It really sucks that the customer will probably end up paying for the damage done to the machine. about 20 years ago now in the late 90s I used to repair laptops for a reputable 3rd party repair agent, sometiems we'd mess up and break stuff but any damaged caused by us never came out of the customers pocket and was always replaced with new and apologised for extra delay... I blew a hole in a chip once when my watch buckle shorted something. Customer had a new mobo in 3 days (came in for charging jack short repair (which had been completed). Explained the issue and they were happy. Eventually repaired their old board and it was repurposed in a future repair. Shame not all stores are so honest.

Hey Louis, I am not sure if you will read this, but I want to thank you. Watching your videos is actually what helped me learn more about soldering and gave me more confidence in my ability to solder. While I was not working with stuff like this, I did recently modify a friend's Honda OBD1 ECU with a chip kit and the control circuitry for VTEC. Basically, I made the ECU programmable and added functionality that was not there before. My friend bought a new tip for the soldering iron he already had, a de-soldering iron to make my life easier, flux (it was radio shack flux, it worked and it was easy to get in one day) and I set up in a well lit and ventilated room, after about 3 hours of total work (had a couple small issues and my first time doing this from scratch) it works beautifully. Went from having a car that did not want to kick on the fuel pump randomly because the previous modified ECUs were poorly modded and were dying/dead, to one that works amazing and even lets us data log now. Thank you again for the great content, and look forward to learning more :) Even at the age of 35, I still enjoy learning new things and applying what I learn.

Hey Louis. I was watching your Lenovo P50 water damage repair vid, where Lenovo sent it back to you in a day free of cost. I have a story to tell that involves good service policies but bad/incompetent technicians. I have an HP r014-TX laptop that I bought in 2014. Relatively cheap and made entirely of plastic, so not a very durable thing. Six months in, a cover on one of the hinges comes off, probably accidental bump. I have two years of warranty on this, so I take it to an HP Service Centre, where they charged me ~USD 20 for replacing the hinge cover and the screen back, which I felt was a little excessive, but whatever (hadn't seen your videos back then). But when I went back and turned it on, there was smoke coming out if the left side of the screen, which was shocking. I went to them again, showed them this. They never explained what had happened, but I think they exposed a part of the screen power ribbon. Anyhow, they replaced it, free of charge, and never charged me a cent apart from the cost of that plastic cover. A few months later I moved to a different city, where I discovered that suddenly, certain keys in the keyboard wouldn't work. The wifi performance also kept degrading, so I took it to the HP service Centre in that city. To cut a really long story short, I went back and forth a dozen times, never had to give them any money, but everytime I gave it to them, they would fix that problem, and then something new would pop up. They said they'd replaced the Motherboard twice, given me a new keyboard and a trackpad assembly. In the end, I was left with one problem they couldn't diagnose or replicate, according to them. The screen backlight flickered off randomly. It sometimes happened when I put force on the chassis, and sometimes when the thing was sitting absolutely still. They gave up after a replacement of the Motherboard didn't make the issue go away. It didn't happen when the laptop was opened, only when they sealed it back up. They wouldn't replace my machine though, for some reason. They just gave up. That was in 2016. A couple of months ago, I found your channel. At that time, I thought, why not open this laptop up myself, since it's out of warranty. It took me a few weeks of poking around, but I finally found the cause: the power button board. It's a tiny board, that has about 4 components. One of them is the power switch. It's connected to the Motherboard with a ribbon cable, and I think it has a hall effect sensor that senses a tiny magnet in the bezel of the screen to turn off the backlight/screen when the lid is closed. I saw that ribbon was damaged, which is why it was probably shorting and causing the screen to turn off and back on randomly. Now, I'll admit, I tried to fix it, but I'm horrible at soldering and I screwed it up. And the replacement part costs ~100 USD on eBay (excluding shipping), because of Indian taxes. But I thought this might be an interesting story to share. It showed me that the technicians employed by HP in India at least, were either lazy or incompetent or both. But it never cost me anything except the transit costs to and from the service center, and that's only because they didn't offer doorstep service in the area I lived in. If this had been Apple I might've had to shell out 70% of the cost of a new machine by now, and probably wouldn't have had the issue fixed at all. Anyhow, thanks if you've read this far!
@martinj9647
@martinj9647 6 жыл бұрын
Good story and sentiment. Shame you're in India, I'd tell you to send me the board and I'd fix it for you. If you wanted to get rid of the problem though, depending how messed up it is now, you could just remove the hall effect sensor, and turn the laptop off before you close it. For me it wouldn't bother me at all since that's what I do anyway, but even for someone who utilizes the lid sensor to put their laptop to sleep it's a small inconvenience to have to click a button rather than worry about the screen shutting off randomly. You could also just replace the hall effect sensor with a slide switch or tiny latching button that's opened in one position and bridges the contacts to mimic the effect of the hall effect sensor sensing a magnetic field in the other position, then find a spot to make a hole in the housing and fit the switch so it's accessable without keeping the bottom off forever and you're done. Of course that would require the PCB to still be in working order as far as the power button and flex cable connections for it. Plus the switch thing would still require you to press a switch so turning it off programmatically instead makes more sense probably.
@xmlthegreat

Monkey J I managed to melt the ribbon cable, and soldering those is a pain. There are multiple breaks in the cable as well, and I can't find an exact replacement. Plus the cable is soldered onto the smaller board, while there's a detachable connector on the mainboard. For now I turn it on using a screwdriver as a jumper across three of the pins on the mainboard connector. I was thinking more of attaching wires to the connector itself, where it meets the board. Then I can set up my own power/lid close switch. But I don't know if I want to put in the effort for something that's nearing End of Life for me, since the screen cracked as well while I was travelling. Thanks for the advice and the offer. I wouldn't mind jerry-rigging things myself. It's just not worth what's a lot of effort for me :)

Opened up the unit, got part # of main board and replaced for under $100 with $1200 still left in my wallet. As Regan said..trust but verify, will usually work

Haha I get that. We recently had to RMA a laptop from a big manufacturer (who's name is irrelevant for this comment), they said they'd come fix it at our shop themselves, "wonderful" we thought, that is way easier than dealing with RMA services. After 3 visits of aproximately 2 hours of dissasembling and rebuilding the machine apparently the guy killed the motherboard. Hilarious for us technicians who do this daily, not so much for the customer. Luckily they swapped the motherboard in the end and all turned out well..

