I’ve always associated a “rub” joint with hide glue and the absence of clamps. Spread hide glue, rub till the glue grabs then set it aside without clamping. The joint will be drawn tighter as it dries. I agree you can rub two boards together to spread glue but it’s not quite a rub joint.

Great tip. I'll also start using a paper towel instead of my pants leg to wipe off the glue

Biscuits don't add any strength. I've seen the same thing said elsewhere. Humor me; try something. Take a board edge and cut two biscuit slots and glue in two biscuits half way like you were going to join it to another board. Let them cure at least a few hours. Once cured, try to pull one out. Feel free to use pliers. On the other biscuit, try to break it off. If either one of them survives intact, try to shear it off. Once you've tried to do these things please tell me again how they add no strength.

Apologies Mike, I should have more accurately stated that they add no more strength than a well-glued, long-grain joint. Certainly, they'll add strength to short-grain and end-grain joints, and I'd very much recommend them for strength in those situations. Again, apologies for imprecision. - DT

Not to sorry!! It's all good. I'm pretty much a neophyte in the wood world and way out of my comfort zone. It just always made me scratch my head when I saw the 'no additional strength' statement. From a mechanical standpoint I always asked myself how could it not? Much grass! Make it a good day.

Mike Bernd I wholeheartedly agree... another aspect to consider for those who espouse such an absurd notion is something commonly observed when glue strength tests are performed, many times one will witness the break appear to occur in the joint itself however when closely inspected it reveals the glue line still intact with a small amount of the wood from the broken board still attached meaning the glue proved stronger than the wood and that technically the joint was not compromised however for all intents and purposes it may as well have failed considering such a similar result.... biscuits/dowels/dominoes all add an extremely powerful and unique element of strength to a wood joint.
