In this episode I take a look at Rough Ryder's latest Camp/Scout knife, the RR2215 Classic Carbon II Scout knife. This four implement scout knife features T10 Carbon Steel Blades, Micarta Handles. brass liners, and a pewter shield. Yes, it is my impression but I'll give you the good, the bad and the ugly.

Just took delivery of one of these, and it is very well made, tight tension when opening, no wobble, no bend in my can opener, just the jog designed into the part. It came wrapped in paper like a FROST Knife too. Definitely better quality that the Schrade Old Timer 230T I ordered at the same time; which is still a decent tool in and of itself. Would be nice however if the bail were biased to stay under the knife instead of in the path of the main blade, even the silly box has the only place for the bail up and covering the end of the big blade. While not too sharp when this knife/tool combo showed up, a couple of minutes on a strop rendered a superbly sharp main blade. Thanks for turning me onto Rough Rider's in general, your video rant about the BIG R on the bolster just popped up in my feed and made me curious. I'm more about hunting or crafting fixed blades, but used to collect a few pocket knives many years ago; most never got carried though and I gave away quite a few of them over the ensuing years. Now you've rekindled that love/hate affair with smaller folders; they are just so dang pretty really, and now I have more than a few on the way.

Great review, Tobias. I have several of the RR camp knives, including this one. Each has its own good and bad points. For instance, I prefer the long awl on the older models. I also prefer the less chunky ones. BUT I love the carbon steel and micarta on this new one. Like other things in life, there's a tradeoff.

This thing really pushed all my nostalgia buttons from when I was a kid. Picked one up and have been pretty darn happy with it. Only issue is a bit of blade rub between the main blade and the awl, but not enough I can’t live with it. I previously had a Uncle Henry scout and it was terrible compared to this, cost more and literally started falling apart after a few weeks. I think RR may be the last brand making a decent scout knife anymore.

So far, I have the Canoe Classic Carbon II. By comparison, I have the Red Fox Canoe as well. As you noted, the CCII is heftier than other models. I noted the same. The CCII Canoe is wider and heavier than the Red Fox. The blades themselves are also thicker on the CCII. I don't necessarily mind this. I like a bit of heft to a knife. The scales have a very nice grip to them as well. The fit and finish is better with the Red Fox. The CCII has a notable gap, on the back, between the springs. I recently picked up a second CCII Canoe (in a shipping mix up). It also has the same gap. Thanks for the informative video, as always.

Pity about the gapping. I think sometimes they over think things when they start coming out with new knives - essentially fixing stuff that wasn't broken and breaking the knife in the process. I'm thinking the thicker blades might have something to do with the different steel being used. I had mentioned to the folks at SMKW that it seems like the folks making their Carbon bladed knives (and other steels) are learning all over how to make knives. They are still playing catch up when it comes to the quality compared to the knives made in 440A. The other issues is their current fascination with half stops, swedges, and some other tooling they have started doing. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it leads to unanticipated quality issues.
@Pocket_EDC
@Pocket_EDC 2 ай бұрын
@KnifeChatswithTobias you could very well be right. I think them sometimes lean into the collectibilty of the knife, over the form and function. I admit, I like the look of the swedge, but sometimes on the closed blade, the swedge can create a sharp edge that digs into the hand.

Chicago knife works has an amber bone camp knife (RR533). Other than the covers, is that the same as the red one you show here? I definitely prefer the thinner profile and brass spacer. I hope they eventually do a scout knife in smooth bone and nickel silver. It would also be nice to see them integrate a flathead driver into other patterns. Something with the elegant lines of a sowbelly or copperhead and the versatility of a little driver/light pry tool would be nice for edc.

After seeing this knife; it is a heavy duty version of the older ones. If you wanted a no frills model that will take abuse better under hard use this one is made for that. It’s not pretty and shiny as the older ones. It will look great hanging from a carpenter’s belt and fits the need for a rough use knife to a T. There is less chance of the covers cracking from being dropped and if it does get scratched; up it’s made for that as well. It would be nice if they made different color ones next. They would sell more if they did; basic red, green, blue, yellow, orange and even white ones would sell like hot cakes. The small difference in color to a tradesman makes them know the knife is theirs. If they would exchange the can opener for a hook blade and change the bottle opener to a wood chisel or small sturdy coping blade would make a real work knife no else makes.

Agreed. Much of the crinking also seems to be counter-productive as it seems the blade is first bent one way only to be re-bent back to where was in the first place. It is like one end of the knife is not paying attention to what is located on the other end.

It's not awful. The steel is 7Cr so a little softer than 440A but again not horrible. It has a short screwdriver. What I don't like is the way the sawcut Delrin looks. I really should do a review of it especially since it is still readily available.
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 3 жыл бұрын
A quick follow up. I just looked at the 23OT. I still give the nod to the 533 but that is just me. But I like the 23OT quite a bit more than the Classic Carbon II. It just looks cleaner. The 23OT has a satin finish to the blades but it feels very solid. The blades are a little lazy opening but there is no side to side movement. And as I said, 7Cr vs 440A Vs T10. How imporant is carbon steel and/or slightly better stainless steel. Most important different is probably difference in the can opener and how important a modern can opener is to you. Plus the other major differences: long screwdriver and bone vs short screwdriver and composition/delrin....

The bottle opener wouldn't open a single bottle from my fridge, now way, no how. So the one thing I wanted this knife for is a total fail. I could probably re-grind it to make it work, but the nail nick is buried so deeply it's a pain to open in the first place. And you can drive a Mack truck between the gaps on the tools. Otherwise the one I got was surprisingly good. Still a $12 write-off though.
@KnifeChatswithTobias

They really need to rethink and rejigger these knives. Maybe the reason people don't buy their camp knives is because they are doing a lousy job at making sure the cap lifter works and getting a decent edge on the can openers. That style of can opener is over 60 years old. The caplifter/screwdriver is over a 100 years old. They really should be able to get it right.

Looking at knife steel composition charts, T10 is MUCH more than just a Chinese 1095. More of a "tool steel". 1095 steel is just carbon and manganese added. T10 also has Tungsten (that's the "T") Chromium, Vanadium, Phosphorus, Silicon and Sulfur added to the mix. It also looks to have a much higher Rockwell hardness potential of: 64-67. Versus: 56-60 for 1095. It could be more brittle than 1095, but have better edge retention potential.
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 2 жыл бұрын
What most sources says is T10 is similar in performance to 1095 and has a similar carbon content. But you are correct, it is not just the name the Chinese give to 1095. I've read in a few places that while T10 can be hardened to a higher Rockwell it will cause it to be brittle so a lower hardening is preferred. I think it is safer to say that T10 is closer to a 1095CV than just plain vanilla 1095. Thanks for the comment. It does help to clarify the topic.

However, as an "outsider" I immediately could see the problem with the very sad state of things on here and that cap lifter debacle; Corona beer. Might I suggest a switch to Modelo Especial if you like a lighter Germanesque styled brew or the Negro Modelo for times when only 'darkness' will suffice. Yeah, and cook out more often, Modelo goes well with wood smoke wafting through the air; mesquite or red oak seem to make the best rib-eye results; your mileage may vary. All kidding aside, glad you made this report update as it really had me worried since Rough Rider and Marbels seem to use the same cap lifters, and I have both models on order and due to arrive within hours.
