In this video, we connect and test out the HD Retrovision component video cables for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Famicom.
Purchase HD Retrovision Cables from Castlemania Games at goo.gl/UR9F8U
Anytime I post videos on clone consoles there's always the wave of people who poo-poo clones for various reasons. I've always liked clones for how simple they are to connect to modern HD TVs via HDMI and, for the price, they offer a decent gaming experience. Now HD Retrovision has developed some awesome Component Video Cables for the SNES & Super Famicom that make it possible to get real RGB video out of the original hardware without modification. Ok, I'm intrigued, sign me up!
The cables are pretty straightforward honestly. They're Component RCA jacks with gold plating and on the other side, they have a standard Nintendo AV connector. Now this connector has been used on the SNES 101 (SNES Jr), Super Famicom Jr, N64 and Gamecube but it is important to note that these cables are not compatible with these systems UNLESS they have been RGB modded.
Before connecting to my TV I performed the test HD Retrovision recommends on their site for compatibility. Unfortunately, my capture card and Element TV failed the test, however, my Samsung 4K Ultra HD TV passed with flying colors. With this knowledge I knew there was one solution I needed, I needed an OSSC to upscale for capturing. Well poop.
Once I had the connectors plugged into my SNES and the OSSC I was able to capture footage perfectly and man, what an amazing experience. The colors are super vibrant, the audio is spot on and overall this was a mindblowing experience! I never believed original hardware could produce images this sharp but I was blown away at how good everything looked. From SNES, Super Famicom and even Super Game Boy this was an amazing experience. Best of all using original hardware means no compatibility issues!
Why it RoX:
- $60 price makes a low barrier to entry
- Amazing audio and video output
- Zero Lag or Latency
- Heavy-duty cables
- Gold plated RCA jacks
- In-line brightness switch
- Makes original hardware worth dusting off
- Works with SNES and Super Famicom
What could be improved:
- No upscaling limits some TV's compatibility
- While $60 is a great price you can get an HDMI SNES Clone for less
- Some newer TVs do not support component video any longer
Should You Buy a Set?
If your TV passes the 240P compatibility test and you have an original Super Nintendo or Super Famicom these are must-own in my opinion. I was blown away at the colors, the audio, the overall experience. I figured these would look good, but not HDMI good or SNES Classic good, if that make sense. These cables make my original games look better than ever and, unlike clones or the Classics, introduce 0-lag or latency. Back that up with great online support and you have, again, a must-own for any serious retro gaming collector.

I just ordered one of these to try with my Component to HDMI converter box to easier interface with my capture setup. I was recently at a convention (Otakon in Wash DC) and I picked up an SFC with Super Bomberman, and it looks great via composite (my BMD Intensity Pro 4k sees it just fine), but I could only imagine what it'd look like with component. I did get an AV2HDMI upscale box to try, and while it works and successfully converts the SFC's composite signals to HDMI, there's this consistent green bar/green pattern on screen in the middle and that really annoys me. I really hope these HD RetroVision cables attached to my HDMI converter box works well for me. I'll report back. Great video! Just subbed.

Only notes for me are that the HD Retrovision cables take rgb signal but output component (YPbPr) to your TV, not RGB. With that, you're not getting the red, green and blue as mentioned. Also... most TVs today are gonna give you less than equal latency performance when connected directly and getting upscaled internally rather than with the OSSC as you have on your demo TV. You definitely have the ideal setup though and good stuff overall.

I’m somewhat just getting into the HD retro gaming scene (till now just have been playing original hardware on a CRT) and am somewhat overwhelmed lol. All I wanna do is play my NES and SNES (and maybe n64) games in HD with 0 lag/latency (some NES games would be unplayable) on a smallish 18 inch gaming monitor. Can you help an old guy out? Also don’t wanna spend a fortune. Currently don’t have the monitor (not sure which to get yet), only original hardware and a CRT. If I was gonna enter the HD retro gaming scene from scratch, what should I do, if I want no latency?
@brandontalbort
@brandontalbort 3 жыл бұрын
@@pcm2fchris Pretty hard to give a cheap solution to check all of those boxes, unfortunately. You've probably already heard this, but sticking to a nice standard definition CRT is probably the best way to keep cost down and not deal with motion blur, latency and poor handling of 240p. From there a set of composite cables for NES and composite/s-video for the snes. The HD retrovision cable for snes is good whether on a CRT that has component or for going to an LCD, however this is where price starts coming into play. For the NES, you're stuck with composite as its best unless you have it modded. One of the Retrotink scalers is probably the next move if you still want to move to LCD and for moderate prices. As for the LCD, itself, you're gonna have to do the research to find a make and model that keeps latency minimal and likely need that external scaler such as the Retrotink2X or OSSC (but then $$). There are plenty of well researched websites and videos on this stuff. Try out the "RetroRGB" and "MyLifeInGaming" channels on youtube for a start or RetroRGB's website. They are two of the best of them out there who place alot of focus on these challenges. Not even two years ago, I was of the same mentality where I just wanted something quick and easy... I still mainly use CRTs for anything PS2 generation and older, for now. I do have the space and like the look and feel of it. Just picked up an OLED for xmas though so I have started courting the OSSC and Tink products. Blaaaah it truly is hard to not fall in.
@pcm2fchris

