I did the same thing for about the same price on the Mag cylinder. A .22 LR is pressured to fire in both handguns and rifles, while the .22 Magnum was a rifle-only development. The chrony says there's not much difference between LR and Mag using handgun barrels. Decades ago a friend and I used a variety of .22 firearms to find the barrel length that gave the highest velocity. It was an 18" barrel shot from an M1 carbine lookalike.

Have literally fired thousands of rounds through my Heritage Rough Rider with not a single problem. Ever. I don’t understand the negativity regarding the Rough Rider’s safety. I find it a useful feature. It was the first handgun that my kids learned to shoot with, and being familiar with the use of a safety made them extend that habit to other guns later on. Plus, I have introduced new shooters to the sport with the Rough Rider, and a safety is a good thing to have for them.

After watching your video 2 months ago, I bought one of each. The Heritage was $169. With a 22lr and 22mag cylinder. The Wrangler was $179 with 22lr only. Let me say that the Heritage was much smoother out of the box. The Wrangler loading gate is small and hard to open. After cleaning the Wrangler and putting oil on it, it smoothed out and shot well. But the Heritage is much smoother still. But I enjoy the heck out of both of them. So I shoot 22mags in the Heritage and 22lr in the Wrangler. Lots of fun!!

I have the same two guns. The difference between the LR and Mag is considerable in rifles, but according to my chronograph the Magnum advantage really shrinks with pistol barrels. I think the .22 Mag was specifically designed as a rifle cartridge and really loses it's oomph when fired in a pistol. But, it's nice to have the dual option. :)

I'm getting the heritage because it functions mechanically more like the real colts and similar revolvers. In terms of the safety i will not use it and load five because i want the big bore stuff in 45 colt, 357 etc so it's just good practice. And you don't get into the habit of trying to remember to remove a safety. Just use it how they did.

I also own both these pistols. The Ruger: I have had no trouble with this gun. I have carried it quite a bit, I love this gun. The heritage: the only problem I have run into is (I actually own 2 of these) I had a small internal part to break. No problem getting a replacement but it didn't work as well, causing issues with cocking the hammer. (The part causes cylinder to rotate as you pull hammer back.) I tried it in my newest pistol and it worked but not well, nor would the one from newest gun work at all. This can only mean that the tolerances are not uniform in each heritage pistol. I'm going to contact heritage and see what they say.

Just so you know - and you may already know - Heritage is now owned by Taurus. Taurus bought the company in 2012. My old 7.5 incher was from before the buyout. Had to replace it (got stolen) after the buyout - even came with some Taurus paperwork, iirc. Can't really tell much difference in how they are made, etc. but wonder if there are differences in customer service. I always heard that Heritage customer service was great before the buyout and have heard that Taurus' customer service in general might leave a little to be desired. Hasn't made much difference, to me to this point as I have owned a few Taurus branded handguns as well as a couple of Rossi handguns (also owned by Taurus) and haven't needed to contact customer service for any of them, so far.

Considering I've found these as low as 89 bucks online I've been really tempted. But now that I've found the wrangler, I'm torn between the two (I've seen them for about 150 on sale already). I feel more comfortable with an aluminum frame vs zinc idk why and of course the Ruger name is a plus. However, there's something appealing about a neat/cheap little firearm that I could afford with the cash in my wallet just about every day of the week (I'm a broke 20-something with other priorities lol).

When I was deciding which one to buy you have to say to yourself first they are just 22 plinkers, not the best materials used by either company but that is reflected on the price. Second the safety on the RR is ugly but it is what it is and has come in handy loading and decocking for my friends on shooting for the first time. Third the fluted cylinder is a bit more authentic and the loading "click" from the RR made it more desirable to me. Something about the click when loading is like a symphony to me.

I've had a Rough Rider for a very long time. I've had two issues with it over the years... mind you, I've put untold thousands of rounds through it over around two decades or so. I had to replace the firing pin because the tip was starting to mushroom. It used to be a fairly common problem, but I think they've made the newer pins a little harder to eliminate the problem. Second, the barrel is glued in, and came loose. It was easily taken care of with threadlock. You just need to make sure that the barrel is adjusted so the sights are aligned as it sets.

I don't understand all the hate on the rough rider safety. A lot of people use these to teach kids and family members to shoot. A safety is definitely recommended for such purpose. And if you don't want a safety, don't use the safety. It's just a cheap gun, with a good purpose.

I've got a 6 shot Heritage Rough Rider with the 6.5 inch barrel I got at Dunhams on Black Friday a few years back for $99. I bought the 22 magnum cylinder for it later. It works flawlessly, absolutely zero problems. The cylinder rotates smoothly, it's got a decent trigger, and I like the heft of the longer steel barrel. Shoots both .22LR and .22WMR without any problems, and is plenty accurate with both. I bought a custom leather holster for it on eBay, and all I need now is a belt that has .22 sized loops on it. The Ruger Wrangler was not out yet when I bought mine, but I still would have bought the Rough Rider. Even though, I have and do own several Ruger products, and actually love Ruger as a company, the Wrangler has only 2 things that I wish my Rough Rider had: No safety, and the Ruger logo. I have never shot the Wrangler, and I certainly wouldn't fault anybody for buying it. But I personally don't like the Cerakote finish on them, and also, while opening the loading gate unlocks the cylinder is a cool safety feature, I actually prefer the "old fashion" way to load and unload. I have a feeling the Ruger wouldn't feel heavy enough, even though Hickok mentioned they weight almost the same. Bottom line, I am too poor to buy a firearm that only serves one function, I need the guys I buy to either be able to be used in multiple applications, or be able to fire multiple calibers. And, while I hate the stupid safety on the Rough Rider, I'd still take it with the ability to swap cylinders and shoot the more potent .22 mag than have the Ruger. I am glad Ruger is making a more affordable .22 single action. If the Heritage Rough Rider didn't exist, I'd definitely buy the Ruger instead of one of the .22 SAA clones. Great video!

