On February 25, 2017, Steve Hall along with his sister Tiffany and friends Tom and Sarah hiked into the northern Grapevine Mountains and discovered Rosy Canyon and the Rosy Amphitheater. Rosy Canyon was named for the Gray-crowned Rosy finches who inhabit the canyon and the Rosy Amphitheater was named for a beautiful display of colorful hillsides contained in one small area. Nearby is Tafoni Slot and the more well-known Grey Wall Canyon. In May of 2024, Steve takes the Rim of the World drive and retraces his route by doing a 20-mile loop as a celebration hike to end his Death Valley hiking season. The mouth of Rosy Canyon is located at 37.011685, -117.268767. The Rosy Amphitheater is located at 37.001223, -117.253971.

36:40 is an awesome shot! What an end to a great day.. wow Steve you got it all this time, pallets of color, snakes, sheep and plenty of breaks for nature to do the talking. Nice film work. Even without the finches Rose is well named. Alot of work! Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful video, thank you Steve. That Panamint Five Spot plant was enormous - I've only seen little ones with a few flowers. I seem to recall that on your last visit to Gray Wall canyon, you "felt" like something, maybe a mountain lion, was watching you at some point. I'm guessing that wasn't the case this time.

Wow you have a great memory. I was thinking about that as I hiked back through the canyon. But didn’t feel it this time.

Just stunningly beautiful -- very different from my experiences of California backpacking, which have been mostly in the Sierra and Transverse Ranges. I'm wondering: what is the water carry like in a landscape like this? I considered a loop through Cottonwood and Marble Canyon back in the winter because it's one of the few spots in DVNP with more or less reliable seasonal springs, but the lingering damage from the 2023 hurricane remnant made the drive to the trailhead and some of the rock climbing on the newly gouged-out route seem pretty daunting. And I'm imagining that pretty much anywhere else in that region, you'd need to carry whatever water you were going to consume. Still, the moments with the bighorn sheep on the mountainside have me thinking I could probably resign myself to carrying an extra 10-12 lbs of water weight! Thanks for sharing this.

The heavy water carries are one of the hardest aspects of DV backpacking but I’ve gotten used to it over time. On my Last Chance Solo backpack, I think I started out with 5 1/2 gallons, which is my record. I consider the Cottonwood - Marble Loop to be a tourist route, that’s why I don’t cover it here on the channel. That being said, I’ve done it and it’s a great introduction to DV backpacking and the seasonal springs make it manageable for most people who can handle some route finding. Wild horses can usually be seen along the route.