@@brandontalbort Awesome response here man, thanks for interacting with me. This whole area is something a guy can really fall into - like you said - and quickly be way over his head if he's not very techy. Worst part about it too is that you can't even try out these custom setups to see if you enjoy the gaming experience before you've spent the money. You've just got to buy and see what you think. With that in mind I'm considering just sticking to my CRT and taking the money I'd otherwise spend and upgrading my game collection. Spend $400 on new hardware OR $400 in games? Then again, we *did* just get a new stimulus check, didn't we? :P I'm considering going full boar and upgrading all hardware to something like the following: RetroUSB AVS, gaming monitor (20inch Spectra on amazon for $80 - if you know a reason why this would be a bad idea, please share), and then for SNES some sort of converter I'd use with original hardware to connect to the Spectra (I've heard there's one with no latency for around $60). What I want to avoid first and foremost is latency - because I actually like to play (and beat!) my NES and SNES games, and some of those, esp on NES, are unbeatable (essentially) on emulators (I have a RetroPie) and, from what I've heard, various NES and SNES clones. The N64 and GameCube would just have to stay on the CRT, or be future projects. What do you think? Think the setup would give me what I want?
@RoXolid
@RoXolid 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I'm late to the party here. I for one am not a fan of CRTs, as such I HDMI Modded my NES, and everything else either has Component output stock or was modded to component. The NES, unless you get it modded, about the best you'll get without needing a mod is Component video, which the RetroTink Mini will make look about as good as posisble for the money. For the SNES & N64, the Mini can also do S-Video, and MIke at RetroTink has a compatible S-Video Cable you can bundle with the Mini. I'm actually outlining a series of videos to discuss how to play a certain console's games in the best quality, that's a few weeks away yet. I'll be starting with the NES, going through the Nintendo consoles thru the Wii, then move to Sega.
@RoXolid
@RoXolid 3 жыл бұрын
A few other options, but these are pricier and work only on one console is the Super 64 HDMI Adapter from Eon Gaming which will give you HDMI out tapping into (I believe) the S-Video output). For Gamecube, if you have a Digital Output port, you can use the Insurrection Industries Carby ($80), the Eon Gaming GCHD MkII ($149) and Retro-Bit JUST announced a new adapter called the Prism which I'll have more on in the next day or so. I think the Prism is going to be $79.99 as well.

For your situation, then just going with these cables is the way to go, you're not going to find a better solution out there.

No matter what "magic" people keep trying it will always be second place to the correct way to get video from these systems. Genesis, Turbo 16, snes and so on. Get a pvm, if you are short on room they make 14-15' nice rgb monitor like Sony pvms. If you don't have room where you live for a 14" pvm, you shouldn't be buying anything for video games and should start saving up loose change to get out the cardboard box you live in. Rgb monitor, scart or scart to bnc and whatever Amps or mods you want to enhance the quality of the native rgb. Rgb is vastly superior to component. Never play retro on HD tvs like a scrub with a lag fetish, always use a crt, try to get 500 or 700 TV lines minimum in the monitor and make sure that you use a quality rgb cable. Anything else besides this proper setup will be inferior.
@RoXolid
@RoXolid 5 жыл бұрын

@@RoXolid There's a few, but one in particular, very good articles about peripheral vision and pixel "bleeding" individuals in esports use a sort of formula for monitoring size. Too big a screen at optimum distance affects your peripheral vision. If you move away from the screen to compensate for that loss of vision then you have distortion of pixies to the point of blurring.
