This is footage of Rudolph Nureyev and Karen Kain and of a second cast rehearsing Nureyev’s production of ‘The Sleeping Beauty' for the National Ballet of Canada.
The set designer for this production was to be Nicholas Georgiadis, who Nureyev had used on many enterprises.
What’s interesting for me in this video was hearing Nureyev and Kain discussing technical problems - using highly technical language, like when the ballerina says “if there’s too much yank, I can’t control my force”!
Enjoy!

I’m fascinated more by Nureyev trying to teach the men how to be noble & expressive, not only through upper body, but also explaining the suspense that can be created through placement & timing of the feet - don’t just do the steps - PERFORM them.

Too bad Nureyev wasn't actually that great, with some very bizarre body technique on stage -- he started professional training far too late. Given the chance and excellent training, these men could have surpassed Nureyev; but he had to be the star. His timing was right. When he defected to the West, Western male dancers had not had the kind of training that produced the great Russian dancers.

I don’t really understand this kind of criticism. Think of all he achieved with only three years of classical training - the best classical training. Imagine what he might have become if he’d begun formal training at a young age. Yet despite, being a late starter, he changed the face of classical ballet. Other dancers, by his own admission, may have been more technically proficient but no one ever took the stage the way he did. No one has ever out performed him. He could stand still with his back to the audience and you couldn’t take your eyes off him. The way he moved on stage - just to see him walk - he owned the stage. He was a prince it was impossible to believe otherwise. I’ve never seen any other dancer who could do that. There is a whole lot more to dancing than technique.

Dear Alex, really interesting are the videos with reherseal of the ballets, the comment of the dancers, their grimace of effort. They are very happy when it comes to Rudy, of which i am a big fan, especially for his contribution to more popularity in the classic ballet in the west

i am very fond of rehearsals too - you have insights into the difficulties and the way things are worked out between the dancers that you don't see in performance. i am a big Rudi fan- and saw hi a lot on stage, particularly in London in the 1970s. he made ballet popular to w much wider audience than it had had. like a pop star!!

Thanks for the reply, John Hall. I am surprised this was from 1986; I thought it would have been somewhat earlier....didn't Erik Bruhn die in 1986? I suppose you could say he doesn't look so great in this footage.

This clip is part of a longer documentary, "Bold Steps: The National Ballet of Canada", which was released in 1986. As to when the rehearsals in the film actually took place: The film follows the National Ballet's rehearsals for a gala event featuring Baryshnikov, Nureyev's appearance in The Sleeping Beauty, and a new production of La Bayadere. All of those gala events took place in mid-1984, so this footage of the rehearsals is from late 1983 or early 1984. Some time between when Bruhn began his directorship in July 1983 and the opening night of Nureyev in The Sleeping Beauty in May 1984.
