David Michael Canterbury (born September 19, 1963) is a survival expert who co-starred on the reality television show Dual Survival for two seasons (2010-11) which aired on the Discovery Channel.[1] He is also an author, publishing Bushcraft 101 in 2014 (which made The New York Times Best Seller list),[2] Survivability for the Common Man (2011), and Advanced Bushcraft (2015). I’ve used this to whittle projects and to make a leather sheath.Dave had this knife made with his changes to get it into the hands of the people who couldn’t afford higher priced knives is my understanding.he collaborated for the extra size and length of the blades plus the awl.for the price this knife can do a lot if the user has the skills to put it to the tasks.

I don't know anything about Dave Canterbury, either, but as someone with a modicum of experience camping out of both a backpack and a car, I feel like the design of the classic Kamp King (and hence the embiggened Scout King) is a throwback to times when most people were car camping, bringing with them bottles of beer and soda as well as many canned food items. To a modern "survivalist" or even backpacker, the tools on the Victorinox Hunter would be much more useful. I can't imagine a self proclaimed survival expert endorsing a classic camp-style knife in this day and age, no matter how large. It is interesting from a collector's standpoint, I suppose, but I can't imagine trudging off into the woods with a pocket knife that is so limited in its versatility when there are far better options.

I don't think this was made to use, it's for collectors who are always looking for something they don't already have.

2 years now since this video was made, the MR468 has changed a little bit. Mine came in a dark reddish brown, the shield is centered nicely, and the Bail dousn't look as robust being fairly thin round wire, flattened at the ends where it is attached to the pin. Great Video!! : )

Of all the modern versions of the camp king I like the Canterbury design the most! The color of the scales happen to be one of my favorites!

Really surprised that Dave Canterbury has anything to do with this knife! He is all about the fixed blade and does a lot with Morakniv. Had the opportunity to meet and talk with him a bit at Blade Show West 2019 at the Mora table! Thanks for showing us this one Tobias!!

A simple endorsement means absolutely nothing without a good review. I know Dave has had some issues in the past but putting his name on a product is just that...money. I agree about the Vic Hunter, that's the one I carried through 15 years of guiding. I had specialty knives that I used also but the Hunter was with me always. Thanks for a good look Tobias.

just visiting this video to see again your gorgeous cattleknife with screw driver (a tool that looks more useful for a carpenter than a cowboy). I never been on a survival situation, but it happened to me being forced to do a lot of work with pocket tools to avoid an uncomfortable situation. I think that a friendly grip for the hand is much better than oversize tools which seem designed just to be abused. But you put a huge question on camp knives designers. Which tools we need today? I bought this knife because im a big Dave Canterbury fan.. mine seems to be a little lighter in color than yours. my shield is pretty centered maybe a tad off. Dave is a pretty well known outdoorsman bushcrafter. i may use this not sure yet. got it mainly for my collection. only thing weird to me on mine is the awl. It is not fully sharpened. the first maybe half is dull then has a sharp edge then a tiny dull spot again.

David C. Is perhaps best known as one of the guys on Dual Survival, a TV series putting 2 people in survival situations all over the world. He runs a Bushcraft survival school. Looks like he pimped out his name without checking the production run. Might be an okay knife with a few modifications. Strange that they can't get the shield centered properly.

"A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man." Jebediah Springfield. Canterbury is a true outdoorsman and runs the Pathfinder School. He is a a practical person who doesn't necessarily insist on carrying the largest, most technically advanced knife, but in making the most of what you have. He often uses traditional folders and I like that he didn't feel like putting his name on an affordable Chinese knife was beneath him. He was also involved with the Mora Garberg, which I believe was their first true full tang offering. That being said, that big can opener is just silly.

I like the scout knife pattern in general, but don't own any as of yet. As far as multi bladed knives for work and camping, I'm afraid I've got a bit of a swiss army knife addiction. They just work well for me. But out of the models that you showed, I think the rough ryder kamp king is my favorite. I just really like the looks of the covers on that one. Thanks for showing all these, and for your thoughts on the scout king, buddy.

You know Tobias, sometimes you can be sort of abrasive. This is one of those times. Dave Canterbury is an outdoorsman/bushcrafter/survivalist/ trapper/......KZfaqr with 673k followers. I enjoy some of his videos but would not consider myself a prepper or a groupie. I do however like almost everything about that scout knife. I'll start with the burnt bone jigged handles that you slammed. Personally, that colort and pattern is possibly my favorite type of knife handle material and I would be quite content if every knife on earth were dressed that way. The point is that Sometimes some of the things that you say can insult people as we all have different tastes and in this day and age certain factions of folks implement the cancel culture policy on ya. I also want you to know that you are my favorite knife video person and I respect your opinion even when I disagree with it and this is one of those times. I'm glad that I watch this video however because you have given me the love of camp knives with your vids an I just have to have one of these Dave Canterbury knives except for the intrusive blade etch. I like everything about it Thank you for turning us on to it. On the topic of the " enbiggend " can opener. how do you feel about your demo knives? Are they not similarly proportioned? I like your videos and I respect your opinion but this time I totally disagree. RESPECT