I bought a used Rough Rider for $100 about 3 years ago. I have shot that gun every time I go to the range, and I go often. I would imagine I have fired thousands of rounds through it. It is a LOT of fun to shoot. Recently I started having misfires. The gunsmith indicated that there is too much movement with the cylinder now, and he put a shim in. I have not gotten it back yet, but even if it needs the shim to shoot, I will still love it.

@edcrobert T both the rough rider and wrangler have plastic finger tabs to actuate the ejector rod, the triggers are metal, the ruger has plastic grip plates, making it the winner in the plastic department,.. The ruger also comes with instructions misinforming the owner about dry firing.. It says you can..but don't.. It causes immediate damage..not so with the rough rider The ruger loading gate is VERY stiff, making it very difficult to use, it feels front heavy, and slow when manipulating the action, i own two wrangler's, and love how they look, I've purchased ten rough riders over the years, gifting four of them, and keeping six for each member of my family.. I love how they look, and more importantly, I love how it functions, The rough rider is the better purchase in my opinion. As an aside, I'm not bashing ruger, the vaquero is tied for number one as my all time favorite firearm of any action type..period.. They just missed the mark with the wrangler, the rough rider is way more fun to shoot and manipulate, the wrangler is a pain in the ass for children AND adults.

@Jay Caldwell Jay ...do you own a wrangler...? I wouldn't normally argue with someone with the last name Caldwell about firearms... re: (lead sled) ...but my wrangler was rendered useless the day it was removed from the box due to dry firing.. Ruger themselves admitted to me on the telephone that their owners manual is wrong in its current state of manufacture, (it says dry firing is ok) and have had to mail out countless replacements already. my particular problem is the same as everyone else's... Peening on the cylinder immediately adjacent to the cartridge rim... It won't allow the loading and unloading of a cartridge. This is well known and established, and frankly my opinion of this particular single action has only become more soured the longer I've owned it .. Compared to even the heritage rough rider...The wranglers action is very heavy and slow..(don't even get me started on the loading gate)... I'm not a "proud owner" as far as this purchase was concerned.

I like the Heritage for plinking. It does occasionally lock up and you have to take the cylinder out to reset the trigger and hammer. It only happened to me once but once is enough for me not to consider it a home defense weapon or an EDC. I've seen others say they have experienced the same lock up and I've seen other say they've fired thousand of rounds over a decade and not have a single issue. Could be machining, could be not committing to all 4 clicks when you pull back the hammer. I like cowboy movies but I had to upgrade to Double Action from another brand.

Just got my rough rider a few months ago after seeing videos like this. Ive shot 1k rounds and no issues, other than the grip screw coming loose. There is however a issue ive had and it isnt super common but ive seen people talk about it. It can seize up from heat messing with the bullet casing. Some people swap brands others swap the cylinders out while out shooting. Personally my finish is wore also, but i got it for $145 and it had never been shot. It was an overstock gun that had a sale and clearly sat on a shelf for an extremely long time. Ive seen people get them for $99 though. Its a great starter gun and any problems that can happen has happened and been posted on the internet, so you can easily learn to maintain and repair them.

Bought my 6-1/2" Rough Rider brand new for $107 about two years ago (early 2019) from Bud's site. Still only has about 450-500 rounds on it, but it is a hoot! Just make sure you keep the area where the rim of the cartridge seats in the cylinder clean and dry (no lube there where dirt will stick). It takes very little fouling on that little shoulder/step before the cartridge sticks out the back of the cylinder a tiny bit and interacts with the frame, which locks the gun up quite nicely. If yours seems to randomly lock up tight, here's the quick fix: pull the base pin and gently wiggle the cylinder out. Now clean the gunk off the back of the cylinder and use a solvent of some kind to remove any residue. Gun will now run flawlessly. I locked it up twice before realizing what was happening. Aside from that, the gun eats all the hollow-points my auto-loaders find indigestible and jam up on (although it turns out a bullet with a smashed nose isn't so accurate). Without a doubt, the most reliable .22lr I've got. It'll also eat the 'duds' that my auto-loaders can't fire/restrike (much head-scratching ensues). I've had one of those 'duds' with a Ruger Charger, and two with a Savage 64F. The humble wheelgun doesn't seem to know what a dud is! Now I need the 9" Hunter model with the adjustable target sights: the basic trough rear sight is garbage, though I'll admit it does shoot to point of aim with a 6 o'clock hold.

I picked up a used rough rider when I was a new shooter, and it was a good looking little gun. I was not able to shoot it accurately at all, but that may have been because of my experience level. Eventually, it would light strike regularly with .22lr, which i learned was probably due to cushioning. Cleaning the cylinder meticulously helped. My young preteen brother got a new rough rider for Christmas last year. When we took it out shooting, he was getting hit with a little lead shrapnel. He was fine, but I realized you have to slam the hammer back, if you gently pull it until the final click, the cylinder is not aligned with the barrel and it will fire. Something to check if you are thinking about buying one.
