The name "Rottweiler" comes from the original breed which was founded in a town in Germany called "Rottweil" so therefore that has to be where the original bloodline springs from.

Rottweil Metzgerhund, essentially butchers dog, was the original name. They were used for herding, and pulling butchers carts full of meat to market. While there is mastiff in them, it's more complex a mix than the Roman war dogs were. Just as with Dobermans generations later, they were bred for a fairly specific task.

The media doesn't give them a bad name. They reserve that for bullies. The dog that's responsible for over 60 percent of attacks on humans despite there being over 200 breeds of dog. German Shepherds will always be my favorite but I'm loving my Rottweiler mix to bits and pieces

It's not the media. It's the pig headed owners who take ZERO responsibility for the power of their dog. If you do not have control over your dog at all times, it can hurt someone. Even the sweetest, calm 90lb Rottie could hurt a toddler just by bumping in2 them 2 hard. You have 2 be responsible with them. Some people are just not...

Thank you for pointing out bigger size means less health. This is important, and many people don't know it I think and just believe a bigger dog is cooler. I do not agree that tailed Rottweiler is an extra type, i mean, the tailed and docked are born the same... just differ in what human does to them. One of the red Rottweilers in your video at 4:25 is a Dogue de Bordeaux I believe. Can be recognized by the broader, more wrinkled muzzle and, well, the typical red colour...

My old Rottweiler was a real German bloodline Rottweiler born in Michigan and transferred to Ontario Canada. She was short and heavy stocky built with a short bobtail, she lived 9 years. I probably wasn't the best kid to have around any breed of dog but my mom's rottie was like a secondary dad to me, especially through her divorce with my actual dad. He would sit in the front passenger seat and would guard the car and us when she went shopping. (This is back in the day when kids got eft in cars. Nobody bothered us with our boy looking out for us and we didn't overheat) He didn't let me swim. He'd pull me by my bathers out of the beach water, but not my sister who was a few years older than me. He also bit another dog who growled at me. I was around 5 when we got him and 10 and he had to be put down from severe arthritis in the end. Then there was the one we got when I was in highschool. Again super sweet, gentle, smart. We have a picture of him chilling with me on a couch. His head was bigger than mine. Easily a much more powerful dog than we could handle but he was a good boy. Put down due to bone cancer. Now I have a friend who owns a rottie cross mastiff and let me tell you... He's just the biggest, sweetest softie. Too much of a sweetie for his own good. He always reminds me of our boys but not as protective, more just- if there's someone's he doesn't know approaching hell bark to alert them but never attack.hed rather make friends with anyone with a heartbeat and he remembers everyone he's already friends with.

@@Str82Tay222 thank you. I know everyone says this about every breed but rotties really are what you raise them to be. If you want them to be family dogs they will be. If you want and train them to serve more exclusively towards guarding, they'll do it. Our first rottie (the one who wouldn't let me swim) guarded naturally as well. So we got the best of both worlds with him. But they're extremely prone to cancer, unfortunately.

I prefer the American. The bigger the Rottie, the shorter the lifespan, and after burying 3 of them, I wish my next was the size of a teacup poodle I don't really give a crap about stuff like show quality. My dogs guard my house, they don't walk a catwalk My current one is a mix, but it's hard to tell because his dad's genes are so dominant. If he were running loose, the calls to animal control would be for a rottweiler.

There is only one type of Rottweiler, it’s depicted in the breed standard. That is why there is a breed standard, it outlines what is expected for size, color type, confirmation, dentition, temperament it’s all in there. That is also why we show our dogs, it is a way to evaluate our breeding stock. If we can’t finish our dogs to a championship they’re not worth breeding. Deviations from the breed standard are considered faults, and range from ideal to disqualifying. Be aware that “rare dogs” have disqualifying faults, it’s sad that unscrupulous breeders take advantage of uneducated buyers. It happens in every breed - spread the word!

Good christ you "breeders" really are so very delusional, there are a grand total of ZERO countries that agree on one "breed standard" for ALL BREEDS not just the rottweiler, so there's actually NO BREED STANDARD , also if you have to brag about abusing and torturing your animals by "showing" them then you shouldn't be breeding to begin with let alone be legally allowed to own any animal, you're simply a money hungry twit who has no qualms abusing animals to get the biggest pay check you can, so sick of you "registered breeders" blatantly lying, confusing the uneducated masses of pet owners or prospective pet owners, and jacking up your prices on your pups " because the emotional side is a bit much" you're all disgusting and you need to be stopped.....

