This video is about national cycle network route 5 between Stafford and Stoke on Trent. We use the Isabel trail to go through Stafford, which runs along the old Stafford to Uttoxeter railway. we then use some lanes through the Staffordshire countryside to get to the Trent and Mersey canal. We then follow the canal through Stone to the potteries, Stoke on Trent, finishing at festival park on route 555.

Also done this route by narrow boat. A lot slower but pleasant way to travel.

I quite fancy a trip on a narrow boat one day, it seems a slower pace but pleasant way to travel! Thanks for watching!

Cycle down the A34 from Stafford to stoke every day for over 20 yrs and never had a problem, it's a nice long straight road and cars can see you from miles away, plus no slip roads to worry about, but it's definitely a more pleasant ride going through the countryside though, great video 👍

Thanks for the comment, I agree confident cyclists will be fine on the A34, but defiantly more pleasant taking the scenic route. Keep cycling!

I cycle on the dual carriageway on that section all the way to Trentham sometimes, it's not too scary to be honest never had any issues with vehicles getting close. With it being a dual carriageway cars have plenty of room to pass.

I think if you’re a confident road rider it’s not an issue, and most cars will give you plenty of room. Personally I prefer a quieter route, even if it takes a bit longer. Thanks for watching!

Hi mate, I know this video is a couple of years old now but I’ve only just come across it. Looking for routes to ride around Staffordshire/Stoke On Trent. Only a mountain bike so I do more canal routes and off road. This was beautiful and I’ll definitely give this one a go. Very informative and some great tips. Thanks for doing this. I’ll check out see if you have any other videos too. Cheers matey 😊

Great video - really informative, and I especially liked your use of historical facts! I live in Stoke just off the canal/route 555 and my family are from Stafford, so I know this route really well - in fact, the little house I grew up in is just behind the bridge at 1:15 :) The A34 is horrendous to cycle on - I used to live in Manchester and would ride on dual carriageways there all the time as I am a confident cyclist, but the drivers treat the A34 between Stafford and Stone as a race track and I have experienced some of the worst close passes of my life on that stretch. The only place I've cycled where the roads feel similarly dangerous is Portugal! So you were definitely right to advise people to stick to the shared path.

@@cyclingn8 I'm a history buff too, but I think it's good for all viewers to have some basic facts about an area in a video like this - it gives it an extra layer of interest 🙂

I have to ride on some duel carriageway as I am on a tricycle and a lit cycle routes can be very narrow, on the A64 from Scarborough to Molton the oath is only 2 foot wide,

Great content, I used to cycle but now more of a walker, will try and walk some sections of the NCR soon, used to like cycling them. I agree with the cycle lane, I hated any road cycling so would always use shared footpaths and cycle lanes.
