Roy Orbison, knew, during HIS lifetime, that his fellow musicians, artists, and singers loved and appreciated him, and he was admired by his fans, so that must have brought a bit of joy into his life of sadness.

Roy was an amazing person as well as musician. This was a very special concert with many great musicians he mentored. I saw Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Rait, Jackson Browne, J. D. Souther, Jennifer Warren, k. d. Lang, Elvis Costello, and Tom Waits. I am sure there were more I couldn't pick out. He was much beloved. RIP Roy Ornison

Roy had a lot of tragedy in his life. His wife died in a motorcycle accident in 1966 and two of his kids died in a house fire, resulting in him no longer attending funerals. There is a story, don't know if it is true or not, that Elvis was asked what it was like to have the best voice in rock and roll. He responded, I don't know, ask Roy Orbison.

A great song to check out is Not Alone Anymore, by Traveling Wilburys. Orbison’s vocal talent is featured and highlighted by Jeff Lynne’s production skills. A testimony to Orbison is the reaction of Dylan, Petty, Lynne, And George Harrison to having Roy join them in the Wilburys. These superstars couldn’t believe their luck in getting Roy’s voice.

On the last frame of the song I spied a young k.d.Lang the smiling face to the right. Unless I'm mistaken. We were friends before she expanded into the crooner she became. She hit the clubs in Vancouver and we were her cheering squad at the Railway Club. The owners were so impressed by her performance that night that they put her into the Commodor a great place with a sprung dance floor. She knocked them over there too and was on her way.

Roy started out singing rockabilly, starting out on the tiny Je-Wel label in his homestate of Texas, quickly moving to the more well known (now legendary) Sun Records in Tennessee. But Roy really hit his stride once he moved to Monument Records. What a voice!

One of his saddest songs was Southbound Jerico Parkway ........ a song about suicide and the family aftermath.

Roy had such an amazing talent. Please check out Linda Ronstadt’s cover of one of his most beautiful songs, “Blue Bayou”. She is amazing. Also, kd lang did a beautiful duet with Roy as they redid his classic song, “Crying”. It will take your breath away. Actually, she is one of the three female backup singers in this performance. The amount of talent on the stage in this show is incredible.

When listening to Roy, you have two choices, all his early recordings, or thus Black & White concert. His stuff in the ,50's has real 1950 arrangements. Lots if smaltzy strings and corny back-up singers. They're good recordings, but definately a '50s recording. While the Black&White Night concert has modern arrangements where the strings aren't so smaltzy and the back-up vocals are smoother, and much less corny. The new arrangements were created by JD Souther of The Eagles. Plus the absolutely stellar musicians all live on one stage. And it is a great selection of Roys best songs. Would recommend your future reactions come from the Black&White Night concert, unless of course you want to get a feel for his recordings in the fifties. I was listening to Roy Orbison in my crib. Love him dearly.

My dad was a HUGE Roy Orbison fan. He took me to see him live in 1985(I was almost 10) at the NAC in Ottawa. I remember it being a simple show. Nothing too flashy but man did he have a presence on stage. And that voice. Made me a fan for life. Also this version of Only the Lonely is from an AMAZING CD/DVD production "A Black & White Night Live"

Many people have covered his music over the years. Van Halen did a cover of "Oh, Pretty Woman; Credence Clearwater Revival did a cover of Orbison's "Ooby Dooby"; Linda Ronstadt did an absolutely beautiful cover of "Blue Bayou" Roy Orbison was one of the Traveling Wilburys, identified on the Wilbury's albums as "Lefty" Wilbury/ - The Traveling Wilburys were a 'super group'. Along with Orbison they were George Harrison as Nelson Wilbury; Tom Petty as Charlie T. Wilbury; Bob Dylan as "Lucky" Wilbury; and Jeff Lynne (of ELO fame) as Otis Wilbury. The song and video for the song "End of the Line" are great ones for reaction videos.

Those shades were an accident. He left his regular glasses on a plane then had to fly to England for a tour and all he had was his prescription sunglasses so he had to make do. So while touring with the Beatles before they were a phenomenon in fact they were his opening act. He was self conscience about wearing sunglasses at night in a concert hall, however everyone loved it and He's worn them ever since.

Talk about a sad life. If you have time look back at his life. You can hear the hurt in his voice. His young life started out in the depression in Texas.

The Beetles opened for him on one of his tours of Britian.

After his two sons died the woman that would become his second wife, saved him, pulled him out of his depression, and later they had 2 sons together. All of Roy's sons when adults said that he was their best friend. Not often that you hear that.

They were riding their motorcycles Harri, she was a little ways behind Roy and, a guy was getting out of his vehicle and opened the door, she was to close to stop, she hit the door of the vehicle head on and it killed her! That's how it happened! God Bless, RIP Big O. Then he had a house fire and killed 2 of his 3 son's! Roy was a true blue, great husband, father!

Roy Orbison was such a nice man, from everything I hear, that his tragic loss goes far deeper than just losing his contributions to music. Just look at the legends of the music industry who happily jumped at the chance to appear on stage with the man for this amazing black and white concert from the late 80's. He sings a nice echo to this song in The Traveling Wilbury's hit "Handle Me With Care". Remember that when you get there someday! Also, kd lang is one of the female back up vocalists and she and Roy do an amazing duet of his song "Crying" which you should put on your ever growing list! Peace!!

Roy even influenced the Beatles so much that they asked him to appear with them on their first U;.S. tour. His schedule prohibited him from appearing. Their song Please, Please Me was originally so much like Roy, purposely, that George Martin asked them to do another song. They changed the song and it was still number one. Peace, Harri.

Roy Orbison was called the Caruso (a famous opera singer of the '30s & '40s) of rock n' roll. He had tons of hits and every one of them was great but this is one of my favorites.
