I saw these brothers in their later years. The lead singer sat on a stool. When he got ready to hit that note, he stood up, leaned back, hit that note, and HELLLLLLLLD IT! The placed erupted. It was a magnificent night at The Dell in Philly. They still had it. Thank you brothers for years of good music.

You know, I never hear anyone mention the 3 guys singing backup on this song but that tight harmony they throw at us at 2:23 and then bend the notes into a minor key is a real high point in this arrangement. It really comes thru on the studio version and something I wait for every time I hear this song. It's sort of like the drum break in the middle of "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins, we all know it's coming and we can't hardly wait for it. The Dells showed us what the great vocal tradition of the Doo Wop groups from the 1950's could look like the the 1970's.

@@williamg2552 I hear you- but all remain uniquely great. Marvin Jr (along with Mr. Levi Stubb's) remains the greatest lead group singer ever. Mr. Ruffin always greeted him as ' Mr. Iron Throat' & Dave's voice which had that sense of drama with lyrics & whose voice never left him ever. And as for Mr. Wynne, he's was perhaps (along with the Jolly Green Giant Mr. Al Green) the greatest ad lib male singer ever- able to extend songs with endless off the cuff riffs. One think is certain: music lovers will not see the likes of them & their peers again- ever! Those greats that are still here - we should give them their flowers while they're here.

The mighty DELLS had been making hit records in the music industry since 1952...and they were THE LIVING LINK between 1950's Doo-Wop, and the Soul/R&B Music of the 60's and '70's. And, as the years went by, and MOST OTHER '50's groups began to FADE, The DELLS' popularity actually INCREASED. He stayed with his wife and kids and I am sure that there was temptations from the outside. I read that one of his favorite things to do was cook and he would go to the store and shop for others in the community and cook for them. A truly honorable man. When I heard he had passed, it felt as though a family member had passed. We have all been truly honored to have him and blessed to have the legacy that he left. Love you always Marvin Junior. I was 3 years old at the time of this AWESOME performance,& thanks to older sisters I grew up appreciating so many talented musicians,& singers of that era. As society dictates, this style of "soul" R&B has given way to a more love- less, crass,& quite frankly....violent induced form of so called music. I know it's cliché, but they really don't make it like this anymore.

ABSOLUTELY CHICAGO'S BEST VOCAL GROUP, AND JUST LIKE THE FOUR TOPS, THEY KEPT THE SAME SINGERS FOR DECADES. AND WHEN THEIR LEAD SINGERS DIED, THEY DIDN'T WATER THE PRODUCT DOWN WITH REPLACEMENTS. THEY RETIRED. I SALUTE THESE BROTHERS. AND AM PROUD TO SAY MY VOCAL GROUP "PAPER BAG & CO". OPENED FOR THEM AT THE CHASE HOTEL IN MY HOME TOWN OF ST.LOUIS.

One of the Best "Class" Acts of a generation! I'll Never forget the last time we saw them live at the New Year's Eve Show at the Foxx Theatre in Detroit. They had that Theatre Lit Up!! Then suddenly they stopped and called for quiet. Someone in the close up front row was having a heart-attack. They stopped that Show until the paramedic came down the aisle, took the man out, then the Dells called for prayers for this man! I will never forget that, and after the Show, that's all you heard people discussing ... what a class act the Dells are! :-)

I was fortunate to see them perform in Baltimore on August 3, 2008. They were opening for Gladys Knight and I have to say, they stole the show. They still had those incredible voices and sounded better in person than they did on a recording.