I used to work at a mall repair franchise... We just did parts replacements though. But my experience is that it was extremely stressful because the rent was too high, so we never got the resources needed from leadership while our prices were supposed to be super-low, and we'd have repairs scheduled so anything that took longer than expected would mess up the entire day. We didn't have experienced staff at the time, either.

This right here is one of the big reasons I got out of the repair business. Too many people using Apple, and Apple making the boards really hard to fix. Instead of ruining people's devices, I just had to turn down all Apple products. Not a good thing to do when you're already too close to your margins and the majority of people coming in have apple products. Possibly because Apple intentionally build their stuff to break.

As far as I can tell from various videos on Apple products I watched, they don't make it intentionally break so much as they make it almost impossible to repair unless you know the tricks and make publishing the tricks copyright infringement. Then they declare products "vintage" and stop production of parts and repairs at the edge of the products lifespan so just about when pieces start to break from wear and tear, they're suddenly out of production and no longer covered. To make sure people don't just work with spare parts that got overproduced, they also make sure that it's hard to impossible to get your hands on authorized spare parts as a third party repair shop and make sure all the certified ones stop servicing when the product turns vintage as well. Not much better, really, but there ya go.

Well, whatever. If they have spoiled fanbois with more money than they can count they will do fine. If they don't innovate eventually their product will become a commodity and maybe even they will die out. The largest computer companies (Apples of the day) many never heard of. DEC, SGI(former owner of the googleplex), Compaq, all gone. A macbook is about as impressive to me as a $500 walmart laptop. They have tons of competition now and Android is arguably better than iOS.I bet if they started selling Android Phones the fanbois would soak them up.

At 6:43 "I'm going to take your parent's pacemaker and replace it with a remote control"- Oh geez, I knew there was something wrong when I had to duct tape it to their chest. I figured that since the Harmony remote with macros I could program one button with pacemaker functions...well at the very least they won't misplace the remote anymore. Great stuff as always Louis.

Man I love these videos. I dont know anywhere near enough to know precisely how far off these mall “repairs” are, but I do know enough to not start a business repairing boards with how little I do know.

My hardware teacher told us several times that most places like those "mall repairs" dont want people with real knowledge. They want someone that cant fix something in "2 hours" but can sell a new hardware or a more expensive repair. / Also, please rent one of those places. I think it's not only a good troll but an awesome bussiness oportunity.

Bojan Babic That is sadly the truth. The want guy's that can do screen replacements under 15 minutes. They don't even use real techs anymore. I seen these idiot test a battery by putting it in their tongue to see if it has power. These idiot's don't even know how to use a multimeter and even if voltage is above 4 VDC it still won't tell you if that battery can handle the current load.
@R0ndras
@R0ndras 6 жыл бұрын
When I was in school they taught us about the multimeter just to know it exist.. never actually used it in a practical scenario. It's so sad.. from my class only me and another guy end up having some knowledge about tech repair and I know that I still suck at it(only the other guy actually learned a lot and now repairs Apple products, just like Louis)

If you want to get into field, or just improve on skills. You have to take at very least basic electronics to learn how to read schematics and how to troubleshoot, as you have to understand what you are looking at and how to break it down. Then learn to solder SMT. To save you the trouble avoid those Chinese 2 in 1 piece of crap rework station's.

Bojan Babic I would have demanded my money back from that school. It a shame you have schools like this this that prey on people. This is what we call "Pay to play" places. As they just take people money and barely teach you anything of value. Then most don't realize it, as they are trying to get train in the field and don't know any better. Go to a school that teaches basic electronic's and avoid any place that advertises cell phone repair classes. As those place are a ripoff and more likely only teach you screen replacement. Which you can learn on your own watching KZfaq video's

From a commercial leasing point of view Apple actually leverages their name to get below market rent because they argue they attract X amount of traffic which would bring business to others stores.

Inb4 Apple rents the prime space for "storage". Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.

He could use that to his advantage. They rent the prime space so he says he is going to get the secondary space so they rent that space so he finds a third place near by and says he is going to rent that place and so they rent that space. You see where I am going with this right?

With so many places closed i'm sure you can get the rent price down from the asking rent price
@crunch9876

Melpheos1er nope I highly doubt it. I’m sure that priprty is owned by a giant reit (real estate investment trust) who own billions in property and have investors. Lowering the renting price would lower their asset value. And they will rather have 10 percent of their properties not renting than dropping the price. It’s weird but that’s how it usually is.

This is a very good lesson for anyone who repairs anything electronic. You need to understand what you're working on, and a guide for repair on one unit is not a universal guide for all units; which to me seems quite apparent, but not to whoever worked on the board of that Macbook. Now I can give the benefit of the doubt that, okay, maybe they mixed up the model year that happens. But to not check the numbers on the chips you're working with? To swap them out and at no point notice "Hey, these have different numbers"? That's incompetence.

Do you ever reach out to the actual OG customer to let them know that the shop they took it to screwed up badly so they don't get charged for something the original shop never could accomplish? My bet is that the original shop never told them they sent it to you in the first place so it seems like they fixed it and lied to the original customer.
