@@3daypriest I am really concerned with what you've said here. I played rugby union at school, and have played occasionally since (I'm in my 40's, a 150lb beanstalk at 6ft), including the odd "seniors" game. Get in touch with me by email at (thomas at londonvisa dot co dot uk). I would like to talk about how to make those club games much safer. it's clearly a problem in either the training, the exercise or the umpiring in my opinion, because whilst rugby games are inherently incident prone with cuts, bruises and you'll normally need to have at least one player "glued back up" (these days) or stitched up, you should almost never see accidents like cracked teeth, concussion rates are normally much lower for rugby than high school gridiron rates, and whilst fractures do (occasionally) happen - these should not be the norm). Please contact me directly. I'd love to discuss with you. Finally, my eldest son (now 22 odd) who probably weighs about the same as me, whilst being the best part of 6'8" was forced to play rugby at school (he was a book worm). The only serious injury he had, playing for 6 years or so at school, was when he tore half his ear early in a game when he was about 16 y/o. he was sent off the field, We went to the emergency room, had it glued back on in the right place (it looked worse than it was) which took about 10 minutes, once the glue had set, they put a compression bandage on it, and he was back on the field for the 2nd half (having put on a scrum cap) and scored a try. (he may well have then been sent off the pitch to the sin-bin for having allegedly performing an "illegal" tackle on the boy who had been the cause of his injury or something like that.. but I'm sure that the tackle was perfectly legal (says his father)...
@inokerogoyawa5 жыл бұрын
They probably had a bad coach teaching them technique if you saw more injuries than football....I grew up playing rugby than transitioned to basketball and came back to play Division 1 men’s club rugby (in the U.S.) and I had easily more injuries on the court than on the field ....Thats probably because I was taught the techniques of tackling, rucking, getting the high balls etc....Probably saved my life too being 6’2 190 lbs on the field and being the skinniest islander on the field 😂😂😂😂

( i have seen dozens of people get serious injuries picking up the ball) . I played club rugby for 9 years (age 11-20) always with the age group above mine because my birthday was a midway through summer .. it was fun/more competitive to play with the older age groups but I got screwed over every year though for the provincial team cause they wouldn't let me be on the team even after I made the team every year, except once when the coach faked my age lol. I also was not that built either 5'8"-6' 2" and 120-165lbs.. in all that time I played full back and winger.... I mostly played full back cause my open field tackling ability.. Not sure about your age but the socials have become quite tame. In the 70s through the 90s, when I played, they were legendary. For a while I pondered over why the change. I finally figured it out. Cellphones. What we did was truly legendary and what is done nowadays can easily be proven as verifiable fact. That kind of puts the brakes to one's imagination.

Mate, we salute you! :) (South Africa forever :) ) Couple more things that is very different 1. 15 a side, with 7 subs (no 54 man team) 2. All players play offence and defence 3. No rolling subs 4. The amount of tackles / sacks a player takes is significantly higher over the course of a game And the biggest difference, which you mentioned - is the ‘no stop when tackle’ and ‘ rucks’ It’s an amazing game!

I can't stop laughing - that was so entertaining, thank you - this Kiwi really enjoyed your intro to Rugby. My American husband also had a rugby experience when he was at Varsity - but he had no idea, he'd come off clean from the sidelines, like yourself got asked to go up the front in the middle of the scrum (and he was one of the smallest!), whistle blew and nek minute he came to being carried off the field. That was his total experience of the game.

Oh Josh, now you are talking about my people. For my American neighbors. The first rule of rugby is that the only person getting tackled is the player with the ball. That means that you are running into thirteen house sized high endurance bodybuilders who really really want to tear you limb from limb and your team cannot defend you. The ball always gets passed backwards. The second rule. No armor. That means no helmets or chest protectors. Shoulder pads are an extra layer of cloth in the shoulders of your rugby shirt. But you do get to wear a cup to avoid having your balls smeared across the field. If you are playing rugby then you are playing full bore for 40 minutes before half time which lasts for 5 minutes then back for the second half. The ball is the shape it is so that it cannot be kicked accurately, it is hard to hang onto because you and it are covered in mud, spit and (sometimes) blood and it's even harder to throw. Rugby is played on grass/snow/mud and is never cancelled because of weather or 'conditions'. You are soaked because of course it's raining and freezing but your adrenalin is going full bore for the entire game. Rugby players are the best. After the game both teams would descend on the closest pub and get wrecked like Vikings, or at least that's what we used to. It is a hard game for real men. Football (all variants other than Australian rules) is a pansy game for delicate little flowers who don't like pain. Rugby is pain. Rugby is life. There is one game that we created that is even harder than Rugby. Field Hockey, which is basically Rugby but with hand held weapons. You have to be crazy to play this game. Ice hockey is nice and safe compared to field hockey. I never played hockey because I'm not mad. Although my dad did play with the London Irish Hurling team for a short while. The dentist bills put him off eventually. Well, that and the concussions. Hurling was invented by my mad Irish cousins because the stinking English wouldn't let them play on their nice manicured Hockey fields. Hurling is aerial hockey played at head level with three foot clubs (sticks) and a ball about the size of a baseball. Apparently they have helmets these days. That's nice.

Haha. Someone has never played American Football. Step on the field even at college level and you won’t be back. When you have gear on you don’t have to pull your hits. That’s why American football players experience about 26 gs of force on impact where as rugby guys experience 6 gs. Obviously the dudes without pads are afraid of getting injured so they don’t hit as hard. Just step on the football field once. You won’t do it twice.
