I had never heard of Dominica but looked it up and found the 115-mile Waitukubuli National Trail. Looks fantastic! Generally I've avoided the Caribbean due to safety concerns.

I hadn't heard of it either but i hiked a apostle island trail with two national park rangers and they both stated it was the greatest hike, so i made a bee line and it was....the people in Dominica are truly exceptional...never a safety concern despite that it's considered poorer by Caribbean standards ...highly recommended

Wonderful video, thank you Steve. That Panamint Five Spot plant was enormous - I've only seen little ones with a few flowers. I seem to recall that on your last visit to Gray Wall canyon, you "felt" like something, maybe a mountain lion, was watching you at some point. I'm guessing that wasn't the case this time.

36:40 is an awesome shot! What an end to a great day.. wow Steve you got it all this time, pallets of color, snakes, sheep and plenty of breaks for nature to do the talking. Nice film work. Even without the finches Rose is well named. Alot of work! Thanks for sharing.

Just stunningly beautiful -- very different from my experiences of California backpacking, which have been mostly in the Sierra and Transverse Ranges. I'm wondering: what is the water carry like in a landscape like this? I considered a loop through Cottonwood and Marble Canyon back in the winter because it's one of the few spots in DVNP with more or less reliable seasonal springs, but the lingering damage from the 2023 hurricane remnant made the drive to the trailhead and some of the rock climbing on the newly gouged-out route seem pretty daunting. And I'm imagining that pretty much anywhere else in that region, you'd need to carry whatever water you were going to consume. Still, the moments with the bighorn sheep on the mountainside have me thinking I could probably resign myself to carrying an extra 10-12 lbs of water weight! Thanks for sharing this.
@steveinathens

The heavy water carries are one of the hardest aspects of DV backpacking but I’ve gotten used to it over time. On my Last Chance Solo backpack, I think I started out with 5 1/2 gallons, which is my record. I consider the Cottonwood - Marble Loop to be a tourist route, that’s why I don’t cover it here on the channel. That being said, I’ve done it and it’s a great introduction to DV backpacking and the seasonal springs make it manageable for most people who can handle some route finding. Wild horses can usually be seen along the route.

Why do you think the Helios Grove hasn’t been leaked while everything else has?
@steveinathens
@steveinathens Ай бұрын
This a question many have wondered. In talking to those in the know, I have heard 3 possible answers. 1- The main location leakers just can't find it. 2- Or the location leakers have found it but also spotted some of the hidden cameras in and around the area placed by the NPS, and thus they realize they can't leak the location without exposing their identities. 3- Or the location leakers actually grew a conscience and realize that a leak of this location could result in damage to the tree due to certain reasons I can't state publicly.

I was an avid reader of your bygone website, which was my introduction to Death Valley, and for which I am deeply indebted to you. I've been to the Crack 4 and a half times (couldn't find it on my first attempt) and it is a joy to hike. Amusingly, it's the hike that I most often find runaway mylar balloons to take back to a waiting trash can. Thank you very much for all your wonderful help. Great to see the family too!

Another immersive adventure into rarely visited areas of Death Valley. How refreshing are the clear skies, cool water, crisp flowers, crunching sand and gravel. Those mule deer sheds locked together were unique. Having the dunes all to yourselves on a totally gorgeous day was a great way to end your adventure. I’m surprised you weren’t buzzed by low flying military craft. Upper Darwin Falls seems equally spectacular as Mill Canyon Falls to me. Monarch and Willow are sure worth visiting as well. This is a well paced and thoroughly enjoyable adventure you’ve shared with your fans. Your deep and abiding respect for Death Valley National Park is notable to NPS staff and visitors alike. 👏

Hey Steve, nice to see these new videos. I suspect we may have been in the Owlsheads around the same time based on the weather in your Quartz Canyon video, however I was only timidly exploring Contact Canyon. I hope one day to complete more adventurous loops in that area, and these videos have been an invaluable jumping off point for me into the true wonders of Death Valley. Thank you for sharing. Happy trails

I nearly made a huge mistake by skipping this episode erroneously thinking you were exploring The Grand View area of Canyon Lands National Park in Utah. Instead I was mesmerized by thirty five minutes of cinematic narratives of a portion of Death Valley completely new to me. Ii I ever trace your, Tiffany, and Stefan’s foot prints I won’t need to take a camera because you captured all the magic with this masterpiece. You edited in Tiffany’s camera work seamlessly. Your detailed and expansive photo essay of The Grand View Arch is worth a separate video all by itself and the soundtrack added an emotional kick. With the super smooth camera work, compositions, adding people shots for scale appreciation, cactus blossoms, to the family experience, and crystal clear soundtrack, this thirty five minute adventure seemed like only five minutes. Well crafted bringing life to Death Valley! 👏
