RSG - The Smoke Generator on Wheels! at Linlithgow 11-01-14

It was a cold, clear Sunday morning in Linlithgow. That was until 55022 showed up and woke the town with what can only be described as a volcanic eruption! The Deltic was running from Bo'ness Junction to Yoker C.S. in Glasgow to collect translator coaches to be later delivered to Glasgow Works for transporting EMUs across non-electrified sections of the Strathclyde rail network.
Enjoy!
1. 1S03 - The diverted 0710 Leeds - Aberdeen service is this morning under the command of 43257 at the helm.
2. 0Z55 - Royal Scots Grey glides through the station into the Up Passenger Loop beyond where it will wait for half an hour before reversing back towards Glasgow.
3. 2P59 + 1R28 - 158869 departs with the 1033 Edinburgh - Dunblane service just as 170424 shoots by working the 1030 Glasgow Queen Street - Edinburgh service.
4. 1R46 - The conductor is seen performing his duties in preparation for the departure of 170452 to Edinburgh.
5. 0Z55 - 55022 thunders away from Linlithgow U.P.L. with a tone, a wave and a great deal of smoke towards Yoker.

Before the coming of the HST I used to go and see the last train from Hull, Paragon station for Kings Cross in London. At night you also got the benefit of the Deltic blowing incandescent particles of carbon out of the exhaust at it pulled away from the platform.

Gotta love that clag aswell as the huge amount of sound! In a way it reminds me of the good old Detroit engines! (Screaming detroit power)

its part of our heritage....its ok for them to still run today. Compared to all the pollution the trains in say India, China, etc push out, I think we'll be ok running these!

Global warming, Dave. When places start getting flooded due to rising sea levels, there will be bans on running and probably scrappage policy for equipment in all countries.

Yup, but until China, USA, and India stop building coal fired power stations it wont improve....Deltic fumes wont kill the planet! As for the Scrappage policy....the aforementioned countries are just not going to sign up for that! Its $$$ first, environment second. Always has, and sadly always will be! I will jst get my welly boots out!

I think they will when places start getting flooded. Miami will be the first to go. That's where the $$$ will start getting lost and then the pressure will be on. As for Deltic fumes, yes it is a small thing, but the bigger polluters won't toe the line if there are all kinds of exceptions. It has to be a concerted effort.

sounds like the deltic throttled up quicksmart after clearing the points: that would certainly explain the smoke, even on a light engine.

Haha indeed! Although I regret to inform you that since this upload, this line has now in fact been electrified. Not that that will affect the performance of a beast like this of course!

I done understand this fascination with "clag". Grey/blue smoke shows its burning oil, It's a sign of a worn out engine, so why would you celebrate it?

To me it sounds as if compression is uneven. A Deltic engine with so many cylinders shouldn't it sound like a humming, a buzz, even at low rev.per minute? I like the roar, but it indicates an engine with a problem. Except if the exhaust-pipe is made to enhance some of the cylinders (like Porsche-boxer).
