Hello, sorry for my English, I,m French. As a woman, I'd played rugby, and one of things that we learn in first, il the respect of the referee. Even if the decision seems to be unfair, that's the referee, so, you shut your mouth, and, you go away, And, the referee explains what he do, and that's ok. Thanks for yours videos, that's a great job. Merci et bravo.

Oscar Wilde: "Rugby is a game for barbarians played by gentlemen. Football is a game for gentlemen played by barbarians". Also: "Rugby is a game played by people who are hurt, pretending they're not. Football is a game played by people who are not hurt, pretending they are." Football bores me to tears and makes me angry for both those reasons - it seems players get paid as much for their acting ability as their playing ability. Part of it is culture, part of it is football refs don't have the tools...

Andy Goode, the player you wondered was a professional sportsman, came out of retirement for 3 months as injury cover for Newcastle Falcons. He had actually played professional rugby for 18 years and is the second highest scorer in the Premiership. He also has 17 caps for England.

Andy Goode was always on the chunkier end of the fly-half spectrum. At the end of his career, he joined London Irish, but retired due to injury before he could play for them. That probably would have been it for him; however, some months later, a spate of injuries left Newcastle without a credible 10 to field. Goode, whose injuries had healed somewhat, came out of retirement to sign for them. After so long out of the game, he had, shall we say, a considerably greater 'presence' on the pitch :-)

19:37 This was during a six nations game between Italy and England. Italy, who are known for being the punching bag in the six nations, had devised a strategy to completely counter the normal method of play and give them a chance to beat England who were looking very strong. The strategy was, that by never putting a man into the ruck after a tackle, there is no ruck formed, which meant there was no offside line and the Italian players were free to stand in what looked like completely offside positions and essentially block and passes from the scrum-half clearing the ruck out. England seemed utterly bewildered by it and were repeatedly asking the referee to explain what was going on. To which he basically replied "I can't be your coach, it's up to you to know the rules and realise what's going on". After the competition it was ruled that all tackles would become rucks regardless of if the opposition decides to contest them and thus there would always be an offside line. This was because the Italian strategy was somewhat game-breaking and completely ruined the flow of the game. With no ability to pass the ball England had to resort to just pick-and-go every time (like you see when teams battle for a try 5 meters out) and it made for very boring rugby.

@@RobReacts1 "The referee is the sole judge of fact and of law during a match. The referee must apply the laws of the game fairly in every match." I'm not sure if there is an equivalent for football, but that is a direct quote from the laws of rugby. I play club level and coach youth rugby and this is something I try to drill into the kids at every opportunity. What I do find funny though is that much of the backchat given in these videos would be an immediate penalty at club level. I've seen a yellow card upgraded to red because the player mouthed off to the ref on their way off the pitch. The warning about backchat is often given in the pre-match briefing to each team. It's often a self-governed rule though. Your team mates will tell you to shut the fuck up and drag you away.

I think that one of the reasons rugby refs get the respect from players is that when soccer players were kids they would often play informal games where there was no referee (and goalposts were jumpers) and the decision on whether it was a goal or wide or a penalty was decided by by which ever team intimidated into accepting their point of view. This rewarded players for this behavior giving them a bad habit that many carried over into the senior game, that is they think they can intimidate a ref into a diffferent decision which almost never works. Rugby is never played by kids in this fashion, there is always a ref and any kid who tried intimidating a ref as a kid got marched back 10. Kids learn quickly not to argue especially when your own captain reads you the riot act after the ref has because its now a easy penal;ty to kick not the difficult one the opposition had before you opened your mouth.

This is union. League jerseys usually have a "V". There is also a difference in the fields. Union has a half-line. 10 meters, 22 meters, and the try line. In league, there are 10 meters spaces. 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 meters on either end of the halves.

One of the primary laws of rugby is respect, for your opponent, team mates and ref. This is what make Rugby more disciplined than football. 4 minutes in is I believe Australian Union referee Angus Gardner being schooled by Hurricanes and All Blacks half back TJ Perenara. One of the things that is required to climb the ranks in NZ rugby is smart players, those fully aware of the rules and the intelligence to stay within them or at least work right on the edge of what is acceptable. I don't know if it is the same in football, but as I understand it, at senior levels the captains in rugby have a meeting with the referee in the week leading up to the match. At this time the referee defines what he is looking for from the players during the match, the captains then relay this information to the team. It is then on the players to stay within the laws and they know which areas the officials will be focusing on.

Hi Rob. The reversing decision in Rugby usually occurs when an original offence is penalised but after the penalisable event there us a second offence that also warrants a penalty. Very often ( but not always, referees judgement) this results in a penalty reversal, especially if it involves 'bad behaviour'. The 10 meters penalty is especially significant in Rugby as it us a game where field position matters enormously.

the clip at 20:20 was during an England-Italy game and Italy confused the English players by not committing any players after a tackle had been made, this prevented any rucks from forming and allowed the Italian players to stray "offside" unpunished (one of the strange rugby union laws) It had been done before on odd occasions during games, but Italy were doing it from the beginning of the game and the English players did not know how to deal with it. The best part was when England captain, James Haskell, asked the referee what they could do and he said, "I am a referee, not a coach"

The way Rugby gets this sort of respect is that it is drummed into players since they were about 8 years old. And by the parents and coaches as much as anyone else. Many of whom are former players who want to continue the traditions of the game. Same with respect for opponents. At my son's club from about 8-9 years old, the opposition were clapped off the pitch and then the two teams shared a meal and awarded each other's man of the match and had a pint race (orange squash obviously)..