I live in BC where tail docking and other cosmetic surgical procedures on dogs is illegal. In fact only Alberta and Quebec still allow that. There is (or was) a woman in my town that had a VERY large Rottie. This was a 250 lb dog that went with her everywhere. I haven't seen either of them for some years now. This is not the only super large Rottie I have come across. Most people refer to then as "king" Rotties. There are also "king" Dobermans about as well. A friend of mine in Richmond BC who owns an imported fish warehouse for the pet trade, has one as a guard dog. VERY effective. There seem to be a number of extra large Mastiffs around here as well. My last Rottie (German), passed at age 19 yrs. I wish I could acquire another, but far too expensive for me now, although I'd like to try the Roman subtype. It REALLY winds me up when people attempt to sell (and are successful in doing so because the buyers are stupid), cross bred dogs as an actual "breed". Cockapoos, Bernedoodles, Border Chow, Beagliers et al, and other mutt types for the price of a non breeding AKC/CKC dog at around $500! I once came across a young man with a box full of Rottie/Mastiff cross puppies outside of a local thrift store trying to sell the pups for $450 each. They were beautiful puppies and I would have bought two if they were more in the $50 - $100 range. He said he needed $$$ for Christmas, and besides they WERE "purebred"...purebred Rottie and purebred Mastiff. I pointed out that it didn't work like that and that at best they were mutts and offered him $75 each to cover his food costs, but he decline all lesser offers. It was mid December at the time. I'm pretty sure he didn't get any buyers at that price.

I dissagree with respect. I have had Stealth, the American breed, smaller, faster and bred for agility in competitions. She was extremely clever and highly trainable. She weighed 75 pounds, when she passed on. At the same time we had Grippen, a German Giant, as they are actually known as. She was more a teddy bear and pensive. She clocked in at 120 pounds, when she passed on. It was her absolute tolerance for everything that made her my beautiqueen and love, she never even hurt a fly. Now we have Mikojan and Tesla, two sisters from the same litter of Roman breed, tails are not docked, thus the forth class falls out. You can distinguish them on the fact that they are mastive in built and they have a knob on their snouts. They are more aggressive and protective of their own, my wife and I. They weigh in on 109 pounds each. But also teddy bears with us. There are only 3 species of Rottweilers, long-tailed, like Mikojan and Tesla, does not class them as a different specimen. It is the size, ability, temperament and physical attributes that distinguish them.

I have a German Rottweiler with a long tail, and she’s a tall gal. Her parents were shorter and stockier, but they were weight trained from a young age, and my girl was not. She’s a big fish and loves to swim. I think her swimming had something to do with her modelesque physique. She’s pushing 9 now and has not one health issue ❤️

@kayla Johnson. You are kind of right about different type of dogs but their head type and size vary among German-Europe Rottweiler and American Rottweiler. If you have a dog that both parents are from Germany and it’s got that chunky head and body but it’s bred in the us, it’s a us Rottweiler. Just like you can have a more American style rottie bred in Germany. Everyone obsesses to much on this. The owner makes the dog not the breeder. All the breeder sells you is genetics. You have to train them to do what you want or what suits the line of dog that you have

@Wushu-viking
@Wushu-viking 2 жыл бұрын
There are some "Mastweiler" crossings of English Mastiff x Rottweiler that actually resemble Rottweilers in appearance, but they are much larger. The Rott "colors" are genetic dominant, so a mix of these will almost always get black nose and nails (and brown eyes). Even if crossed with a Dogue de Bordeux. Rottweilers mixed with any "Mastiff" can be a great dog. Usually you get a more healthy dog. Unless you find a premium breeder - and prepared to pay a premium for your purebred.

The one things about the European dogs is that they only allow them to breed if they have their conformation and working titles. Here in the US anyone can breed and that is why we have so many disqualifying faults with such a deviation from the standard.

