scavo e si arrampica sulla nuda roccia tra creste, guglie e un meraviglioso paesaggio.
La strada si snoda sul massiccio del Pasubio (Vicenza).
La sua realizzazione è stata di grande importanza strategica, perché permetteva la comunicazione e il passaggio dei rifornimenti dalle retrovie italiane fino alla sommità del Pasubio dove correva la prima linea. Tutto il percorso era al riparo dal fuoco nemico, perché non era raggiungibile dal tiro dell'artiglieria austro-ungarica, inoltre si poteva utilizzare nel corso di tutto l'anno.
La strada è lunga 6555 metri; 2335 metri sono suddivisi nelle 52 gallerie. Ognuna è numerata e ha una sua denominazione; la larghezza media è di 2,5 metri per permettere il passaggio di due muli, ognuno con il proprio carico. La pendenza raggiunge il 22%, con una media del 12%. Caratteristica è la 19° galleria che, oltre a essere la più lunga (320 m), ha un tracciato elicoidale a 4 tornanti scavato all'interno di un enorme torrione di roccia; anche la successiva si avvita su stessa come un cavatappi. Il punto più alto raggiunge i 2000 metri e da qui il panorama è veramente memorabile.

This road and these tunnels were built more than 100 years ago, in 1917, by the 33rd Miners Company of the 5th Regiment of the Italian Army Corps of Engineers. About 600 men worked for 11 months using about forty rotary hammers. At the end the result was a spectacular path that testifies the immense excavation work and climbs on the bare rock between ridges, spiers and a wonderful landscape.
The road winds on the Pasubio massif (Vicenza).
Its construction was of great strategic importance, because it allowed the communication and the passage of supplies from the Italian rear up to the top of the Pasubio where the first line ran. The whole route was protected from enemy fire, because it was not reachable by the Austro-Hungarian artillery fire, and it could also be used throughout the year.
The road is 6555 meters long; 2335 meters are divided into the 52 galleries. Each is numbered and has its own denomination; the average width is 2.5 meters to allow the passage of two mules, each with its own load. The slope reaches 22%, with an average of 12%. Characteristic is the 19th tunnel which, in addition to being the longest (320 m), has a helical path with 4 hairpin bends carved into a huge rock tower; the next one also screws on itself like a corkscrew. The highest point reaches 2000 meters and from here the view is truly memorable.
