Should you buy an OSSC Open Source Scan Converter for Retro Video Game Consoles

In this video we set up and test out the OSSC, the Open Source Can Converter, designed up up-scale old video game systems for HD displays.
Have you ever had a shiny new toy that once you put it all together and you learn a critical piece was missing? Like something missing so significant that you couldn't use your new toy. Well that happened to me recently with the HD Retrovision Cables for my SNES, Super Famicom and Sega Genesis. The cables worked great on my 4K UHD Samsung TV but my video capture card and Element TV in my game room, well those were a different story. I had been debating about buying an up-converter for some time, like an XRGB Framemeister, but the nearly-$400 price tag made it way out of my budget. A company in the UK has recently released a less-expensive competitor to the Framemeister with a ton of capabilities called the OSSC. Well, I finally broke down and bought one and while expensive I'm glad I did.
The OSSC has inputs for Component RGB Cables, SCART, VGA and now with version 1.6 analog audio in. 1.6 also introduces an HDMI output which replaces the previous DVI output. While image quality is basically identical between the two HDMI is a lot more convenient to use in the long run. To connect the HD Retrovision cables I was able to use the regular RGB inputs for the video but for audio I needed to adapt the RCA Jacks to a 3.5mm headphone-style jack. I hit up my local Best Buy for a set of RCA-to-3.5mm cables and a set of Female-Female couplers to make everything work, and it did perfectly. One thing of note is that you need to use firmware with an "a" in the file to make sure audio passthrough works.
Oh my goodness, this thing is awesome! You'll want to make sure you check out my individual videos on the Genesis and SNES HD Retrovision cables by using line doubling and line tripling the video quality was better than I ever expected out of a stock system!
Why it RoX
- Amazing video quality
- Lag Free
- 1.6 version now has analog audio in and HDMI out
- Scanline options for those who want them
- VGA, Component and SCART inputs
- Firmware upgradeable
- Small Size
- You can buy it assembled or as a kit
- Much more affordable than the Framemeister
What Could Be Improved?
- Still expensive
- Power Supplies have been out of stock for sometime
- The remote should just come with the overlay
- Unlike the Framemeister it is not compatible with Composite inputs
Should you buy one?
If you're investing in original hardware and not doing an HDMI mod this is the best quality you're going to get for the money. But I cannot say this is a must own for the casual enthusiast. Yes, it's amazing, yes, it looks great but you can get a really good clone system and a ton of games for the same price of JUST the OSCC. I don't like that required items, namely the AC Adapter and Remote Control, are sold separately. However if you want to play on real hardware this is the way to go!

@euroretrogamer204

You should be able to do that. You can use the OSSC de-intelacer through the menu Output Opt. > 480i/576i -> Line2x (Bob) that will output a 480p signal.

I was thinking about dropping my CRT tv due to calibration issues and space. Currently I have my NES/SNES/PS1 hooked up via SCART to a HAMA SCART Switch, then I have a Scart connector with audio breakout plugged into a SCART to Component. Then the component is plugged into a switcher (so I can use native component devices like PS2) which is hooked into my TV via component. What would my setup need to be if I switch to the OSSC? Could I keep the exact setup I have and just take that last component out after my Component switcher and run that to the OSSC and then HDMI to my new TV? (I assume this audio breakout I have in place is required for audio to work..it's been awhile since I setup my stuff so I can't remember lol! I think the Ninendo and SNES required it for sound through SCART)

PAL Gamecube has 576i output at 50hz on PAL50 , and 480i output at 60hz on PAL60 setting. The PAL50/PAL60 setting replaces the 480i/480p setting of the NTSC version of the console. The PAL version supports composite and RGB through its AV out. The NTSC version supports composite and S-Video. These differences make sense, considering that RGB was and is non-existent in the USA and has been a European standard since the 1970's. Progressive scan through component cables however, is a standard that never really caught on in Europe.

Does someone know has the ossc is actually compatible with many lcd/plasma tv’s ???? Because i readed that is contains a line buffer rather then a frame buffer, so it feeds only(digitized) scanlines to a hdtv via hdmi, so how could a hdtv deal with this type of signal via hdmi??? Even if it does accept this kind of weird signal then you might expect that it will eventually deinterlace it anyway, unless these hdtv’s can run in indirect mode in wich it view those scanlines immediately onscreen, (may by inserting a black frame per scanline ,but that means that that lcd or plasma screen should generate 1000’s of frames per second to keep up with scanlines in real time,just a theory, not sure but am curious about this, THX.

RoXolid Productions I looked into the retrotink, but it looks like it’s out of stock until December both from the creator and resellers. :(. I actually ended up ordering an ossc and am looking at just picking up an rgb modded n64 on eBay. Most of my other consoles do either rgb or component out natively anyways, and I don’t play much on the 3do these days.

If youR Nintendo 64 has an NS1 serial number you can actually do the mod yourself. I have a video here on the Channel showing you how I did it using one of Voltar's mod kits.

I've thought about that, but I'm not so great with microsoldering. I've seen a few on ebay premodded for around $120, but if I can get the kit and pay for modding service to do it for me at a much lower cost then I might go that route.

You can’t just “unlock” RGB from an NES. The PPU (graphics chip) only outputs composite. You have to essentially replace the PPU with an RGB-capable PPU. NESRGB and Hi-Def NES basically clone it even though they still fit the original on top. The only other RGB mod is using the PPU from an arcade machine like NES Play Choice 10 and the colors will be completely wrong.
@RoXolid
@RoXolid 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't mean to imply it's as easy to do as an SNES or Genesis. You can unlock RGB output by modding the console as you stated and as I meant.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 5 жыл бұрын
RoXolid Productions Yeah. I’m basically clarifying that it isn’t even there to be unlocked in the NES, even with modding. :( You have to use a clone system (FPGA AVS & Nt Mini) or a half-clone system (original + FPGA NESRGB & Analogue Nt) or get the RGB-capable parts from a completely different system (PlayChoice 10, Famicom Titler). Too bad it isn’t available in the original chips. :(

These are the forums you need to look into if you want to make the best use of the OSSC. shmups videogameperfection Also check OSSC - XRGB wiki for more important info This device exists because there were enough complaints (and tested proof) that the scaler industry was not doing anywhere near enough to get the quality we want. Thank Fudoh for mentioning that HDTV's scale better then most cheap/overpriced hardware and the OSSC is meant to take advantage of this fact.
