A pair of former All Blacks have expressed their disappointment of Super Rugby Pacific’s inaugural Super Round event in Melbourne over the weekend. AAMI Park hosted all five of Super Rugby Pacific’s round 10 matches, the first cross-border fixtures of the season between New Zealand and Australian teams, in the first-ever iteration of the Super Round. Those matches were played in front of half-empty crowds, though, as Super Rugby Pacific attracted a reported figure of only 30,000 attendees across three days of matches. #TheBreakdown

I'm South African and in my opinion it's due to inflated ticket prices. Rugby is a growing game in South Africa, but there are bigger crowds at the big schools games than for provincial rugby. People are still passionate about rugby, but they watch the matches on TV to protect their pockets, except when the Springboks play.

That's true, that being said since no south african teams are in super rugby i barely watch or follow that. I might catch the highlights but that's about it. It’s not ticket prices… For context, this was played in Melbourne and the ticket prices were cheaper than both the AFL and NRL. Rugby is just sadly a very very minor and ailing sport in Australia now. Just look at the crowd they got at the same stadium for the NRL ANZAC Day Melbourne Storm v NZ warriors game - that was close to a full house - and on the same day there was an AFL game at the MCG where they have a 100k capacity (which was also full). I loved South African rugby, but you guys just don’t just how much more massive and well funded the NRL and AFL are - both of which are also just much better run sports that enjoy more diverse representation across society - rugby union meanwhile remains focused on a small group of very rich schools. Basically RA’s strategy has been a recipe for decline.

@@DeftPol Yeah, I have to admit that although Australia have won two world cups, never considered them to be a rugby country. League on the other hand, although they have tried, had never been able to establish itself in South Africa. Watched a schoolboy tournament yesterday here in South Africa. The interest and size of the crowds are insane. More and more boys are playing rugby. There is an all boys school in the Boland with only 360 students, but they compete well with the super schools, because 280 of the boys play rugby. White and colored kids have always played the game, but many black kids are now making their presence felt in a big way. South African rugby union is blooming.

You have to focus on building a culture. Do you think Burnley fans fill up turf moor every week because they think their team plays an exciting brand of football and they’re gonna light other teams up? No. They fill that stadium up because it’s tradition, it’s culture, you go and back your team no matter what and you have a good time with your mates and your family because you’re there watching the team you’ve loved as long as you can remember. That’s what they have to focus on. Do away with the friendly nonsense and embrace intense rivalrys. Start constantly promoting the game. What do we have right now that talks about and promotes our game?This show and a couple of podcasts and that’s it. Ridiculous. Push promotion of our games superstars the same way the NRL does. NZR is just so slow to implement such simple things and then wonder why we’re getting left behind by the rest of the world and why nobody is watching super rugby ffs.

Nail on head. Administrators and press in NZ seem to think covered stadiums and fan comfort is the answer, do we think Burnley fans or Green Bay Packer fans give a crap about that in sub zero temperatures? The incompetence is laughable. Just go back and look at crowds and atmospheres from the super 12 days or NPC in 90s in shitty stadiums to see how far the game has fallen off a cliff in this country as far as interest goes. Poor promotion of domestic and grass roots and NZR obsession in turning the all blacks into the Harlem globetrotters of world rugby has slowly eroded our game

