okay but you didn't clarify something from the CBC video... why was that laptop going to the Genius bar in the first place? Here's the timeline of events, according to Louis: -Laptop has black screen issue -Goes to Genius Bar -Comes back misdiagnosed. At THIS TIME, Louis claims the pin was inadvertently bent by the Genius -Goes to Louis's store, Louis fixes the pin -Laptop functions as normal So, if the pin got bent by the Genius, why was the screen black to begin with? Why did it need to go to the Genius bar in the first place, and how does fixing damage caused by the Genius bar fix the original issue before it went to the Genius bar? Here's my theory. As they have done in the past, CBC intentionally bent that pin. They bring the computer to the Genius to show that a very simple technical issue is often very expensively misdiagnosed by who should be a trustworthy expert, the Genius. Then they bring it to Louis for repair. I suspect they asked Louis IN THE FIRST PLACE to create some form of simple, common damage that should cost next to nothing to repair, but requires technical experience and integrity to diagnose correctly. Again, CBC has done this many times in the past as a sort of 'sting,' but they ALWAYS DISCLOSED IT FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE VIDEO. Then, for whatever reason, this particular video with Louis was edited to change the narrative because maybe it just didn't fit the original vision, whatever, it happens. The real question here is, why is this concern not addressed here in this video, Louis? I love your work but this particular situation always rubbed me wrong.

I covered this in a followup video dedicated to this question. No one watches it though. :( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJZjiJqEtdGlmXk.html The guy from CBC was very nice, but hell if he's going to know pin 1 is PPVOUT_S0_LCDBKLT. Don't get me wrong - very nice guy, but... just no. It'd be like asking me to do your chemistry homework. There was bias, which I address in that video. It's just not what most people assume. I actually went out of my way to remove it in a manner that opened me up to looking like an idiot if I couldn't fix it, as best as I can. It's not my fault the genius bar is that bad though.

If i had a problem with an Apple product, its cheaper for me to book a flight from Switzerland to New York and visit Louis, rather then pay Apple for theirs repair. I would give Louis a 100-200 Dollar tip. And in the end its still cheaper. Im not kidding.

$835 CAD for a flight from Zurich to New York probably like $150 repair price (Obviously depends but this guy repairs super cheap) $200 tip assuming this is all in CAD even though ik it would be in euros (I'm too lazy to translate the most important thing is the flight anyways) for a total of $1185 WHICH IS STILL SOMEHOW FUCKING CHEAPER THAN REPLACING A 2014 Mac Book Pro at apple which is what the customer would have had to end up doing. Apple is a scumbag of a company.

I like this guy, honesty counts in all cases. I’m a mechanic, 24 years turning wrenches and have this same attitude. If a customer brings in something dumb like a sensor coming unplugged, I don’t charge them. Then when they need something big done they come back, and they will refer people to me. That’s how it’s supposed to go. Not the dealerships or corporate shops. I had a distric manager for a commercial shop tell me how much he missed his shop in Chicago. He said “ you can fuck every customer that comes through the door and never run out of people to fuck. Most customers are fucking stupid and need to give me their money.” Don’t ever use a Midas muffler ever again.
@adaptorperish1322
@adaptorperish1322 3 жыл бұрын
Wasn’t that district manager named Tim Cook? Because, obviously, this logic works, especially when you’re keep bullshitting people and making it very difficult to repair some of your own products, added with another layer of bullshit by turning them into idiots, who buy new products, while having basically working ones already. Imagine their sales figures if they’d do the repair properly and cut the ripping off part...ooh, boy.
@Benkenobi8118

I respect that. The shop I use now found a great car (found a bad rad before I bought it which the seller replaced). They also did not charge me for a small issue either. However, when I needed work done, I had to take it to a different shop because the other one was booked up!

I'm seeing this more and more as the company I work for grows and expands. When I started I'd be soldering new batteries onto LED boards because it meant we didn't need to buy in a new board for the customer(cheaper for the customer). As time went on instead of taking apart the crappy dusty PC and replacing parts and salvaging every CMOS battery, HDD or even screws(we had a whole shelf for screws). Now with the company making millions on big national contracts it's a case of "Is it in warranty? No? Well it needs replaced, send them a quote!!" and I'm here like "It's just slow, put an SSD in it and it'll be fine". It's like it's become take take take when before it was the absolute opposite, solder in a $2 transistor and it was fixed for another 6 years now it's NOPE it's out of warranty $1500 please!!!

It seems really silly to think that depriving 3rd party repair shops of proper documentation is going to fix the problems caused by shoddy repair shops. If anything, if that was a legitamate concern, they would want to make sure these shops can access rescources to be abld to actually make the proper repairs.

There are no real consequences for the "genius" breaking something, because he/she works under the protection of apple. And thus there is no reason to do a good job because they are not personally liable for mistakes and poor quality work. Louis on the other hand has his reputation to maintain, so he must do a good job and put quality and effort into his work. Because he doesn't have a trillion dollar company to hide behind if something goes wrong. And he actually had motivation to do good work because customers will refer eachother and come back. Keep it up Louis! You are the spark that will ignite the change that will eventually put this greedy corporation back in their place.

Genius Bars have been screwing customers since day one. I had to fix a friend's G3 or G4? iMac that the genius bar had screwed up the Open Firmware on. My friend said the "genius" kept using the words "Oh, shit" as he tried in desperation to fix the poor little mac. When I got the computer it would only boot to the Open Firmware text prompt. Knowing how to run Linux on apple hardware. It wasn't a problem to load the Mac OS. From there I found out apple had a Firmware update. So I just installed that and it fixed all the settings and the computer booted as normal. Fun times, easy $40.

Second one however... Liquid damage (entirely on me, I spilled a bit of beer over the keyboard), took them 5 days to give me a shitty motherboard without backlight and with CPU temps 10°C higher than my previous board. I pointed it out, and they basically told me there was nothing they could do, the temps were "normal"...

Apple don't repair, they replace, because it's cheaper to pay someone minimum wage and simply 'replace Item A if product does X' than it is to hire people with real skills. The downside of this is that you have a team of minimum wage people messing around with complex $2000 electronic devices . They are going to bend/break/damage things because people on minimum wage usually don't care about what they are doing.

It's just pure greed, that's all there is too it. I've been noticing this trend for a long time myself, even with my very limited computer know how for at least the last decade. Automobile companies would do it too without legal legislation. Unfortunately, the threat of a loss of life isn't a thing when using a laptop if a part malfunctions. Worst case scenario is your screen will turn black/blue and you'll lose your lives work. So it's more on the consumer to vote with their wallets than on legislators to change/make laws. All of the really big companies do it because they can get away with it. The vast majority and very much dependent on their products at this point.

There is a difference between messing up, and just being messed up. Owning your mistakes and making them right, is usually a good indicator that someone isn't flat out messed up. We all mess up on occasion. It's the frequency of that, and what is done in response that matters. By "mess", "messed", or "mistake" I generally use the F word around the shop. Love these videos. Absolutely a genius idea.

My question is: Why did they remove the display connector to test the SSD?
@agalerex

if you attempt diagnosing the board, removing the screen connector is given. Normally all connectors are to be taken out, you can see the host of the channel doing it on pretty much any repair.

@@agalerex actually the port for the ssd is next to the cable. At 5:17 you can see the replacement ssd and at 5:30 you can see the port and space for the ssd in its full glory.
