Some range time with a 1974 Ruger M77 in 30-06. We use surplus HXP Greek ammo and some hunting rounds in 150, 165 and 180 grain. Scope used is a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 with stock Ruger rings.

I bought my first M77 in .270 in 1975. Shoots less than 1/2" groups consistently. I have one in .22-250 and one in .243 and all shoot awesome groups. Great rifle!

I bought an M77 in 7X57 in 1974 when I was 14. It has served me well over the decades.

Nice shooting! I bought my M77 30-06 new in ‘81. It is the last rifle that I have ever got. It has worked well all these years on everything I have shot at. I just shoot 180 grain hand loads at a little over 2700 fps for everything.

Thanks, these are great rifles.

FWIW, the ideal to ensure that you will hit an 8" vital zone (the size for a typical deer and a bit smaller than the size for an elk) with a 165 grain Barnes TTSX moving along at 2754 fps is 3.4" high @ 100 yards. That will enable you to hit the vital zone from right up close and personal all the way out to 330 yards with no holdover or holdunder, all depending on the height of your scope, of course. I don't know the ballistic coefficient, muzzle velocity, and scope height for your Ruger, but you really out to get real numbers for all of those and you can enter them into a ballistics program (there are many free ones out there as well) to find your optimal zero for the load that you choose for your elk. I just know that I love my own M77 .30-06 that I bought brand new clear back in 1989 when I was still in the navy. It has gotten me three deer, each with one shot, and it will bring me more over the next few years.

Not bad shooting for that old Ruger 👍🙂

Gorgeous rifle, I can see why you want to use it a lot. My go-to is my Savage 110L in 30-06 and I feel the same about it. There are those who talk down the Rem Core-Lokt ammo but my classic 110L has been liking the 150 & 180 grain SPs for decades now so why change? Have used it for everything from coyotes to whitetails and bear. Topped with a Leupold 3-9x40 and also does it all for me. Happy hunting.

Thank you, lots of folks will hop on the newest fad but the 30-06 is still a great all rounder.

I hear you on that, brother. I actually have the measurement for the max length that will feed reliably in the magazine of my own tang safety M77 .30-06. That length is 3.323" and that bullet just so happens to be the 165 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, the only one of the dozen different bullets that I have used to make reloads for which I had to be seated deeper than the 0.010" from the lands that I would normally have used for seating depth with that particular bullet because of the magazine box length. I would have seated that bullet at 3.374" but for the magazine box length. I don't have the group size for those Ballistic Tips seated for magazine box length, but the ones seated out at 3.374" (I single-fed these) would cluster five inside 1.189" @ 100 yards. I always hunt with the 165 grain Barnes TTSX, though. Those little jewels will cluster five just inside 1" @ 100 yards, not too shabby for an off-the-shelf hunting .30-06 if I do say so myself. ;)

Just picked up an early 90s tang safety m77 in 7mm rem mag. Installed a rifle basix sear that brought the trigger pull way down. Had to increase trigger weight quite a bit to feel safe. 😂 She's a shooter though. Time to handload.

I know this is old but just wanted to point out that it appears that the impact spread is more lateral than vertical meaning that the wind is responsible for the group not being smaller. My M77 will shoot 1" groups with most loads any day except windy days. I think your rifle is better than what that range day showed to be.

Outstanding !! Love the older M77 with the tang safety. I found it strange that the 180s shot POI the same as the 150s and 165s. Don't see that every day. Could be that since they are such an old round, the charge may have lost some of its power. You have a half MOA rifle with a better rest and sling removal before shooting.

I was expecting to have to talk about how different grain bullets would impact differently but in this case they were all the same. Not sure why but next time I'm going to use the chrono and figure out speeds.

@@CRCollector 10 yrs ago, I owned a 1958 pre64 Win Mod 70 and I was shooting some very very old Winchester 130gr Silvertips (not to be confused with what is called Ballistic Silvertips nowadays). This ammo was from the the 60s (quite possibly the 50s). This rifle loved 'em. That old rifle would easily shoot 1/2 MOA with the 4.5-14x Pentax scope I had on it. But, on another trip to the range, after a couple of shots, I noticed POI was way low. The guy next to me said my rifle didn't sound right. I was very fortunate I didn't lodge a bullet in the barrel.

Quick question…What scope rings are you using (brand & size)?? Also, what’s the size of your objective lens? It looks like a 44 mm. I just recently purchased a Ruger M77 and I need a couple tips in terms of the set up. Thanks!
@CRCollector Жыл бұрын
They are the stock rings that came with it. The scope is a 40mm.