In NZ poor turnout is due to overpriced tickets and food/beverages. No one is going to pay next to 100 bucks to see a game, have a few beers and get some food. That in combination with extremely poor marketing and governance means the support for rugby here and across the Tasman is at an all-time low. The game isn't promoted anywhere near as effectively as it could be, the analysis and commentary is PC/bland/boring. It should be intense and critical when players aren't performing while also giving praise when it is earned. The product from front to back is overpriced and underperforming. Nonsense. In Super Rugby Aotearoa 2020 the average crowd from 18 matches was 19,200 (one other game was played with no crowd & a potential final Crusaders v Blues wasn't possible). That comp the Blues played to a sold out Eden Park of 35,000 & had 28,000 at another game. In 2021 the average SR NZ crowds were around 14,000 in a covid ravaged environment. Not bad considering. Also, I've NEVER had to pay anywhere near 100$ to attend a SR game, get a feed & down a cold one?????
@tanieramanaia6186
@tanieramanaia6186 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sunflower-dt6ev link to your sources? Because I don't understand how you can play to a sold out Eden Park of 35k when the capacity is 50k. So please include links to where you're finding these statistics on crowd attendance. I'm telling you right now I was at those Blues games and they weren't anywhere near capacity. Did you watch any of the Super Round? Stadiums weren't even at a quarter capacity and this is off the back of not being able to attend games in person for almost 2 years btw. So 2022 statistics will be generously skewed. Tickets to a game cost 30 bucks for a single adult so unless you like travelling to games alone you're paying close to 80 bucks for two adults and a kid, to get food for everyone will cost around 40, then if you want a drink (9 bucks a pop for a beer) you're looking at another 20. This is without taking into consideration travel costs. Keep your head in the sand mate and the game will soon join you.

Can I ask who your team is/stadium you go to? I pay $15 for my tickets to go to Crusaders games at Orange theory stadium and yes they are the cheap seats but they are super close to the pitch and the atmosphere is always good. I honestly think it is quite cheap entertainment and to pay $15 to go to see one of the best teams in the world is kind if a bargain.

It's a big reason rugby in Aust has been sliding the past 20 years. Ticket prices are too expensive for families. They don't give away tickets to school kids and there's no pre, during, or post match, entertainment. Were there any huge billboards around Melbourne promoting the game? It’s just a correction. Once teams start getting used to it, strategy should change and those teams that are more disciplined and capitalize on player number advantages should see points advantage. While player safety is important, fans want to see rugby not a game where every tackle is a potential card or suspension. Intent has to be a factor in any decision. Red cards should be reserved for intentional foul play like punching, stomping etc... it is impossible in a contact sport to avoid clashes of heads etc... there are to many moving parts. In the avergage game there are over 200 tackles and less than 1% would be considered dangerous. In fact more people are injured making the tackle than those being tackled.

Rugby and the ARU especially need to market themselves. In Brisbane nothing was advertised about the Melbourne round to a household that regularly watches the Reds at Suncorp. As my son said "If I'd known all the games were in Melbourne I would have gone with several mates to watch some of the games". You won't get a crowd if people are not aware that it's on. They need to look at the NRL magic round in Brisbane where many interstate people attend and its advertised. The ARU need to realise that they are a distant no 3 in Australian football codes and having expensive tickets will not increase patronage.

But the attractive rugby that the spectators want to see is not the rugby that can be played if you want a realistic chance of success. Putting this in cricket vernacular, rugby is a 50 over match and people want the bright flashing lights and boundary-a-ball excitement of 20/20. It's the evolution of the game and the "instant gratification" requirement of the fans that have gotten us to this point.

Truth be told, i think you guys miss the Saffas. NZ and Aus rugby water the competition down by replacing the stronger Saffa teams weaker pacific teams. I don’t understand the thinking behind that. Anyways the SA teams doing great up north, 3 SA teams in the top 8 and those teams will join the champions cup next year. Its kinda sad to see this happening to NZ rugby. Just get on with it if you love the game so much. Stop trying to change the rules to suit your style of play. A high tackle is a high tackle, and its dangerous. remove physicality from the game, crowds stop showing so the appropriate response is to clamp down harder on the physicality? in my view we should be looking at Laws that will create space (no shortened lineouts for example or scrums are always set centrefield perhaps) but to remove aggressive defense will only lead to a softer game that I am not interested in.

