Rocky Marciano defended his title only 6 times. Twice against former Middleweight Ezzard Charles, Once against aging former light heavyweight Archie Moore, Once against the man he took the title from 39 year old Jersey Joe Walcott, Once against Britain's Don Cockell and once against some other fight I don't know the name of. Who were the 43 previous opponents he fought before he won the title and padded up his record ? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mp5lg9Sd1KjVZmw.html

The commentator was wrong. Rocky Marciano didn't knocked Joe Louis out in 6 rounds, but in 8 rounds that ended the Brown Bomber's legendary career. He was be slipping out of his mind which round Rocky did knockout a past prime Joe Louis. Good fight for Rocky on his road to take the title from Jersey Joe Walcott.

Marciano's 185 lb punching power doesn't come close to a 245 to 275 lb Ibeabuchi, Lewis, Vitali, Foreman or Fury type of Heavier Weighted Power which effortlessly produces more torque and leverage. If u had to break up large boulder would u use 8oz ball peen hammer or 8 lb sledgehammer? Size matters otherwise boxing wouldn't have 18 different weight classes. Featherweights would be fightin middleweights and cruisers would be fightin Super Heavies. There are no height divisions, age divisions or reach division, because weight at heavyweight boxing is one of the most important factor. Super Heavyweights are increasing because Eastern European fighters are now allowed to fight in the USA since around 2000 (Hall of Fame Klitschko brothers dominated Heavyweight boxing for TWENTY years) and international travel is much easier compared to 30 40 50 years ago. Even a new Bridgerweight division between 200 and 224 lbs was recently added because too many 215 lb heavyweights complained. We'll never-ever see small cruiserweights 182 lb Floyd Patterson, 183 lb Ezzard Charles and 184 lb Rocky Marciano as heavyweight champions again. Boxing has evolved, PROVEN QUALITY SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT SIZE MATTERS, like it or not.

@@petersimcox4745 In May 1950, the IRS finished a full audit of Louis' past returns and announced, that with interest and penalties, he owed the government more than $500,000. Louis had no choice but to return to the ring. The Louis camp negotiated a deal with the IRS under which Louis would come out of retirement, with all Louis's net proceeds going to the IRS. A match with light heavyweight Ezzard Charles - [ who had acquired the vacant (paper champion) heavyweight title in June 1949 by outpointing Walcott ] - was set for September 27, 1950. Louis was 36 and had been retired for 2 years! Weighing in at his heaviest ever 218 lbs, Joe's washed reflexes were gone, and prime 183 lb light heavyweight Charles repeatedly beat him to the punch. By the end of the fight, Louis was cut above both eyes, one of which was shut tight by swelling. Charles battered Joe till his face looked like hamburger. He knew he had lost even before Charles was declared the winner. The result was not the only disappointing aspect of the fight for Louis; only 22,357 spectators paid to witness the event at Yankee Stadium, and his share of the purse was a mere $100,458. Louis had to "continue" fighting.

