Hmm 🤔 well I have had very few campaigns that had a true end. In fact, with the exception of one, I have mostly had the games just fall apart rather than reach a conclusion. And I quite enjoyed the end of the single one I managed to finish. But as for unsatisfying, that’s maybe hard to say. Three maybe? One was where I first met my friend who is in multiple campaigns with me. That one is where the dm had set us up to sneak into the empress of the moon’s palace for the sake of some rebels, but had shot down all the ideas we had come up with and severely limited us on what we could get our hands on, making spells and spell components exponentially expensive. The frustration for that one was from the constant ideas shot down. We provided a wide variety of them and still got shot down and eventually the game ran into irl issues with one player needing to buckle down for finals. We stopped meeting up after that. One good thing was that friend I mentioned. He and I are still in multiple campaigns together and two of those are ongoing (we share a dm for a third but that dm has us in different campaigns on different days so we don’t play together necessarily for that one). Another one was more recently. So I had joined a campaign but the direction the party was going heavily divided on a deeply moral level, also in terms of play style. We had, basically, one player insisting we turn in the rebels we found and the other three of us deciding to join them. The dm had also told us before that session that he intended to wrap that campaign up due to lost interest and start a different one entirely, which we had all agreed to. But the moral divide was a harsh way to conclude the final session. Basically the one player, who made theirs a very “strength makes right” sort of character went with the corrupt authority while the rest of us joined the rebels and attempted to protect them in a final conflict that had the party not only split but also fight each other. In a way, it felt bad but it’s also just heavily incompatible party by that time and, like I said, might makes right type of character which meant more physical combat while the rest of us were playing more espionage, rp, and political intrigue. We did go on to play tyranny of dragons and have a far more compatible party, even despite the fact that the alignments are wildly all over the place lol. Also this is one of the campaigns now where my friend and I play together. Not the best end but it led to a better beginning. And lastly, this is the one that makes me saddest. I joined a citadel module campaign. It was honestly amazing and the players and I all clicked both in playstyle and with rp. It was brilliant and I loved it. We all got along great and the dm had done amazingly with weaving our backstories together while still running the module for us. The sad part? That one ended because multiple of us all had sudden work schedule changes. It was truly a sad day when we all basically said goodbye to each other. It just wasn’t a campaign we could keep going so we made the hard decision to end it. It was a very roleplay heavy game and I still miss it. But! Good things came after, like all these stories I shared. I ended up finding another group where I clicked like that and was also heavily rp and storytelling in their playstyle. I also took some of the traits and themes I had put into the citadel character and used those to inspire the new character. I still play this new one and it’s my absolute favorite of my characters at the moment (though I do adore all my characters). So yeah, horror stories and bad ends but overall, something was salvaged and was positive from each one.

Everyone's talked about the M Night Shamalon twist trope (if you dont know its an unnecessary twist) but it really is important to talk about especially with dnd since its so much easier to happen since most DMs make the story on their own and dont have someone questioning them I think the best way for people to understand the difference is to think of it like this Does your twist add anything? If it does, what would the effects be? Are you making a twist for the sake of it, or does it actually change things? And most importantly: Will the players like it? Never sacrifice fun for something that *seems* smart, because your players will not be in a good mood to enjoy a twist like that if it happens. This doesnt just apply to twist btw it applies to all dnd, players come first. Ok advice aside i gotta say this is probably one of the worst twist ive heard of LMAO like he just says "fuck it we ball" what was the dm expecting to happen??? I hope they managed to fix this cause MAN that is a bad twist