@eddiebell5181 2 жыл бұрын
I've wrote this on several of the game highlights. The reason people are staying away is because it's BORING. Firstly at least twenty minutes a game is spent watching front rows mess about setting a scrum, often several times for it to be penalised OR the scrum half put the ball in to the second row and the referee ignore it. Secondly there is now one tactic... get a penalty (usually at a scrum) and kick it to touch as close to the line as possible. Then take the line out, the side throwing in rarely loses as there are problems if you contest it... it's legislated against the defending team. Then catch the ball and form a rolling maul... the ball carrier is two rows back and cannot be reached by the defending team without penalty.... often a penalty try. The attacking side can put ten men in the drive...the defending team cannot as they have to defend the fringes against the ball carrier breaking away and going often uncontested to the line. You cannot stop a well organised rolling maul.. bring it down... penalty try... slip up the fringes... at least another penalty.... it's a game of big blokes pushing. One game I commented on had all six tries scored by this method. Think I'm wrong?... then why is no one watching... perhaps they want free flowing exciting rugby. Otherwise it's American Football... pre-set phases. No wonder they think Drua are the best side to watch.... they run and pass the ball. Remember that? Me? I', off to watch some Rugby League!!!!

2 of these commentators, (male) commentators were saying not so long ago that protecting the player's as in giving card's for high tackle's was destroying the game but now they want it? What seems to be the reason behind small crowds in the southern hemisphere is the cost of tickets. I'm Irish and you would never see such small crowds. I know the tickets are expensive here but not as much it seems to be in the southern hemisphere. I was gobsmacked seeing the small crowd at club games, northern V southern hemisphere team's. If they know that people can't afford the tickets then why have them in such big stadiums? It looks terrible and there is no atmosphere so why would you go. If you have to have them in the big stadiums and you know people can't afford the tickets, is it not better to drop the price and get people in the stadium instead of keeping the cost high and have very few at the game. Surely some money is better than none? I am open to being corrected with regards to the cost of tickets in the southern hemisphere.

Have played and watched rugby all my life, became frustrated in recent years due to the rules, rulings and boring repetitive competition. Most of all super rugby is so hard to support. It's too expensive to get the kids along and stadiums are typically boring compared to other countries like South Africa. Super Rugby and Currie Cup was always an awesome "day out" in RSA, great food too. I'm a maori who spent a couple of years in RSA. In 2022 I've become totally addicted to the NRL and watch at least 4 games every round. Easier TV sport, no scrum resets and the NRL as a competition has blown my mind. Haven't watched a game of rugby this year outside of my sons U11s. Super and NZRU have totally disconnected from fans and most importantly children in my view. The food and F & B pricing at the NZ stadiums is an insult as well. The whole experience leaves a bad taste, no pun intended. Will skip super and ABs games this year and save up for an Origin series - 2023... always wanted to go to one... If you want more people to go to stadiums (1) respect the fans and (2) move the season to a better climate window for both players and fans. Quality of rugby is much better when it's played in decent conditions. Rugby NZ does not respect the average fan. Look at some of the NRL clubs and how important the fans are to them, they really value ALL fans and make a sincere effort to connect with them.

Jeff talking about NBA player getting 3k fine for tech foul when that players game check is probably 150k which is a rugby players yearly salary. So easy for him to talk about fining players when it no longer affects him, the fact that JK couldn't understand why a coach wouldn't want the other team to have fast ball is exactly why he's a talking head now and not a coach hahaha

The fans are not coming because it is boring, the game is slow, too many laws, refs involved too much, too much video ref. Take the video ref out of the game unless the skipper calls for it, much like the hockey set sup, no going to the box for tries, it worked for so long and was really enjoyable to discuss in the pub after the game the controversy of the refs calls. Fans want to be on the edge of their seat, they want to be able to argue with each other, analysis the game, they want controversy in the game so they are invested in the teams outcome, having video refs takes that away from the fans.

