Incredible how you manage to play Renbourn more accurately than the man could play his own stuff!

Beautiful. I saw John Renbourn live 20 years back so many times I lost count, but he never played this one, despite our repeated requests. Thanks for this Andrew…

Amazing as always! The part after 1'14" reminds me of Eagle Rock Rag by Leadbelly

That's got to be where Renbourn took the melody from. Thank you for pointing that out, was not familiar with this Leadbelly piece. The other piece he played on the show was full of lines taken straight from Broonzy.

The way he played this on that show in '74 was amazing. We needed another amazing player to show us how he did it....thanks again Andrew.

The 1974 show, Is that available on KZfaq? I am guessing it is a part of the John reborn video collection from Stephen Grossman Guitar workshop.? I'll have to check it out, I still have pretty much all of the reborn stuff on VHS. 🤣 Something like eight tapes. And then I upgraded the instructional lessons to DVD for learning purpose

Thank you. I've been thinking about doing a Patreon segment on recording. I used to teach a class at UW on live amplification and recording, so I have a little experience on the topic, but honestly there is nothing special that I do.

Thank you for doing the John Renbourn tunes. His stuff is pretty difficult. And although he released those great VHS lessons in the 90s, all four of them are excellent, other than covering a few highlights he doesn't really go through them and teach them in detail. So you have to rely on the tab and the split screen to learn it. Which is possible, but it's a lot easier to learn with the guidance you provide.

I love doing this stuff because it's like figuring out a puzzle. So often the tablature back in the day was missing so much good info so it's worth having another look at these days.

@@andrewlardner For sure, the art of transcription has come along way since the 70s and 80s. To the point where things are Represented with incredible accuracy. You mentioned in the description that this tune has been transcribed before, but not very accurate. Not to give anyone a bad name, but which book was that published in?

Hey Andrew, gorgeous tune as always. Been a fan for several years now. I wanted to ask you, would you be interested in collaborating on a transcription for a Kottke tune? The tune is called “Bristol Sloth” and as far as I know, no one has ever transcribed it. I have about 40% of the tune worked out, including main riff. Been obsessed with that tune for a long time and could use your expertise
