Hey Jay, I'm a graduate student doing research in ML and AI. What kind of tests are you looking for? In general, the reason GPUs are so heavily used in deep learning applications is because training a neural network with a huge dataset requires a large number of matrix multiplications, much of which can easily be parallelized via a GPU. There are several bottlenecks when it comes to training a neural network on a GPU. The amount of data you load into memory could exceed the total memory of the card. This happens quite often for huge datasets, which is why most people do batch learning where we train a model on a small subset of the data at a time. Another bottleneck could be the size and complexity of the neural network. A small, simple neural network can be handled on a CPU. More complicated architectures such as ResNet, LSTMs, DenseNet, etc. are more demanding. If you want to see the true benefits of the RTX Titan, you will probably want to try two types of tests. One, train a neural network that can be handled by both cards and show that the Titan finishes training much faster. Two, try to find problems where training the model on the RTX 2080 Ti causes "out of memory" errors or is extremely slow even with batch learning. Maybe some deep reinforcement learning tasks would be good to show as well.

BTW do you think multiple 2080ti will perform worse than a titan if so why? They both have same ram
@17Codiferus
@17Codiferus 5 жыл бұрын
@@abcdxx1059 "perform worse" in what sense? There's workloads that would scale linearly, as you probably expect, as well as workloads that heavily benefit from multiple physical devices. Maybe you're training one model on an absurd multi petabye dataset, or perhaps your training a whole network of adversarial models with much, much less data. Part of the problem with "benchmarking" ML and AI in general is if you're doing it right it's non-deterministic, executing the same code more than once can, will, and does produce sometimes drastically different results. Thus the synthetics.
@Need1Docta
@Need1Docta 5 жыл бұрын
@@abcdxx1059 When it comes to hardware performance, what most people care about is training time. Training a network could take weeks. Calculating the weights is the most time consuming part, not the evaluation component. Honestly, I don't know too much about how multiple GPU configurations would help in terms of RAM. Traditionally, deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow treat each GPU separately and you, as the user, have to figure out how to distribute your network and workload across the GPUs. The RAM didn't ever really add up. But with the new NVLink/NVSwitch technology, supposedly, you can take multiple 2080 Ti's and have them treated as a single, large GPU with shared memory. As far as I know, there aren't really any benchmarks as to how true this claim is. If it is true, then honestly, I'm confused why NVIDIA even released the RTX Titan cause people can just get two 2080Ti's for much better performance for the same price.

this actually draws my interest as the reason the 2080ti is 11gb is due to it having one less "memory core" (i forgot the actual name) and it even has one unpopulated spot on the board so if the fully populated board on the titan is double what we expected (24 instead of 12) then it stands to reason using higher density ram chips we could double the 2080ti capacity to 22gb. granted its not going to be that simple but hacking gpu bios has been around since the late 90's at least, so its an interesting line of investigation.

Someone who does 3D-graphics and uses a GPU renderer like Redshift or Octane will run in to problems with rendering times if the scene uses more memory than is available on the card. Gaming cards with 8 or 12 gigs are usually enough for freelance work, but there might be some specific cases where a scene will use a ton of memory. Big Hollywood studios are also slowly moving towards GPU rendering solutions so someone who does lighting and rendering could use one of these cards. Texture painting software like Mari also benefits a lot from high memory. Titan RTX is actually relatively cheap compared to the quadro alternatives so I could see it being useful for many people.

I'd agree. Having much more VRAM eliminates the freezes when relaunching the game a lot or running several game clients at the same time, which is something you would be doing when testing multiplayer. Hey Jay, some people say it's not worth upgrading to the 2080 Ti for gaming at 1440p max settings over 100fps. I think these cards are more aimed towards 4K monitor game players and not just 1440p. Especially that now we're getting 4K 144hz monitors well over $1,000 in price like the Acer Predator X27. My MSI Gaming X Trio 2080 Ti runs games over 100fps at 4K... Technology is getting so superb now that we're literally achieving frames above 100fps at max settings in 4K resolution and this is why we're getting monitors that can support those high frames at that resolution. I have nothing overclocked on my computer at all and I reach up to 120 fps at times at 4K resolution WITH max settings on my 2080 Ti. I play Black Ops 4 (not as graphically intense as say...GTA5) all the time, but I achieve an average of 100fps at 4K easily in an entire online match in that game alone without breaking a sweat. The 2080 Ti is a monster. Black Ops 4 is probably not the best example, but at least it's there for evidence and something a lot of you can think about. If you don't game in 4K, don't buy the 2080 Ti or the RTX Titan. It's really that simple. The 1080 Ti can even do 4K (barely past 60 to 70fps tho) and can achieve really high fps at 1440p in the high 100-150fps too. Why spend over $1,000 on a GPU if you're not gonna game in the highest resolution other than CAD, content creation, modeling, etc.? That's just my opinion... Also, you can actually take advantage of the extra VRAM of that RTX Titan by increasing the render resolution of games being played. Example, I know if I adjust the render resolution under Black Ops 4's settings when I'm already playing at 4K, that my VRAM increases HEAVILY and can actually max out my 2080 Ti VRAM. Especially by turning the render resolution to at least 140 when it's already at 4K. lol. I keep at 100 tho cuz there's no real use for it when high frames is the goal. With over 20+ VRAM on the RTX Titan, I'm sure most could potentially increase that render resolution to 200. That would literally double the graphical resolution to 8K but being played at 4K I'd imagine. Although I agree that another $1,000 wouldn't justify a couple settings being altered to achieve something like that...

