Our yachts use one of three rudder designs; a single rudder with a skeg on our fin keel or twin keel options or twin rudders on our lifting keel yacht and the twin keeled 40DS, we also have the option of a third rudder (watch the video to find out why). All three models are available with all the keel options as well as having a saildrive or a shaft drive engine installation.

You don't see manufacturers go into this kind of detail. I don't think most want you to think about the issues with the popularity of twin rudders, spades vs. skeg, etc. The clever solutions you put into the interior are amazing - of course you have put that much thought into rudders, and multiple configurations. I can't wait to see the 48DS...... :-)

If one were purchasing a Sirius Yacht for Live aboard sailing in mostly northern climates....which Rudder / keel configuration would be most desirable? Which is most sturdy and robust?
@SiriusYachts
@SiriusYachts 2 жыл бұрын
It depends how far north and whether your cruising ground is tidal or if your harbours are restricted by draught. All our keel configurations are sturdy and robust. For our rudders, a single rudder has the extra protection of a skeg. Which would lead you to a twin or single keel. But the lifting keel has two rudders which may be more vulnerable to floating objects (no skeg and not hidden in the wake of the keel), but you have two of them. There is more information about our choice of keels here: www.sirius-yachts.com/choosing-the-best-keel/

Ok, that's interesting:) Why don't you use thrust vectoring? (or how would you call it; rotating the prop around the vertical axis) - it looks like there is a vertical axle anyway, and it should be a similar force to a single rudder bearing, so not that hard structurally. Longer lever arm?
@esquire9445

Reliability. When we cross oceans we want stuff that doesn’t break. The number one reason people are forced to abandon their boat in the middle of the Atlantic is they lose steering. Many people install wind vane based steering, a very old way of auto steering, just so they have a backup rudder.
@pmj_studio4065
@pmj_studio4065 3 жыл бұрын
@@esquire9445 so the "thrust vectoring" is less reliable? Ok, that makes sense.
@McDoucheVonDouche

I think the reason why azimuth pod sail drives isnt a thing, is the cost. A fairly basic saildrive is pretty expensive. Now what we probably will see more of (I know Elan is doing this) is electric drives where you get two saildrives for two rudders. Solves the need for the third rudder, and ~doubles regen while sailing. (Making it a little more viable) With a config like this you can use differential thrust to manouver easily. Downside is off course cost again, and a technology in its infancy. I'm a believer in electric engines for sailing boats. But different segments require different levels of reliability. Me the coastal leisure sailor could easily do with a fairly modest battery bank and an electric sail drive. But if I was going to cross oceans, I would at minimum require some sort of reliable way to generate energy for the batteries (generator, hydrogen?, methanol fuel cell) other than solar or wind (wind generator or regen through props). More stuff is also more parts that can fail. Sorry for the rant.
@justincruz8352
@justincruz8352 3 жыл бұрын
@@McDoucheVonDouche eventually electric will take over in sailing im sure. Battery tech isn’t quite there. Solid state batteries should be coming soon and of course a few years after that till they’re somewhat affordable. Now on a catamaran it makes more sense now due to the higher speeds for regen. You don’t really start making real decent power till 7 or 8 knots.
@esquire9445
@esquire9445 3 жыл бұрын
@@McDoucheVonDouche I think hydrogen is the way to go because of weight. The problem is it isn’t efficient to generate. I’ve looked into it, you would need to be plugged into a doc for a week to generate enough hydrogen to have enough fuel to cross an ocean. My calculations were for the equivalent of 1000 liters / 265 gallons of diesel. Basically, a shore electrical connection will give you enough electricity to generate 4 kilos / 8.8 lbs of hydrogen a day. On top of that problem it’s impossible to know if you have a leak anywhere. End rant.

Why not balanced rudder?
@SiriusYachts
@SiriusYachts 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for asking. All our rudders are balanced to different degrees. The single rudder has a skeg and is semi-balanced rudder, the twin rudders are balanced. We explain more here: www.sirius-yachts.com/best-rudder-design/ Because of the increased pressure/turbulance from the propeller under power nearer the hull we use a skeg on our single rudder yachts. As the propwash goes between the twin rudders these don't need skegs.

What happens when the three rudder swing keelboat takes to the ground? That fwd rudder must fold right up?
@SiriusYachts
@SiriusYachts 3 жыл бұрын
….no need to. The fwd rudder directly behind the prop is the least deep of the three by far. The swing keel sticks out of the hull by 20cm with the full length of the leading edge to give you longitunal guidance driving and to take the full load when drying out. On sand this keel will sink in 5-10cm. Only than the two outer rudders will touch the ground and stabilize the boat standing like on a tripod, preventing to end up heeled sidewards. The middle rudder will still be clear of the ground by more than 10cm in this sitiuation, as it is also only needed in the mid to upper area behind the prop under the hull…
@adrikoko9705
@adrikoko9705 2 жыл бұрын
@@SiriusYachts I am assuming that more then 3/4 of the boat weight will be pressured on the swing keel (bolt?) since that the two rudders are at the stern. They will help keep the boat balanced while standing on a dry surface and not carrying too much of the weight as the swing keel is doing. While in sand this wouldn't be a problem. Meanwhile, I can see how safe it is to keep a twin keel boat on hard surface (concrete/asphalt) can the same be done with a swing keel boat?

@@SiriusYachts That's difficult to say as everything is a compromise, isn't it? Generally I'd consider a full skeg over a half skeg just so a line wouldn't get caught around the rudder, and avoid gaps where a line could get wedged in. Also on that note - I'd have a line cutter installed on the prop shaft. That might avoid lines tangling around the rudder at all. In the end, a setup that allows me to get rid of tangles with a boat hook is better than needing to get in the water. Of course I recognize a full skeg would probably make close quarters manoeuvrability not as good as advertised for your boats. Maybe develop a twin rudder / twin electric motor sailboat. That could spin you right round. Also, is Sirius going to offer an electric option some day?
@SiriusYachts
@SiriusYachts 3 жыл бұрын
@@ajnasreddin You're right, everything is a compromise. We prefer to make yachts that are easy to manoeuvre, that can be turned quickly and easily. The area forward of the stock 'grabs' more of the flow from the propeller under power making the rudder more effective, but a full skeg will lose this extra 'power'. We also prefer the lightness on the helm that a balanced rudder provides when sailing Some yachts with full skegs can be very hard work on the helm. These are benefits you'll experience every day you sail or motor the boat, not the 1 day, say, every 20-40 years of sailing you might pick up a lobster pot. We can, however, add deflectors on the bottom of the skeg as well as rope cutters to the propellers - we'll add what our owners want. The day we offer electric power passed some time ago...We currently (no pun intended) have a electrically powered 40DS in development for an owner at the moment, she will have twin rudders and twin drives that provide propultion and regeneration. Fun times ahead!
@ajnasreddin
@ajnasreddin 3 жыл бұрын
@@SiriusYachts Good points, but whether or not you encounter lobster pots really depends on where one is sailing. It seems that in Maine waters (northeast US) not hitting a lobster pot is the exception. It would be great if you could highlight your electric options in a video one day. Electric motors, batteries, and recharging options vary greatly, and it would be interesting to see what Sirius is offering.

if i could order i would choose a inflatable one. sealed doors and windows. even if the yacht upsidedown, reversed, it will return to the correct position (but i suggestion a mast not allows it happen, maybe). anyway it would be better then lost all yacht , just cut off must and maybe even can save the mast. (or mast can be broken after storm). inflatable like closed lifeboats. and inside of the yacht too 2 or 3 doors can be sealed.