@@petersimcox4745 What Marciano fans refuse to accept and acknowledge is that Louis was FORCED to come out of retirement for his match with light heavyweight Charles. [[ Remember when prime 25 year old Ali lost 3 years? Remember when prime 26 year old Tyson lost 3 years? Both definitely lost a step and were never the same because father time waits for No-One!!! ]] Louis already had 54 (debut 1932) amateur fights,, 68 professional fights,, and 96 fights before 2 million soldiers during his 4 year military service. In other words Joe had already been fighting and sparing thousands of rounds for TWENTY YEARS before facing Marciano. He was also showing symptoms of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. CTE was once known as dementia pugilistica, or punch-drunk syndrome. Marciano vs Louis was no different than Holmes vs Ali or Tyson vs Holmes. BUT BUT Joe Louis was still a perfectly fine top-notch quality opponent in the eyes of Rocky fans because Joe was on an 8 fight winning streak before facing Rocky... Let's examine these 8 boxers: 196 lb Cesar Brian -- Unanimous Decision 197 lb Cesar Brian -- (twice) -- UD 191 lb Freddie Beshore -- KO 187 lb Omelio Argrmonte -- UD 188 lb Omelio Argrmonte -- (twice) -- UD 194 lb Andy Walker -- TKO 190 lb 104-44-4 -- Lousy washed Lee Savold -- KO 179 lb light heavyweight Jimmy Bivens -- UD Talk about bum of the month club, WOW. @@petersimcox4745 October of 1951, the 37 year old washed Brown Bomber faintly resembled the well-oiled and efficient fighting machine he was during the mid to late 1930’s. He had nothing left offensively but a semblance of his left jab. He was slow of both hand and foot, and needed to have his feet set perfectly in order to get off. His punching power had all but evaporated, evidenced by him scoring only 3 knockouts in his last 10 fights. Due to Louis not having the punch to bother Marciano, in addition to him needing to be lined up perfectly to get off, Joe was never in the fight. Louis was devoid of everything in his offensive arsenal. Joe’s speed and power were just a memory. His accuracy and timing were long gone and his reflexes were no longer instinctive. Joe Louis was a sitting duck for Marciano’s aggression and work-rate. In other words Joe had nothing left to neutralize Rocky. By contrast, Marciano was just entering his prime. Few boxing insiders believed Louis had a chance. Fighting back tears, Ferdie Pacheco said in the SportsCentury documentary about Louis' bout with Marciano, "He (Louis) wasn't just going to lose. He was going to take a vicious, savage beating." In the dressing room after the fight, Louis's military touring companion, Sugar Ray Robinson, wept. However, prime for prime it’s a different story. Marciano would have had to deal with Louis’ explosive and hard jab, set-up uppercuts and finishing hooks and right hands. Rocky woulda carried the fight to Joe, and instead of meeting him at center ring and trading, Louis would have inched back and countered Marciano and looked to fight him on the inside with his back to the ropes. Because Louis needed little room to punch and could get off in tight quarters, he would have been able to punch inside and beat Marciano's round punches to the mark all night.

@@dirtyjew1974 First bout was in Detroit on Sept. 7, 1954. Sonny Liston showed his greatness against Marty Marshall. While laughing at Marty's unorthodox ring tactics, Liston was caught by a Marshall right hand and suffered a broken jaw on both sides but still went the distance, losing on an eighth-round split decision. Liston said he never felt so much pain in his life. He met Marshall again seven months later, on April 21, 1955, and won by a sixth-round TKO after flooring Marshall four times. Not only could Liston violently smash opponents, but he could take a punch too. Liston proved he was champion material just like Ali did vs Norton when he got his jaw snapped. Third bout was 1956-03-06 at Duquesne Gardens, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Referee: Buck McTiernan Judge: Ernie Sesto Judge: George Lupinacci "Sonny Liston, 203, St. Louis, won an easy decision over Marty Marshall, 179, Detroit, in the 10-round main event of a fight card at the Gardens tonight. Both judges and referee Buck McTiernan scored the bout the same-the first round even and the next nine for Liston. Marshall spent most of his time retreating." - Associated Press Liston sure wasn't laughing when he smashed Patterson not once but twice to become & remain Heavyweight Champion of the world. Didn't little 182 lb cruiserweight Patterson KO the great Archie Moore? YES.. "I felt Floyd Patterson is a vastly improved fighter. He was a shell of himself but won his last bunch of fights in a row over good competition. Coming into the bout, Marciano was a 6½-to-5 underdog. You gave a long list of mostly opponent type fighters who stopped fighting after Marciano. Some had long records but after all those fights only quit after Marciano. In other words, let's say a fighter had a 20-21 record or 20-10 record. He didn't quite after any of the 20 or 21 fights but only after Marciano. Of course many continued fighting. Anyway, boxing experts have said that no one was the same after fighting him. For example, Roland LaStarza put up a good fight in their second fight and the first one was close. His arms and blood vessels and bones were damaged from blocking punches. He was in bad shape. Marciano was a huge puncher.

He probably should have lost the decision to Ted Lowry. Some of his opponents were suspect and one of his KOs smells funny. August 23, 1948 he supposedly knocked out middleweight Eddie Ross in one round. The very next day Ross was miles away in Quebec City putting the kibosh on Billy Sparks in four rounds.