It is good for GPU rendering (iRay, Octane) where you need your scene to be stored in VRAM to actually work. Considering multiple 4096x4096 (and higher res) textures on each object - it takes a lot of memory and 11 GB is not enough. So this is professional card that is good for semi-professional rendering jobs (big studios go for Quadro rendering farms, I guess).

Have ANY rendering engines been updated to take advantage of RTX? I haven't checked in a few weeks, but Nvidia's own Mental Ray and iRay haven't been updated to take advantage of RT cores, and V-Ray's makers have said they've been working with Nvidia for a year, but still haven't updated V-Ray to use the new hardware. Autodesk seems to be in a similar spot with Arnold - press releases that they're working on an update, but no update released. RTX seems to make more sense for rendering than gaming, but months after the hardware release, there doesn't appear to be any software available to assess how much it accelerates rendering.

I mean, gaming rings in so so so exponentially higher in demand, it's not even something that can be expressed.... it's Windows 3.1 vs 10... it's an abacus vs ... windows 10... It's a computer in a rudimentary software setting, crunching away after you click "cook", rendering out some basic textures on some basic low poly (in respect to games) shapes, with pre baked lighting, and zero effects (in respect to gaming), with no dynamic anything. Workstation laptops do it with ease.... 5 Grand in video cards is something you will not EVER find in any of the places I've worked... It's for professionals meaning electrical and software engineers that are developing using A.I. running multiple tests at a time, (note this is only one of many things these cards are used for). Not just CAD software like Autodesk, or Dassault Systèms products. I am an electrical engineer and can attest to the purpose of these cards being affordable to do simple testing at home. The titan is basically a way an engineer can conduct independent research and testing at home without having to work through an online virtual system. It is costly to use online systems for machine learning, and building your own titan based system at home is worth it. Gpus add computing power to systems so using products like Matlab, and Labview will benefit for complex programming. Matlab and Labview are both specialized coding software used by engineers as well. I apologize if I said too much, but misinformation is not okay. That's why he stated he would test with Deep learning and machine learning, these are all forms of A.I.. now if you are just a CAD draftsman then no, I create CAD drawings with a rtx 2070 on my personal system.

Hey Jay, i am a Cloud Specialist and i can add a little info for your video. The Tensor core on nvidia cards are gaming changing since most of Tensor resources we have to run models in the cloud are software based, which adds a layer of overhead for most things we wanna do. For example to run any Deep Learning model on the AWS Cloud, we pay for underlying hardware that is not designed for AI applications, so the software do all the job. With hardware tensor cores, a new path opens for developers to use low level APIs to reach specific goals. I hope the big cloud companies start to acquire those cards to provide hardware oriented AI services!

SLI is a scam, as it never scales well for 80% of the games, best to buy the best single card solution money can buy. On that note I just ordered my Titan RTX today cause I was a good boy this year! Also, I refuse to buy a video card with just 11GB of RAM (which rules out the RTX 1080 Ti) as that has been an old outdated standard for 3 years now. 24GB feels like a real upgrade with some head room. I feel sorry for all you RTX 1080 ti owners as your title of fastest card only lasted 2 months but you should have known there would be a Titan on the horizon.

Yeah, exactly. They had a few supporters left, but now it turns out that NVIDIA let people believe that they simply shifted the naming and that the 2080 Ti is the new full chip GPU. That would have meant that pricing actually stayed the same. But now it turns out that they really just increased pricing and that they want an even bigger premium for the full chip GPU.

Not really, the new RTX cards in my opinion are for 3D work. When you buy a 2500 dollar card, you don't get it for playing games and waste your time, you get it as an assets to make you more money, that card is for working, not playing. If you want to play games go get a switch or a xbox one.

Mike Williams threadripper is already bottlenecked with a SINGLE 2080ti. I have both a 1920x and a 1950x system, both have 2080ti cards in them. One is a FE and the other is a evga FTW3. Intel 8700k or 9900k get WAY more frames all day. Threadrippers are NOT for gaming. They can game, but they arent great at it. Never buy a TR for just gaming. The same day I received my RTX 2080Ti, this week (had been waiting for the MSI Gaming variant to become available in my country, since August last year, but it never came in stock so I gave up and got a different brand), I ran the FFXV benchmark, and saw there was 1 card faster than mine. That was the first time I heard about the Titan RTX. Kind of considered returning my new card and get a Titan instead, but it'd just be a waste of money, for gaming only. And it's not even that much faster apparently, for games. If it had been 50ish % faster, I would have bought one.

All these new RTX cards are way ahead of their time and its going to take years for game developers to really show what they can do. I think new games built from the start with RTX tech will really push these cards and then people will start to see the difference between older cards. performance to cost is low for now with these RTX cards but they do future proof your pc.