I bought the Dave C. scout knife from SMKW not a bad knife but I kind of like the Old Timer scout knife a little better. One thing you might want to address when reviewing these scout knives is the can opener. The one on my Dave C scout was dull as hell and I had to really sharpen it. Now that having been said, I'm going to be using my trusty P-38 to open cans butshould the need arise you're gonna want that can opener really sharp

If you're interested in outdoors stuff Dave Canterbury is great to follow here on KZfaq and I definitely recommend his books as well. The tv show he was on can be ignored. Just sensational reality tv.

Probably built for tradition rather than function. I’ve wondered about cap lifers and can openers for a long time.

I would say that yes the off center shield would bother me .

I just received this knife from SMKW. The large size doesn't bother me. The blade came sharp. The cap lifter/screw driver is functional, though I'll only use the screw driver. I don't do beer, though an occasional, rare bottle of root beer, this will function fine. The can opener IS large. I learned how to use a pocket knife can opener as a kid, so this one will serve well, though...did I mention it was large? The crook in the shape is part of the function. Compare it to an older, stand alone manual can opener, they are often shaped with a crook in them for the tip to lock in place. THE PROBLEM: I always carry a "smaller" pocket knife in my pocket, in addition to a Leatherman Surge on my belt. I usually carry a SAK Tinker or Huntsman, and use the awl frequently to slightly lift a soda can lid to start it up to open for my not-so-tactile fingertips. I then use the awl to poke a hole in the top of the can before I open it, which allows for the bad habit of chugging my soda. If you drink beer, I've see this done to help reduce the suds created when pouring. In the official description, the tool is described as a "reamer with sewing eye" (I thought was an awl?). This designe is a FAIL, if used as an awl. The reamer is long and thin, which allows for the tip to BEND if putting any prying motion on it. Poking straight down, it works, but do not pry with it. I can put enough pressure on it to bend the tip by hand. For $20, I will not return it, since the the other blades are functional enough. The reamer is NOT an awl, and is very weak to basically being a complete flaw in the design.

I feel like the shield being off-center is on purpose. Makes me think that maybe the bone had some fault in it, and they just covered it with the shield. My Kamp King had very lazy action similar to this knife. And the main blade fell directly on top of the awl. Very annoying

Dave Canterbury is a Bushcraft/survivalist who makes KZfaq videos. He was also on shows like the Survivor and Alone I think. In one of his videos, he actually does use a SAK to say that a good camp knife should come with a blade, awl, and saw. I am really surprised that this knife does not have a saw. But if I remember correctly, he might have said that he would have a real saw so he was not concerned that pocket knife have a saw. But I agree with you, a saw would have been a better tool for this knife than having a bottle cap lifter. Also, I agree with you on the color. It looks like diarrhea brown or puke brown.

A modern camp knife in my opinion doesn't need more than a combo cap lifter/can opener, leaving space for some other useful tool. The can opener on that knife looks as though it would take a lot of swing from one end of a cut to the next, the point looks too long.

Okay, I’ve had the Scout King for a little while now. The shield is centered well and the action on the can opener (as well as all the other blades) is what I would call “just right”. It will stop at the half open, and snap open with just a little movement that direction. I love the size of it overall. But you are absolutely correct in that the can opener sticks up far too high when closed. I’m wondering if I can grind it down a bit so it sits lower when closed. (Maybe I’ll try it sometime). Overall, it looks good and does what it’s supposed to do. It fits my large hands better than the other scout knives I own.

Case Cutlery also has two Dave Canterbury signature knives; A trapper and a 2 blade folding hunter. Both are blackwashed CV, and come with signature sheaths w/attached ferro rod.

Marbles branded knives are made by Rough Rider, they simply just slap another brand on them, before they leave the factory.. The grooved pattern nail nicks are the big giveaway.

Ive got the Marbles camp knife with the blue scales. Absolutely beautiful! But then i look at my SA boy scout huntsman and thats the supreme scout knife of all time to me. But then i collect a lot of knives like my douk douk moras opinels etc not because they are the best but because they are interesting on one level or another.

Well the reamer has a nice sewinghole in it, main blade is a little bigger and I do like the looks on this one. But if I had the choice between the Remmington or the Marbles it would be the Remmington. Maybe if they would've placed a sawblade instead of the oversized canopener and made a canopener/caplifter combo as you suggested I would lean to the Marbles Scoutknife. If it wasn't a choice question I think I would pick it up anyway because although oversized items, it is a nice knife overall. I've missed the productionassistent, give her my regards and thank you very much.

