Your mini-lathe series has been one of my favorite things on KZfaq. Nice job sticking with it and getting it all completed. Before you sell it, please consider one last video making a fun part and reviewing it’s performance. Is it just a polished turd, or is it more than that? You could do something simple like a set of machinist jack screws, wine stoppers, curvy spice shakers, etc.

I'm assuming the controller was running before and driving the old screen as you have shown. If you swap out the screen on the same connector without reinitiating the connection, no new handshake is established for the HDMI DRM protection. Try either to reinitiate the connection or simply do the old trick have-you-tried-turning-it-off-and-on-again? (shoutout to the IT crowd). Great content. Rather than thinking of the prox wiring as common positive, Consider NPN as a normally closed and PNP as normally open switches. The NPN prox is providing +Vcc between the output signal and ground. When triggered the signal output will drop to 0 Vcc. Unless already set up in programming, the conditional homed statement will only become true on the falling edge when the prox output becomes 0. Where as a PNP acts as normally open switch until triggered providing a 1=true between the signal output and ground. The 2 are just wired accordingly. These are not technically precision switches for repeatable positioning like a microswitch. While it will work as a reference for one setup in a stepper motor control, that reference may shift with subsequent home cycles.

@graealex
@graealex 10 ай бұрын
This exact OWON has very sluggish DMM functions, both the numeric display as well as the analog gauge display. I'd say it's maybe 2 or 3 refreshes per second, if at all. That's why I gave it up to Mark. It's a capable oscilloscope with decent bandwidth and refresh rate, so okay in a workshop where you have space for a dedicated DMM. Maybe even more versatile than a stationary oscilloscope, as you don't have to worry about ground loops and isolation. The later models like the HDS242 don't have that issue and work reasonably well as a DMM as well, so that's what I have in my toolbag now. New model also has USB-C for charging, instead of some proprietary wall wart.

@@RotarySMP Better for your use case of diagnosing for example the EMI problems would be if it had two channels. Ch1 on the e-stop line, Ch2 on the motor contactor, and then trigger off Ch2 while capturing Ch1. What makes expensive oscilloscopes expensive is often the ability to trigger off arbitrary signals, like the frame start of a digital protocol, or even mathematical functions. However, what you usually need is trigger off a falling or raising edge of a rather low-frequency signal, but with a very small time-base, so you can see the high-frequency ringing in the signal.

@@RotarySMP Regarding the blank monitor: It looks all the world like the wrong refresh rate is being applied to the new monitor. The EDID (Extended Display ID) is normally read at boot time, and sometimes as a "plug and play" event. However, if there is a fixed xorg[dot]conf file, it will honour the config and force the refresh rate. P'n'P doesn't appear to be functioning properly, so try a cold boot with the new monitor attached as a first test. Failing a reboot test, try the following to reconfigure the xorg[dot]conf file: 1. Reboot into a safe environment by holding shift key. 2. Choose your current kernel (ideally there should only be one, but there may be older options available depending on previous upgrades) "with networking" is optional. 3. At the command prompt enter "telinit 3" to go to the correct run level for final config before full desktop. 4. Enter "xorg -configure" at the command prompt. 5 Reboot the machine as normal "sudo shutdown -r now" This should bring back the graphical interface by reading your hardware, and making the relevant changes to xorg[dot]config. There's a man page on the Xorg site that explains what each section of the configuration file does. Search xorg[dot]conf. I can't link it due to the whole comment being eaten by the "no hyperlinks" setting (ask me how I know and why I use [dot]?) There shouldn't be any harm in doing a sysupgrade, but it may have a few pitfalls. ie. xorg configuration may persist, as well as some other configuration files that will have suboptimal settings. Personally, I'd bite the bullet, and do a fresh install of an up to date OS, and let the installation make the best choices. This is especially important in a Real Time environment such as gcode streaming. It should go without saying that a back up of your CNC controller files should be made first. A pain in the proverbial I know, but I'd also rebuild the controller config using the backup for reference. Some timing issues may have already been addressed in later software builds, as well as other foibles. (You did comment the reason for your debounce timing didn't you? ;-) ) Good luck mate! (for the second time - youtube ate my previous comment)

The name is right there in the name. "Proximity". They cannot provide you a highly repeatable trigger point. The sensor will trigger every time you get within some proximity but that value can change depending on the surface debris and since it is inductive, the sensitivity will vary depending on how much metallic swarf is on the sensed surface. It will work with aluminum. Its inductive not magnetic. All it needs is a conductive surface in proximity. We use them in our company for sensing the presence of aluminum tubes in our test station.

Sure ; I am assuming you know some command line Linux , if not let me know. First off switch to a text terminal and issue the command 'sudo init 3' Now check if there is already an xorg.conf file in /etc/X11 , if so back up with 'sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /root/' Now run the command 'X -configure' There should now be a clean default xorg.conf file with some basics. We really only need the device (the display driver part which refers to the GPU) and the screen sections... Your NUC is probably using an Intel embedded graphics chipset, which needs little work. So let's focus on the screen for now, which should look something like this. Be sure to only specify the Mode you need, nothing else. Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Card0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultColorDepth 16 SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1280x960" EndSubSection EndSection

Could it be a different HDMI type presumption? e.g. HDMI cable with or without Ethernet. Here is a cut-and-paste: "Understanding HDMI vs Ethernet vs. HDMI with Ethernet: The Guide HDMI and Ethernet are two data transmission cables that cannot be more different. HDMI transmits audio and video signals, while ethernet cables transmit regular data. However, there is HDMI with Ethernet, a cable combining both features for multimedia purposes." I first learned of this when I noticed a new device running and it turned out to be the cable itself.

You can add some options to the config file on a raspberry pi to force it to detect a monitor connected to HDMI even if one isn't. I used to have issues with a raspberry pi media player connected to my TV - if the power went out, when it came back on, the tv wouldn't be on but the pi would power up, so it'd boot up not detecting a display at all. Adding that option helped. It at least "detected" a display even if the TV wasn't on when it booted up, but it booted at a super low resolution, so I always had to reboot it anyway to get the proper resolution back. I've since moved to a full linux box (using an "ultra small form factor" desktop) media player, and all those problems are a thing of the past now.

@RotarySMP This is how you do it: connect the display that works, change the lowest resolution and refresh rate, then test with the new display. I hope you figure it out. BTW, I like your lathe; I wish I had one to play with.

@@RotarySMP Boot Linux in recovery mode with minimal e.g. 640x480 resolution. Or change to a low resolution with your old monitor connected first, and then connect the new one. Or Ctrl+Alt+F1 to a terminal and (assuming the terminal displays on your new screen) then change your settings from there.

What is the repeatability of the switches?

Good question. I didn't measure it yet. If they are crap, I'll go back to mechanical homing on block.

Our half a million rand pick and place machine homes itself by banging into it's hard stops actually. Granted it uses servos not steppers. But still.

That is interesting. If I find those inductive sensors are not repeatable enough in practice, I can go back to hard stops.

@@RotarySMP I don't think it's better. :P I just thought it's interesting. They also have shock absorbers at the end to stop them slamming into the ends too hard. And they go very slowly while initiating.
