The Tommy, Dill scene from The Rugrats Movie was heartbreaking. "Remember how there was a time when you didn't have all the answers? So maybe, when you get upset at someone, don't try to get a bunch of monkeys to commit murder for you."

I kinda wish you had delved a bit more into Angelica's complexity, because she does on occasion stand up for the babies. There's the one episode when an older boy "befriends" the babies, then begins to abuse them to the point of threatening to jump on them from a swing. Angelica steps in with her water balloon catapult, and chases the boy off, protecting the babies. And then there's the second movie where she has an entire arc of betrayal and redemption, and getting the last word on Coco by ripping her wedding dress, exposing her underpants.

One subtle but interesting arc I saw in the earlier seasons was Chuckie slowly getting tired of Tommy's selfishness towards him, dragging him into schemes and shrugging off his fears, leading to occasions he finally snapped at Tommy and their friendship was on the line. Since Tommy is relatively less inconsiderate and MUCH more protective of Chuckie afterwards this actually makes a decent build up to Dil coming and Tommy becoming a more caring brother figure.

5:44 "The show is like one giant well meaning web of miscommunication." I think this something that always adds appeal to this show. They could have easily just had a one note formula where the babies act like destructive nuisances and the parents just act comically neglectful like say later Nick shows like Fairly Odd Parents, but the secret sauce is these two herds of characters trying to 'get' one another and do what's best for them in spite of this crippling language barrier.

As the eldest sibling, I felt like the Rugrats Movie was written specifically at me. I cried so much at that scene where Tommy is about to pour the bananas on Dil. I once got so angry at my baby sister, I tried to flush her down the toilet.

I liked what you said about Angelica’s nastiness being important. I really dislike it when adults act like girl characters should only be “good role models” instead of interesting characters that have flaws. Stories need female villains! (Also, I’m curious if you have any thoughts on All Grown Up?)

Any not only that, most of these criticism openly ignore that the shows themselves do not make it ambiguous that these characters are meant to be the bad guys or at least not be looked up to. Like Maggie said, Angelia DOES get punished a lot of the times, and even when she's not, the show makes it clear that it has negative consequences. It reminds me of when people say that South Park doesn't make it clear enough that Cartman is supposed to be evil when a). yes the do and b). he's a spoiled eight year old repeating terrible things he hears adults say, so he can't be anything BUT a sociopath. Or even Johnny Bravo, to a certain extent: the show makes it perfectly clear that he's an idiot and a chauvinist, and the kids are smart enough to know to laugh AT him, not WITH him.

Yeah this is something even many adult shows struggle to get a grip on, a female character that is not only an antagonist but a charismatic antagonist. Sure we have shows that convey women as cliche bitchy but they're always a second banana to a more integral male foil and usually their nastiness has no consequences besides quick gags (Lois is FAR more dull and undeveloped than Brian or Peter in Family Guy for example despite arguably being just as repugnant a human being). Angelica meanwhile stole the show as things went along, being a jerk, even a villain, but a pitiful, humorous and sometimes even identifiable one (we all get jealous or obsessed with attention sometimes). I'm kinda glad they didn't go with the original idea of her just being this force of evil that always gets away with it to show life is unfair. Yeah it's a meaningful lesson at times, but too many shows shove that in your face endlessly rather than moderately, ruining the whole broth with their insistently one-note cynicism.

I read criticism that "Girl Boss" wasn't feminist because she's, well, a terrible person. To which I say, women can be terrible people and stories about them can be very entertaining. And making all female characters good role models is extremely limiting and puts a lot of unhealthy pressure on girls and women to be perfect. All. The. Time. (Especially when in the majority of shows that perfect woman finally cracks in a very unhealthy way).

Rugrats is one of those shows that will always be remembered for a very long time. I love the insane world you discover if you string all the adult subplots together and look at all the stuff in the backgrounds going on.

Such a great show, and wonderful analysis. I love that the show offers even physical perspectives of what it is to be a baby, everything is big, sometimes scary or sometimes wondrous from down where the babies exist. This video nails the emotional aspect of the writing too and was super enjoyable to watch, thanks Maggie.

