Ruger Super Redhawk Review and Range Time

Today I shoot the hand cannon known as the Ruger Super Redhawk. Join me as we see how hard 454 Casull hits steel versus 45 Long Colt. Then we wait for my cease and desist letter from Lucasfilm as I take some slow motion footage comparing the recoil from the 454 Casull and the 45LC.

Nice vid, thanks for sharing! Yerah that's a 9.5" barrel. Looks like an enjoyable shooter with the 45 Colt, the 454 Casull, not so much.....grin

Need to update that in the description. I should have known it was longer than 7.5 but I was going off the Ruger spec sheet from their website. Maybe this one was a limited run?

There used to be a few Super Redhawk models with the 9.5" barrel, I don't know about current catalog items. My brother had a 9.5" in 44 Mag. @@texmexshoots

Thanks my friend! It’s fun for a few rounds. Just a few. Buddy of mine inherited a magnum research single action revolver in 30-30. I’m trying to get him to bring it back next time he heads out to the property with me. Need to get some video footage of it.

Great to see you. 454 is a beast. There are a couple of companies that make lever actions in 454 Casull. That would be a great combination in bear country. Yes, the Hogue grip makes a huge difference. Stay hydrated out there

Thanks my friend! It's been miserable. Luckily we are at the end of the dog days. Lets hope we all get some rain soon. I could see it being a great lever action round. I'm curious how it compares to a 45-70 out of a carbine length barrel.

I have the same gun in 7.5" barrel. I'm 70 and firing off 6 rounds of full power .454 is about all I can tolerate. My hand will be sore for a day or two. You can shoot .45 ACP in this gun but you have to have the cylinder modified to accept moon clips. Perhaps that is what you FIL was talking about?

Thanks for watching Gone Rydin! Yeah, she can be a beast with those full power .454 loads. I'd like to think that is what my FIL was thinking about, but the truth is that I've had to explain to him a few times in the past the difference between 45acp and 45colt. 😁 He is old school and never had a pistol in 45acp until I gave him one. Buy your father-in-law the Houge Tamer grips as a present. You might be inheriting this beast. It looked like it is an accurate gun, at least with the lesser cartridges. Would you take it hunting? Loved the Star Wars parody!

Thanks as always Frank. My father is built like a bear so the pistol doesn’t bother him much. However the Houge grips would give bigger hands more to hold. So you may be on to something there!

You may want to remove your watch when you shoot it can damage your watch especially the illumination digital watches definitely can break from the shockwave

You can also shoot .45 Schofield in that revolver. Also there is no cartridge named .45 long colt. It's just .45 colt. Just sayin'…

I know Mike, but if you recall the part of my video where my F.I.L. was having difficulty distinguishing between 45 Automatic Colt Pistol and 45 Colt, it's just easier to call it Long Colt and 45 ACP. Plus lets be fair, the term "45 Long Colt" although technically incorrect (the best type of incorrect 😁) it is also a term in common usage.

@@texmexshoots yes, that common usage thing does get in the way sometimes. Take for example…the .45 auto cartridge. It is not the .45 acp cartridge. Acp stands for Automatic Colt Pistol, which is the name of the firearm, not the ammunition. The original John Browning patent refers to the .45 auto cartridge, not the .45 acp. Anyway….I wasn't trying to be a wise guy, and I did enjoy the video…have a good one, sir.

the last thing you want to do, is try to control the 454 recoil, just go with it. give the buffalo bore a try

Are you sure? I'll have to measure it next time I visit my FIL. I got the length off the Ruger spec sheet and didn't actually measure it myself for the video.