I purchased the Rough Rider Kamp King and it fell apart in my hands when I tried to open a can with it. I'm assuming it would be the same case with this. They're fun to look at, but they are in no way usable in reality.

I am in the market for one since my old Cub Scout knife just fell apart after many years, but this one looks a bit large for me. I recently ordered a Marbles Stockman and was shocked at the fit and finish on such a cheap knife. There might be something wrong with it, but I haven't figured out what it could be yet. I would definitely consider another Marbles knife.

That can opener sticking up like that has too make the grip uncomfortable. I agree just making things bigger doesn't mean that they are better. I definitely agree that a wood saw would be much better. I doubt I will be getting one as it just doesn't look like a knife that would see much if any use.

It sounds like the Scout King has the same quality control problems that the Dave Canterbury Case Hunter has. Which leads me to think Dave needs to take a bit more care about what he’s putting his name on. Glad I didn’t order one now.

Okay, I decided, I just couldn't live without it, I just bought it. I had been looking at the Remington R4 which is about 4 inches long, and this to me is just way more interesting, so I had to have it!!

very useful comparison. seems like they should be making a Tobia Gibson Scout Emperor, one scout knife to rule them all. saw blade and combo tool instead. sounds reasonable enough. or just get the victorinox 111mm hunter.... though that would be spendy. which makes me wonder how inexpensive Marbles would be able to make the knife you're suggesting.

If you check out Dave's youtube channel you will see that he prefers Victorinox knives for pocked multi-function knives.

Very intriguing, I think I'll stick with my antique camp kings and my Victorinox Farmer. Short awl/punch isn't too useful and the can opener protruding isn't desirable. Sometimes Dave hits the mark.

Dave Canterbury seems to put his name on everything these days. Frankly, I do not see the advantage of this knife over other “scout knife” styles. Seems like something a little different simply to flash Mr. Canterbury’s name. Thank you for this review.

LOL, yes, I’m not quite 7 feet tall, but I have very big gorilla hands. The action on the can opener isn’t really a problem for me. But the shield placement is. Is that weird? I just ordered this knife, and am waiting for it to arrive. We’ll see how it looks then. I ordered it mostly because it’s bigger than other scout knives. I’ll have to see how the size of the can opener works for me. I agree a saw would be nice, but I like the can opener option. Thanks for this video.

Shield centering is not an issue for me, size of the can opener is not a big issue either. I have small original issue P-38 can openers and large versions. The larger version does better opening cans than the original small version, but I still have a small one on my key ring with my keys. You never know when you might need it. I recall SMKW's were selling Dave Canterbury Case Scout knives for a ridiculous price. All he did on the Case knife was put his name on the ain blade and ground the spine to a true 90 degree spine to facilitate making fire with a ferro rod. This automatically voided the Case warranty, because it removed the protective coating from the spine. I'd keep the cap lifter screwdriver blade, because you might find that most Holy of all Grails........... A bottle of BEER somebody got drunk and forgot about last time they went Camping !!! 🤣🤣🤣 leave it to a Vet to have that reason 🙃

Can openers and corkscrews are near worthless in this day and age. I'll take the Remington any day, any size. I like the Rough Ryder with the Phillips screwdriver too.

Dave Canterbury is a survivalist, bushcrafter, KZfaqr. He has a channel demonstrating bush craft skills and tools. Likely he was paid for his signature and may not have had much to do with the design of the knife. There is difference between a signature Tony Bose knife that made knives for a lifetime and ones endorsed by celebrities. If you like the celebrity you might like the knife for that reason. I would rather have a Tobias Gibson signature model; very likely you would get a better working design for your money. I noticed once a KZfaq channel grows Hugh; they have little time for the subscribers that helped get them there. Once a KZfaq channel takes endorsements their true unbiased opinion is lost. All the videos are just commercials for their sponsors. Sponsors often drop the channel for a better one and that channel soon becomes history. If all you ever see is product unboxing videos; likely there is a sponsor hiding in the woodpile. How can a KZfaq channel for fishing ever use all the products they show in unboxing videos? They don’t; that is obvious if you follow the channel long. They don’t buy thousands of dollars’ worth of products for their subscribers unless they are given them for free or at very low prices. I believe Knife Chats gives honest unbiased reviews and that is what I prefer to see and believe.

Cap lifter, or bottle opener is my absolute essential. The can opener has passed its time. If stuck a sheath knife can manage the job, but it’s so rare. Opening a beer bottle happens at least once every day and two or three times occasionally! I certainly wouldn’t pay anything extra to have Dave Canterbury’s name on anything!

It is interesting that the name of Dave Canterbury, who emphasizes the quality of tools and knives in particular, is connected to a medium-level folding knife made in China, which probably has little use value for a woodsman. In the video, i can see a lot of finishing errors, which indicate poor qualityl. In Finland this costs €35, so maybe I'll buy it to see this "miracle" myself. Although I normally don't buy these Chinese waist of money wonder's.