Wait so let me get this straight. The tackle height being strictly enforced with reds and yellows means we get more offloads and faster ball, while protecting players from concussion and the game from law suits, but defence coaches are telling players to tackle around the chest as a tactic and yet some are complaining about too many reds and yellows ruining a game... all teams want to win but when rules are there to protect players and make it a more enjoyable game then they must be STRICTLY enforced; is this not obvious?
@jestersage8700
@jestersage8700 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is that the reds and yellows are judged by result and don't really take anything else into account and ignore the process. And tbh it's rugby it's supposed to be dangerous. You can reduce unnecessary stuff but past a point it becomes stupid. Rugby players are just gonna have to accept the inherent risk. Otherwise everything will be illegal
@ajjs8869

@@jestersage8700 they’re judged by impact/contact to the head or neck. Dangerous game indeed, but when you have a number of ex players bringing lawsuits against World Rugby, there may not be a professional game left in 10 years. Important IRB shows it started doing all it could as soon as it knew the full story on concussions link to amnesia. Plus as I said you get more offloads and a faster game, what’s not to like!
@theofarmmanager267
@theofarmmanager267 2 жыл бұрын
I played amateur club rugby in the UK for many years; naturally, lots of injuries including 2 x broken leg, broken shoulder, broken ankle, broken vertebrae plus more concussions than I could count. It was dangerous in the sense of people doing things (eg tackler and the tackled) badly plus occasional violence. You can’t make rugby injury-free; you can remove the things that are most likely to cause injuries - I played in the era when front rows used to engage by crashing into each other; where, if you got caught on the wrong side of the ruck, you got a kicking. I would suggest that the Laws we now have around safety are good (but will evolve) it’s just that players aren’t adapting. You can coach all you want but, if a player has been doing seat belt tackles since he was 8, in the heat of the game, the player just reverts. There are many great things about RU in the UK. The respect for the officials; the friendliness of the crowds; the use of the TMO; the balance of ball retention and jackeling. What’s wrong with it? The end product on the field is not competitive outside of the UK - take Ireland and France at club and national levels. Why is that? I don’t honestly know. Salary cap? Substandard coaching? with the size of the English player base, The pyramid of progression to the national side should be consistent; but we see many players at U20 level just not making that leap into full club or national level.

I like watching a bit of rugby in TV in Sydney. Problem is here (not sure about NZ) is that it’s only on pay TV, so I can only grabs minutes of highlights on KZfaq (I’m not obsessed enough to pay whatever it is for something I might watch once a week). So I can’t really get a feel of the whole contest and who’s doing well or not (and be motivated enough to see if there’s a game I might want to pay to see). The other problem is I can’t understand the obsession with yellow and red carding players if the tackle is even slightly high (with no intent) and if a player drops an intercept it’s also a yellow card for knocking it down. Listening to this discussion it feels like they’re talking about people (who might attend) who have different motivations than me.

You have all the high tech cameras that shows the game at better angles (compared to watching in the stadium) with commentators giving good insights (most of the time) ... If i do go to the stadium to watch, its more for social gathering I guess.. cos i will bum into my rugby friends and start drinking till i don't really watch and enjoy the game. It's just like F1 nowadays... better to watch on TV (for me)... than to be at the stand where you can probably only watch one part of the F1 rather than the whole picture..? Unless you wana go there for the atmosphere to listen to the sound of the passing racing car....

That was a very messy breakdown of a few different subjects. Crowds was the first point. Why on earth would you hold a rugby union "Super Round" in the home of AFL? Yes there is accommodation, yes the city is a great spot to visit, but you are competing against an AFL mad nation. To get an atmosphere you would surely have something like this under the roof in Dunedin, treat it like a 7s weekend? Second point I think was around discipline. 3 points vs 7, its easy to see what the team would prefer. How do you stop that? That would take another whole segment to answer/debate that, but perhaps a teams yellow card count can affect their bonus point system? Teams with a yelllow card are unable to score a bonus point? Third point was about the players looking out for one an other. I think you would find 99.9% of players don't want to hurt someone intentionally. The clearing of the ruck is the most dangerous place on the park, and it also affects the speed of the game, that would be a good starting point.
