I have several instructional dvds Mr Harris has produced over the years and they are all treasure troves of information that I continually visit. I think Roy Harris is a genius and this interview was fantastic and look forward to seeing his future projects when they are available. Thanks for giving such a great interview 🙏

Couldn't agree more. To be such a pioneer, so far from his own white belt days, and truly be a Mt.Rushmore shoe-in of American BJJ....yet be attuned to the needs of a beginner & not so far removed as to be speaking solely in the esoteric shows a man with an eternally empty cup. The miles deep/wide/long knowledge is available if the student is ready, but he just as adeptly teaches Day One in language nervous First-Gi folks can grasp.

Thank you for this amazing interview! Back in 95-96, I started my jiu-jitsu journey with Master Fabio santos. I was a UCSD student and I could only afford 1x/week which was $70/month. I don't remember how I stumbled upon Mr. Harris' Friday night bjj class in the UCSD recreation room. I used it to supplement my 1x/week jiu-jitsu training. I was so drunk with the Gracie Kool-Aid that I didn't see how valuable someone like Roy Harris was. Thank you!

I’d love to hear the discussion about jiu-jitsu for different body types Knowing what you’re predisposed to do or have a slight advantage in and why also requires some depth of understanding the art Many guards, sweeps, passes and submissions work better for some people and genetics seem to play a role in this phenomenon

This was fantastic from both interviewer and interviewee. We had the honor of hosting Master Roy Dean a few years ago for a seminar/retreat with Masters from a few other arts. Not only did Master Roy Dean highly impress us with his skill and fluidity, he spoke highly of his instructor during the seminar which I thought was very honorable although now I see why. Side note: one of the Masters; Master Lee Crawford was I believe a 7th dan in Aikido and effortlessly phenomenal. She had Master Roy Dean who was also humble enough to participate as a student when the other Masters were teaching help us with some of the techniques and he was surprisingly just as effective in Aikido as he was in BJJ. Had us airborne with almost zero effort as did Master Lee Crawford.

Great interview from a great master. The one minor gripe, speaking from an egineering background, is that Roy's description of the formula being athleticism + technique should be Athleticism * Technique. The math operator should be multiply instead of addition. So if someone has an athleticism of 200 and technique of 10 as a whitebelt, he can beat a Purplebelt with athleticism of 50 and technique of 35. 200*10 is larger than 50*35. If you used the math operator of addition, this formula breaks down.

I really appreciated this sir! Both you Roy Dean and Roy Harris have a certain methodology that I believe everyone in martial arts should absorb into their growth. And I enjoy how you’ve connected spirituality and hope into your teaching as well, just as the Japanese and other “old school” martial artists did as well! Are there any affiliates or instructors you have under you in the Vancouver, BC Canada region by any chance? God bless you sir and all that you do for the martial arts community!

Roy Dean must know him since decades, why is he still calling him Mr. Harris? Is the use of the formal term of addressing one’s instructor typical in the US? I just wonder because usually Americans hardly ever use the family name and jump directly to the first name. Or is this something to be done in front of the public and in private they use their first names?