Thank you for putting this so clearly into a complete, concise video. I explained to my children how much Rugrats helped me parent. I always try to talk for their babies, imagining things from the babies' perspective, which my girls say helps them parent more empathetically and patiently. Rugrats taught me that.

Rugrats in Paris hit me the most. I had just lost a parent the year before. Chuckie's experience of not being able to dance with his mom like everyone else is exactly what I felt (and still feel sometimes) when I hear others talk about their fathers (because mine died). Rugrats always had a way of reaching because it didn't shy away from reality.

It's heavily implied that Angelica is a jerk more so because her father lets her get away with so much rather than because of her mother's personality. The strongest example of this is in the halloween episode when we see how Angelica's father disciplines her for sneaking candy by himself vs. when her mother's watching him.

Rug rats was a horrific entity. Essentially all of nickelodeons content is bizarrely subversive & has tons of grotesque hidden meaning laced throughout its hideous & nauseating animation. As a European, seeing the heIIscape that murican children are/were subjected to is unsettling to the core. It’s no wonder that area of the world is such a dystopian frightmare. I feel sorry for anyone who had their child brain muddled by the creeps at freaking Nickelodeon

When I was little, I was always taught by my friends and their parents that Angelica was so awful because her Mom didn't pay enough attention to her, because she put her job before her child....I wish I hadn't always thought that growing up. It's hard to re-think the situation now, as a grown woman and Mom myself. Does anyone else get what I'm trying to say here? :/

I get that. I got that with Miss Piggy from The Muppets, from one particular "auntie" for a few years. I was watching some animated version and was like, "hold up" she's not being evil or whatever. Then I asked my parents, and they set me straight and - turns out we never had that "auntie" over again! I know I was lucky. But they didn't bother to tell me until I asked about it like 15 years later - and I wish they had! I would've definitely benefitted emotionally, and probably my critical thinking skills too 😅 *sigh *

15:19-15:22: You're slightly incorrect. Angelica was based on co-creator *Paul Germain's* childhood bully, not Gabor Csupo's. In fact, both Angelica and Chuckie were pretty much last minute additions to the cast by Germain soon after "Rugrats" was greenlit.

I'm watching the backlog of your videos belatedly whenever I have time to concentrate and to savour them and this, too, was fantastic watching. I remember Rugrats only faintly though I can't have been terribly young when it aired. I just know all the important stuff you mention here flew over my head back then, or at least I wasn't conscious of any of it! I want to think maybe it did teach me something important about empathy, though, but I feel like I struggled with my Angelica-phase way longer than is in any way defensible. I can remember empathy-teaching fiction from later in life that clearly made me reflect upon my own behavior though. I can also remember lots of fiction from back then that just rubbed me the wrong way and that I still think were bad influence on me, even when the author might have had good intentions. Writing stuff for kids is not easy, I guess!

Great video! We need more shows like Rugrats in today's world. A big reason why I grew up with it is because of the lack of choice in terms of shows for children(Cartoon Network and nickelodeon), but with the internet it is so easy for parents to give kids unfiltered video without thinking about the long term effects of their media consumption. This was such a powerful show and I am so happy I was able to grow up with it and learn from it to help mold my childhood empathy and understanding. I am curious to know if there is something equivalent for kids today.

It was equal parts amusing and heartwarming to hear Maggie lament on how another KZfaqr that she's acting envious of has 100,000 subs. T'was a neat little reminder that even a channel as quality as this (which at time of writing is at roughly 166,000 subs) has to start from 0.

Never realized how much that show influenced me, and I was smack in the age to understand both the baby and grown up perspectives being 5-6 when it was on.

I DID THAT WARHEADS THING TOO Seriously you could see each individual taste bud on my tongue because they were all dead and grotesquely enlarged, I was miserable for WEEKS but I destroyed all challengers. It very, very much wasn't worth it and sort of informed my life moving forward. Taught me winning was less important than not being fuckin' miserable. The purple ones hurt the most.