The one with the schoolmasterly ref doing the exaggerated pointing, this was during the period where the refs weren't mic'd up and there weren't big screens in the stadia, so when something controversial happened, referees had a series of hand movements to designate different offences (you still see these to this day, the motions for holding on and diving in, for example). Where there were discipline offences, however, there weren't specific gestures so a referee might do these exaggerated mime-style gestures so that the crowd understand what is going on.

In AFL, the emphasis is on keeping the play alive and moving. So stopping to talk to players is not a priority if it would penalise the team that would receive the free kick/advantage. Is this also the case in soccer? I think the way rugby is played actually gives it the opportunity to 'prioritise' a good lecture from the ref although that would still not happen in rugby if advantage is paid. There are more opportunities for 'stoppages' in rugby than AFL or soccer.

Normally, as you, good sir, have seen in the rugby game or games that you have watched, after the tackle and release of the ball carrier, the opposing team, which is on the defense, will challenge for the ball. What the Italians did is quite the opposite. Instead of doing that, they were able to set themselves without having to fear for an offside to be called against them. Clearly Haskell didn't know about it and that is why he "confronted" the referee about that.

@Rob - Curious question. You point out regularly through this vid with words along the line of "rugby referees have the power to X and in football you do not". I wonder would you like the power to march a team 10m forward for backchat or unsportsman like behaviour? I have often heard the argument that would not work in football, I do not know why it would not. If it was introduced and refs implemented the law it would work. If the 10m march forward puts you into the box then its a penalty, I do not see how that would not work. Would you like to book players for back chat? I have often heard that the whole team could be booked and sent off for backchat, yes initially that may happen but it would soon stop when matches are abandoned and points awarded to other teams. Just curious on your thoughts.
@RobReacts1
@RobReacts1 3 жыл бұрын
So on the marching 10 yards, its not often a real punishment as football isnt a territory game. Unless it was to create a penalty. We have sin bins for dissent at the lower levels and they are great but they must be brought in at the top!
@colinwilson7524
@colinwilson7524 3 жыл бұрын
@@RobReacts1 but like you said and pointed out it is just a tool to provide punishment for unsportsman like behaviour as well as change the way players interact with refs. It may be a draconian measure to march 10m forward or change a free kick to a penalty but players & teams would soon learn. I agree sin bins work really well in rugby & other sports & football could benefit from them.

So the Welsh don't like him. Bye the way... How is Craig Joubert? Your last name is Scottish by descent, isn't it? I've just checked on Wikepdia and our of the lat 20 encounters between Y Hen Gwlad and Scotland, the Cymru had won 17 while the Scots had squeezed out 3. One against Rob Howey, who was the assistant coach at the time and one against Privac in his first year. Giving you one victory in 18 occasions against an established coach. Considering the Scots had their best performance in ages this year, yet managed to come fourth out of six in the 6N. (Yes, they were paper thin defeats). You must be proud. Sour grapes possibly?

I already see the difference in how we treat the refs differently in both sports(rugby and football). In rugby it’s Sir whilst just ref in football. Also, the way we speak to the referees. In rugby we question whilst we push the referees for decisions in football. So much more respect for the referees in rugby.

There are cautionary tales regarding referees with personality. Bill 'Hollywood' Harrigan was an Australian Rugby League ref who rose to the highest level, was media savvy and was sure he could do no wrong. But he often did and struggled to accept it when he made mistakes, at least during his heights. While he wasn't Leslie Nielsen as an Umpire in The Naked Gun level of theatrics his ego was a bit of a problem, at least to anyone who valued the rules over celebrity status. I certainly think refs need to be able to be themselves on the pitch, but showboating might be a thing to be wary of in some referees. Of course the same thing can be said of many a player, especially in the theatrical world of association football. Showboating aside, the impression I get from these Rugby Ref complications is that the referees are not only confident in themselves as someone who has authority and deserves to be respected, but confident in their governing body. I can't imagine trying to ref a game and make the hard but fair calls that are sometimes needed if you aren't completely sure that the governing body will support you if a player or team spits the dummy afterwards. I'm not suggesting the governing body defends bad calls, but they will defend the referee and his position. Obviously bad calls need to be analysed but that is an internal matter and should have nothing to do with the players or teams.

It HAS to be this way in rugby. The game is so confrontational, it's always just a hair's breadth from breaking down into a mass brawl. When the ref says stop...you stop! I REALLY hate it in football when players crowd the ref and the REF is backing off, trying to get the card out. That and the the melodramatic appeals to ref. Ugh!

@@RobReacts1 Money is the problem. If the top players are being banned for 2-3 weeks for mouthing off at a ref, or a team loses because a free kick is reversed just outside the penalty box, that's a lot of money being lost by powerful people. Because rugby was built with these principles before it became professional, it's not a problem. One solution at professional level football would be to mic up the refs. I can guarantee you that after a few weeks and players have been banned regularly for abusive language (it being broadcast live on tv) it would stop pretty quickly. It's not that the language isn't there in rugby (it definitely is) but the way it's used and directed in football would cause outrage I'm sure. Rugby players have been banned in the past because of racial slurs and disrespect towards the ref being picked up on the mic - I'm thinking specifically Joe Marler (towards Welsh prop Samson Lee) and Kyle Sinckler (towards referee Karl Dixon).
