Great to watch. Sadly, Jersey Joe is, for the most part, forgotten, he was a great fighter. Also, I am not belittling in any way the important contributions of Jackie Robinson, but I think that Joe Louis deserves more credit for the rising popularity and the general acceptance of the black athlete.

@Pickel Sandwich He didn't bring the race card into it. He was just talking about Joe Louis's historical significance as a black person who became arguably America's most beloved sports figure of the time. How is that bringing the "race card" into anything? He's just offering an opinion on Louis's historical significance.
@kforcer
@kforcer 4 жыл бұрын
@Pickel Sandwich You are being incredibly sensitive. For one thing, it is just a video comment, which in no way impedes your viewing of the video. Secondly, Joe Louis IS an athlete of immense historical importance, both for the reasons I outlined and for even more reasons--for the role he played in WW2, for the donations he made to the war effort, including donating his entire purse to the armed services more than once--and for the people whose lives were profoundly influenced by him. Maybe you aren't aware of Joe Louis's historical importance but it is what it is. He's a historical figure, this is a video featuring him and people are inevitably going to discuss his legacy with extends far beyond boxing in videos that feature him.
@kforcer
@kforcer 4 жыл бұрын
One of the most famous quotes regarding Joe Louis was, "'he is a credit to his race and by that I mean the human race." He is a towering figure in the history of both America and American sports. He changed people's attitudes, showed incredible generosity and patriotism and on top of that set a record that will probably never, ever be broken.
@kforcer
@kforcer 4 жыл бұрын
@Pickel Sandwich Do you know the uploader? Do you know why he uploaded the video? You can't be very familiar with Joe Louis and his legacy to say that Joe Louis is remembered as nothing but a great boxer. Perhaps that is how you remember him but the fact is that he has a historical significance that extends beyond boxing. His fight with the German Max Schmeling the year before World War 2 began was one of the most culturally significant sporting events and boxing matches ever and the patriotism Louis showed during World War 2, including his endorsement of the American military effort in spite of the specter of segregation and his aforementioned charity towards the Armed Forces were hugely important. Read up on him some time, it doesn't sound like you are familiar with his legacy.

I think Jersey Joe Walcott was the first black heavyweight contender to genuinely inspire public support: the first black vs black championship contest (Louis vs. Walcott) to engender acceptance of the concept. Rocky Marciano's reign was a brief return to white domination of the heavyweight division. Since then, only Vladimir Klitkscho has stood out. Ingemar Johanssen was a blip on the radar - Floyd Patterson made sure of that.

@@tylerbob4853 In the British Commonwealth countries, it's not about race - never has been. Unfortunately, in the US, the colour of a man's skin has been an ongoing issue for centuries. That's what my comment was about. I could have mentioned the hatred Jack Johnson inspired: an African-American with excellent taste in clothes, food, music, cars ... and women. And he was a brilliant boxer as well. Joe Louis went a long way towards repairing the damage to race relations caused by Johnson.

Jersey Joe's flashy style was more eye-catching but he didn't ruffle Joe who's style was less flashy but far more deadly, Joe didn't spend all his time running after the elusive Walcott but his footwork is awesome he was always working into range and balanced to punch at the smallest opening, Walcott could punch too , the flashy showboating stuff was more suited to close up TV years later which brought it into people's homes and gave you a ringside seat

I don't think he actually won the first fight, imho. But, we aren't able to see the entire fight, so we can't accurately score it by then or now standards. In their first fight, yes, Louis got knocked down a few times but he still was the aggressor the entire fight and hammering away to the end. With what we can't see...we simply don't have all the facts to judge it. That said, Walcott was his best in the first fight, of course. Perhaps even one of the best fights of his life then. The Brown Bombers "best fight" was his very LAST professional fight? Not when Joe faced Max Schmelling the 2nd time, when he beat him in the 1st round in 2 minutes? The fight lauded as the battle between Good & Evil...East vs West? Me thinks you are inaccurate. By the time he faced Rocky, all he had left of his earlier arsenal was that powerful left jab. Honestly, I take prime Joe Louis, the most complete boxer in History, over ANY other. Feel free to think otherwise but not only was Joe Louis a hell of a boxer, who holds the heavy weight title the longest still to this day, but he was one heck of a human being...a really good man. Walcott did not CLEARLY win their first fight, imho. Louis was hammering away all the way to the end, but yes, he was knocked down a few times. That said, Louis was the one who was the aggressor for the vast majority of it and in those times, the champion had to be clearly beaten in order to take the title. There also is a LOT of missing footage that we haven't been able to see yet...though what we do see seems to be a lot of Walcott's highlights. He may have still lost a decision. Louis's jab was finding him.

Walcott very likely beat Louis when they fought the 1st time. Louis won a 15 round split decision. Probably based on his popularity. Jersey Joe also went to the 13th with Marciano at age 38 and even dropped Rocky in the 1st. Marciano finally caught Jersey Joe in the 13th. Walcott did more than simply dance. He could box and fight. For some of you who obviously know so little of boxing history.

Jersey was the best foot mover back then looked to me to be like a outboxer in the way he kept his distance but was more a brawler/ counter puncher he could catch George with some shots from counters but I dont see him doing a jim sense he was a way more advanced then wal and jim was a full outboxer and add jersey wasnt that tough for damage this is where that outdated movement like I always say comes in people will say Louis could beat George yet Jersey footwork was better and jerseys counters was way more all of a sudden like a mike that Louis never could do from 1 pinpoint punch louis would be destroyed way faster then jersey would like I said uptop jersey stance was more like a outboxer which I said mutiple time Louis would need to do to not be destroyed fast he would need to move they said I was wrong I wasnt same as mike would destroy George cause of the same reasons jersey showed counterpunches and fast combos with great aim
