Onlookers guide to what's wrong from a mechanic of over 55 years: 1) Car drives thru water, makes it, but tons of steam out the exhaust= wet air filter, probably no engine damage. 2) Car drives thru, stalls, but then restarts and runs with no weird noises= most likely wet ignition parts. 3) Car drives thru, stalls. Engine cranks, but VERY SLOWLY= probably hydrolocked, possibly with no major damage (spark plugs should be pulled, then cranked over). 4) Car drives thru, stalls, then restarts, but when given some throttle, engine CLANKS and stops= water was in the intake system somewhere, got sucked in when you revved it= engine is toast. 5)Car drives thru, engine stalls, won't crank over at all (also head/running lights go very dim while cranking)= engine is TOAST. 6)Car drives thru, engine stalls, gets restarted but with lots of knocking= engine is TOAST. Bent con rods cause the piston skirt to hit the counterweights of the crankshaft, thus causing the knocking. Just the starter motor produces enough torque to bend the rods, so, yeah, it's new engine time! $$$$$

Watching the R32 was sad. To most people it just looks like another old mk4 Golf. But R32's are increasingly rare and have (or had in this case) a very innovative and lovely engine.

Terrible engines. Had the same engine in the Audi TT and it was unreliable garbage. Continuously ate coils which were very hard to access
@tnetroP
@tnetroP Жыл бұрын
@@Rambogner That's peculiar. I had the 2.8 version in a mk4 Golf V6 4Motion and to this day still have an early 2.9 12v version in my 28 year old Corrado VR6 with 160k miles on the clock and they have been bullet proof. I don't know what happened to yours.
@1Dustin
@1Dustin Жыл бұрын
@@tnetroP Huh, how weird that 2 different engines behave differently...
@tnetroP
@tnetroP Жыл бұрын
@@1Dustin The core engine is the same. The Corrado VR6 was the first VW to get the VR6. It should be less reliable, not more reliable than the later versions because lessons learned were used to improve the later 24v versions. The engine in the mk4 Golf 2.8 V6 4motion was almost identical to the supposedly unreliable R32 in the TT mk1, with the exception of a slightly smaller capacity. It was only smaller capacity to differentiate it from the R32 that VW wanted to charge a premium for. It used the same coil packs for example. The issue with the coil packs wasn't a VR6 problem. Many VW engines of the same era suffered that exact same issue including the 1.8 and 2.0 turbo four cylinders. It was a problem with the coil packs and not specific to the VR6 engine. There is indeed a lack of space in the engine bays when work is needed on a VR6. But that's inherent in the requirement to fit a 6 cylinder engine in an engine bay designed for a 4 cylinder engine. The real issue with the VR6 was that it was inefficient and low on power compared to the cheaper and lower emission four cylinder turbos. It also has an issue with chains and tensioner around the 100k mark. The earlier 12v engines also had a tendancy to oval the bore holes over time. But it is generally a reliable and cleverly designed engine, especially in the updated 24v version.

@graealex
@graealex Жыл бұрын
Exactly, you don't see people stopping before it, maybe gauging the depth, and then just going through it slowly. When you see that big bow wave splashing over their bonnet, you immediately know it's over. When in reality, at many times the water wasn't particularly deep. Also: going fast into murky water with zero visibility is in itself very stupid. Like if there are stones or branches inside the water, you'd ruin the bottom of the car either way.

Yep, from what I can guess that as long as you keep the water sloshing below the level of the front grill (the bit above the number plate) you're probably fine. Charging in like an eejit losing body panels to add to the trophy pile beside the ford is only going to do one thing.

so I thought about this and in my opinion the best way of wading the deep sump would be the following: 1) approach the wade and stop right before it; 2) turn of the engine, crank down the front driver's window, so that you can push the car forward by the A-pillar; 3) pop up the hood and plug up the intake nice and tight with plastic bag 4) take off shoes and pants, prepare to push the car through the water; 5) push it through the wade; 6) unplug the intake and go on with you life

Its gonna fire up as soon as you take the air filter out🤣🤣🤣 Bent valves!!! When a hot engine ingests cold water the main problem (aside from hydro-lock) is that the valves warp with the shock of cold water...thats why you see steam outta the exaust. It needs a top end engine rebuild.

Most people don't know how an engine works, if you run it slowly in water there's a good chance the engine won't turn off but if you go fast it's sure the engine will swallow water and the repair cost will be huge.

Eh? The engine hydrolocks if you get water in the air intake. Engine speed is irrelevant.
@jokerash
@jokerash Жыл бұрын
@@kristoffscuba5466 engine speed is relevant dude. When you rev the engine, it sucks air in a vacuum state (negative pressure than 1 atm is the Earth pressure) so , speed of car + waves of water getting faster in the air intake + high revs of engine = more vacuum from intake, lots of water travelling through the intake and into the intake valves. If you don't rev the car and let it drive at idle engine speed with 1mile/hour whatever that speed is through the water you have 70-80% chance not to kill the engine, if water level is below the headlights.
@kristoffscuba5466
@kristoffscuba5466 Жыл бұрын
@@jokerash nah. If the engine is under load and moving the car, combustion is happening. You get into water that’s deeper than the air box then your engine is sucking water in. More revs may mean more vacuum and more water, but even at low revs you are hydrolocking that engine.

You don't get it. It's not a water test for the car, it's a driver's test. They're forcing water to enter the engine intake, thereby ruining the engine by hydrolocking. Very expensive decision.

"It's just wet terminals" he says, drying off the battery with a towel. Tries to start it, clatter clatter...it's terminally wet. I've only ever driven through a couple of very shallow fords (maybe 6 inch deep) so never really thought about the consequences other than getting the brakes wet. I reckon a lot of people just think that the electrics might get swamped, but it's obvious that the motors are just "inhaling" water into the combustion chamber thru' the airbox/airfilter, and of course you can't compress water when the combustion chambers get full and the valves close. I'm not really mechanically minded (OK I can strip and clean a carb on a racing kart but that's about it), but I wonder if modern fuel injected engines are more prone to this sort of thing because of the airfilters and induction system compared with old carburetted motors. I suppose a carb would it just suck in water the same but would it sort of choke up before it filled the motor with water? In any case, this is a salutory lesson...don't charge thru' a ford and don't try and restart the motor once it stops.