It is interesting concept of the breed. Breed is Rottweiler and it does not matter where they are born because that does not make difference. Rottweilers are born in most of the countries in the world. Bloodline does make difference and that is where you see good bred Rottweilers and bad bred Rottweilers. There is standard of breed and does not specify origin. So point is , ROTTWEILER IS ROTTWEILER.

The original Rotts were bred in Germany and were the product of Doberman mixed with another large dog but I can't remember exactly what breed it was so I'll not say anything I'm not sure about. I learned that in the early 70's at a dog breeding farm just outside of Washington DC in Virginia.

I always docked my Rottie's tails and their dew claws as well. It's done within the first 4 days after birth. In American Rotties it was breed standard forever. It seems odd 2 me 2 see them WITH tails. MANY a kid would be sporting a bruise or 2 from those tails. Plus, I always loved watching them aggressively wag that little tail nub and their entire butt!!!
@yourparentingsucks2215
@yourparentingsucks2215 Жыл бұрын
@@giondennis6808 First of all train your kids to move out of the way of their butt. Second do all they feel that pain. And 3rd of all most places ban cropping because there is no good use for it at all. They don't pull things and aren't in danger of losing limbs like back in the day. It's completely normal for all dogs to keep their limbs but all you care about is how funny it is to see them not tail wagging. If you don't care about your dogs then just say that.
@giondennis6808
@giondennis6808 Жыл бұрын
@@yourparentingsucks2215 you try 2 be condescending but even fail at that because of your lack of intelligence. Docked tails, and dew claws were an AKC breed standard...My comment about bruised kid legs is because we always have treated our dogs well and their happiness is evident upon the wagging of a tail. I have owned and bred SEVERAL breeds of dogs in my life. I bred rotties & min pins who both had tails docked, as well as dew claws removed. It was breed standard and I paid fantastic veterinarians 2 perform the surgeries and 2 ensure healing went well and with little pain. I still prefer both breeds that way. I also prefer Doberman pinchers with docked ears and tails.

Disagree with those who choose either German or American. The superior rottie comes from Eastern Europe, Serbia, Croatia, etc. the breed standard is a beefier thicker dog with a squared muzzle and not necessarily heavier but usually a bit taller and huskier. Our Serbian female rotties were also slightly longer legged.

You are talking about PUGWEILLERS with those short muzzles that cause breathing problems, eating problems, teeth problems, weaken the bite, and generally make the breed look like shit. Those are a horrible example of the breed and nobody with an AKC certified dog would breed with one.

I have a docked 4 yr old Rottie, with AKC papers indicating German breeding. He has longer legs than most German bred males I have seen, he has a very nicely shaped large head, and weighs 135LBs, I have tried to get him to be more athletic, he participates briefly but quickly loses interest. The one exercise he does seem to enjoy is tugging. He also absolutely refuses to get into any vehicle, which at his size makes trips to the vet and wash problematic. When he was a smaller dog, we could lift him, but now we would have to use a crane. He is a great, gentle family pet, and is very tolerant with our visitors, however he is very aggressive with strangers outside of the fence. He also will not tolerate any other animal on our property boundary, he killed our 6 chickens when my wife and I went fishing. I also saw him kill a coyote 3 or 4 weeks ago. He has never displayed any aggression or vicious temperament to his human pack members, we have no idea how to change or influence his current mental make up. We live in the mountains, have a large fenced property and have few neighbors. People come up to enjoy our cabin and the nearby outdoor activities. He is always very good with everyone who visits us. I guess this is what you get with Rottweiler ownership. All in all, my wire and I are very happy with our big boy, and he is very happy with us.

Instead of rich mahogany./ blk penciled toes.....Oh yes, there is a big difference..But all have beautiful loving temperament if breed and raised correctly..Akc has ruined alot of our Imported dogs, Tail is natural, docking was for two purposes..1) Pulling wagons,so the tail wouldn't get caught in wheels, 2) Taxes any dog and mean any dog that had tails were docked to show it was working dog and therefore taxed as property..Height.. 2 heights. Herding cattle would kick the dogs in the heads, so fatal. ( these were taller, legged rots, farmers / breeders bred more shorter ,stocky dogs so if cattle kicked it would be in the chest... .🤨❤⚘
