Pete's jump slide after the keyboard break has to be one of the most rock moments in the history of rock. And then you have John at the end looking at Roger and give him a simple nod of, "Well played, mate." What a performance by the band!

When it comes to The Who, everyone talks and talked about the bass. John Entwistle is the greatest rock bassist to ever live. His bass runs on 5:15 are absolutely incredible. The shit runs right through your body. RIP, John and Keith. Best rock band I've ever seen and heard live. From the first time I saw them as a 15 year old kid in 1965, unti now, I've loved this band.

He did hurt them over a period of time and has been seen to say that onstage he became possessed and just did what he felt . Entwistle said he would always be watching as he did not want him sliding into him. Amazing this whole band were a lead everything and I don't think people get that. And many bands have stolen much from them , the microphone twirling, smashing drums, and guitars, ??? I am a bass player and in later years found myself marvelling at the Ox and saying why do I bother ? But he was the best bassist of all time !@@jwprimetime9795

Michael Marshall man I agree! I’m 44-the first time I saw The Who was in 1995 when they did the Quadrapehenia (I know i spelled it wrong) tour. I took my dad-we were on the left side by the Ox and I couldn’t take my eyes off his playing. And on Pete’s knees-even though I’ve seen this video many times before today was the first day I kept running the knee slam part back over and over-that landing was so violent and he didn’t flinch. But it’s one of the most insane moves I’ve ever see in a live performance. I just bought tics this am to see The Who in Tampa. Two tics cost me $495. My wife is so pissed and not talking to me now bcuz of spending that much and I knew she would be. I just took the yelling and kept telling myself it’s worth it!!! Lol!

It’s human nature to say “ the greatest band” or the “greatest player” or the “ greatest actor” etc etc. The Who are unique among the “Mount Rushmore “ rock bands. They are my favorite band of all. For a million reasons. But the biggest is that - live during 67-75, they were without question the greatest rock group to ever perform. You can’t compare them to Beatles , Stones in terms of mainstream popularity. Or to Zep for their blend of atomic blues with pop integration. The Who were great in the studio with dozens of well known songs and all time great albums. But live they were supernatural. If you listen to anyone with experience and taste in terms of music critique, all are unanimous that The Who were head and shoulders above the others live. No debate.

To say no debate is pure arrogance. The Who was a great live band, and if you force the bottom of the period to 67, you could be right. That said, I don't know if you can testify to this without ever having seen Deep Purple live in the early 70s. They were off the hook good. In 72 I saw the 2nd to last ever concert with Gillian and Glover in Tampa Florida. My mouth hung open for the last 2 hours of the show. They were unbelievable. Give made in Japan a listen sometimes. I think musician for musician, as GREAT as the Who was (and they were great) Purple was even better.

I believe for those of us around in the late 60s - growing up on this music - we're all able to say we saw some of the best of the best bands, ever back when Each contributed to the tapestry of my musical background; I can't take away from any of these bands people have named. To say one was better than another - is to diminish the thing about each we liked. Their unique rock pioneer style (I can't name it - so call it what ever you want )--it's what has made them collectively great of course, but God! I've seen most of these bands --Who, Stones, Deep Purple, Tull, Led Zeppelin----and savor each and every one for their differences. My life was enhanced by all of them!

I was lucky enough to see them twice in 1976. The most vial rock band in rock history, most political, most relevant. Best is relative, but as many have said, the Who mattered, largely because of Pete's song writing.

You can see and hear here how exceptionally talented each musician in The Who was. Bloody brilliant. Around when Hendrix was, and friends with the same. SUPERB!! With the loss of Moon and Entwistle definitely a different sound. Listen to this and weep with joy for the musical beauty, incredible sound, and uniqueness The Who once was. THE BEST.

On their night, The Who are the greatest rock 'n roll band ever. One of the most inventive bands of all time with a truly original rhythm section in both Moon and Entwhistle, a cracking lead singer in Daltrey, and a fabulously anarchic and intense lead guitarist in Townshend. An extremely exciting band to watch as well with many insights to offer about youth and alienation.

The Who was a band with a Lead Bass! Effectively, and it really comes through on this song, Entwistle and Moon were the musicians while Daltrey and Townsend, vocals and rhythm guitar, were the showmen and writers. This curious reversal of guitar roles and some politically astute lyrics from Townsend are what made them stand out from a lot of great bands of the era. (I saw them play at Leeds University in 1971 when the Live at Leeds album was recorded and somewhere amongst all that applause is the sound of my hands!)
@michaelmarshall1713

A very unique band though . The fact that all could play off each other and were never credited for being the gifted people they are /were. I never got Entwistle until later and I am a bass player , but after taking the time , I almost said why do I bother ? he was a master.

Good point. I have purchased new, retail (when copyright owners were getting paid): Kids are Alright Soundtrack LP around 1979 TKAA movie ticket around 1981 at midnight movie (not sure if original studio was still sharing in profits, but at some point they got paid) TKAA VHS around 1981 TKAA DVD around 1990 TKAA Special Edition DVD around 2003 "The Book of Rock Lists" co-written by Jeff Stein's (TKAA director) brother Kevin Stein. (Ok, that one is a stretch. But it's an awesome book. Partly responsible for my obsessive love of all things rock & all things Who.) Don't get me started on Who music and other stuff which is non-TKAA. I've earned it, and I'm sure we all have similar tales.
