Shooting the Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 243. This is a fine deer rifle that serves us well.

I’m in both camps. Love the m70 and m77!

The Ruger M77 Hawkeye incorporates Ruger's Hawkeye design elements, including a Mauser-type controlled feeding extractor and a fixed-blade-type ejector for reliable and controlled cartridge feeding and ejection.

The 6mm was first known as the 244 Rem mag. It fell behind the .243 Win because of slow twist and couldn't stabilize 100 grain bullets. By the time Remington went with a faster twist barrel the .243 had already become established as a dual purpose cartridge. The .244 was renamed the 6mm Remington (no change to the cartridge) so customers would think it was a new cartridge offering. The 6mm does have a slight performance advantage over the .243 but it never became a viable commercial contender to the .243. That said my dad's only custom gun he had built was a 6mm (back in '71-72) and it was a thrill when he'd take me along to the gunsmith's shop to see the project's progression.

People are really weird. I’ve never called them anything since I’ve been shooting except Leopold. 😂 Nice review. Good to see the younguns shooting as well 👍

I have the same rifle in the original 77 MK/II stainless/laminated finish. It is a deer killing machine and it is fantastic out of blinds and tree stands. It is a joy to hunt with. The 243 is underrated. The Ruger is better in every way over the Remington 700!

The 243 is definitely an underrated cartridge. I loved hunting with my Remington model 7, but I’m also not a bit disappointed I went with Ruger.

Mine shoots Barnes 80 TTSX (2865 FPS) and Nosler 95 Ballistic Tip handloads the best.

If you can find the Winchester 80grain white box, they have less recoil for James, usually group well in most guns, and they will kill Whitetail like Thors hammer out too 150 yards or so.

Pardner I've been a Balastician for over 50+years. If I heard you right you said something about being able to chamber 6mm Rem cartridges in your 243. That is complete Hogwash and extremely dangerous. They are two completely different cartridges. One is substantially longer than the other and the Headspace is completely different.Just the very fact that you would try to chamber a loaded 6mm Cartridge to see if the bolt would close was very very dangerous and grossly irresponsible of you. Stunts like that get people killed. If you had been able to close the bolt I guantee you that Rifle would blow up in your face if you tried to shoot it. Some people should never be allowed near a Gun.

Dont know about this. But a neat one is 30-30 out of a 303. Not saying to try it, but I have from a safe distance as a native fella told me it would work. Gosh darned if it did in fact work.
