I take out the trusty Ruger M77 rifles today. I'm sighting in the 300 Win. Mag with 165 grain Barnes Triple Shock and the 30-06 with 200 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws for the upcoming spring bear season.

May I make a suggestion, to get the best mechanical accuracy from your rifle, you need to slide that front bag back under the stock. This is so nothing is in contact with the barrel, because it messes with the natural harmonics of the barrel when the rifle is fired. If not, due to recoil and you adjusting yourself the barrel is contacted by the bag in a different spot every shot and this can greatly affect your accuracy.

It's too bad ammo is so messed up these days. I used to burn through about 40 to 60 rounds for practice and zero confirmation pre hunting season. I did my 100 yard zero and confirmed at 200 yards. Wanted my .270 or .30-06 dead on at 200. That covers about anything the deer will ever throw at you. Usually they show up so close that your scope better be cranked down to the low setting.

Haha ya. I usually sight my rifles in 1 inch high at 100 yards then shoot three more for a group to confirm but with the ammo problems this year I'm going with "close enough."

Thank you for the thought, and effort that you put into developing and producing this video. The M - 77 is an outstanding rifle. In either 3006 or 300 Winchester magnum, it is very much capable of killing anything in North America. Either caliber will settle the hash of any big game animals. Short of grizzlies. Properly loaded either will handle grizzlies. They are not bulletproof. With extreme respect, suggest you find a very much more solid, shooting bench, and a very much more stable target frame. Also, establish your rifles basics zero using something less than half dollar premium grade hunting ammunition. Hand loading would certainly allow you to use less expensive ammunition for basic zero and target work. Wish you air pretty good luck and success in the upcoming bear season. Will look forward to your future videos.

Wish I could sit a bear stand up there. I know there has to be a 300 pounder just waiting for me in the great white north. I would love to put the smack down on a big one with my .270.

So what you are saying is that a .30-06 is a good little old ladies 🐻 rifle? 😁 I have a box of 200 grain Speer Hot Cores. Some day we will load them. I bet those 165s in that .300 will take anything in Canada too.
@BuickOutdoors
@BuickOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha I'm not ashamed to pack a old ladies rifle lol The 165's flattened my bear this year. I used to shoot 100 grain triple shock out of my 257 Weatherby and that thing worked great on moose, elk, bear and deer. Didn't have to change ammo and it was deadly accurate.
@johnnorman7708
@johnnorman7708 2 жыл бұрын
@@BuickOutdoors .257 Weatherby is a wicked hot rod. Too much of a good thing for me. I would be more of a .25-06 sort of guy with 117 or 120 grain bullets in that caliber. Personally I like hitting stuff with heavier bullets even if it's walking speeds compared to that Weatherby. I would be right at home with your Grandma's Ruger 77 throwing those 200 grain pills for a bear or moose rifle if I were to come for a visit and bear hunt.😃 Keep those great videos coming. And congratulations on a real decent bear.

I totally understand not wanting to burn through bullets like these, as they just started coming back down under $2 a round where I shop. What's the best way to zero in a scope with a drop-compensator that goes out to 450 yards? Should I set it at 100 yards first, then adjust for 200 yards and zero it in again..or does it make any difference?
@BuickOutdoors
@BuickOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Typically speaking you zero it for 100 yards. Out to 300 yards I really don't think it'll make much of a difference depending on what caliber you're shooting, but once as you start reaching out to 400 yards and beyond you have to get very accurate on your calculations. There's so many variables that go into long range shooting that even one inch off at 100 yards could be off by feet down range.
@Nobluffbuff
@Nobluffbuff Жыл бұрын
@@BuickOutdoors Understood. One more thing I might be missing. Should I zero at 100 with comp set to 100, or is it best to not use the drop compensator while I zero the rifle?
@BuickOutdoors
@BuickOutdoors Жыл бұрын
@@Nobluffbuff if it's a turn dial I would zero it for 100 then there should be a set screw that you can loosen off and put the dial to 100 once as your done zeroing your rifle then tighten down the set screw.

Just got to wondering about it. What is an average weight on mature bears in your area in the fall when they are fatted up real good?
@BuickOutdoors
@BuickOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
I would say around 200 pounds or so. We get bears that are MUCH bigger but on average it would be safe to say about that 200 pound range.
@johnnorman7708
@johnnorman7708 2 жыл бұрын
@@BuickOutdoors I kind of figured that a 300 pounder would be a bit on the big side. About the same in the southern rocky mountains as well. I always thought bears as a much denser target than deer, but 200 pounds still doesn't exactly demand a huge rifle to deal with. No wonder the old timers took them regularly with .30-30 and never thought much about it.

@@BuickOutdoors Don't know what you have for .30-30 ammo, but the 170s of various brands and types were always the "bear" loads. The standard CoreLokt and the CoreLokt hollow point are classic old school stuff. The HP was actually engineered tougher than the soft point for deeper penetration with expansion at short range hunting distances. That load has been scarce down here in the states for a long time, you only found it occasionally. But if you need an old school bullet for hogs or bear in your .30-30 it may be one to try if you can find some.
