Musician Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the former BBC Young Musician of the Year and cellist at Meghan and Harry's wedding has revealed he didn't stay until the end of the event as he didn't want to be there when the crowd sang 'Rule, Britannia!' He went on to say that it should not be performed, and there are so many other great pieces of music which could replace it. Kanneh-Mason said it leaves a lot of people feeling uncomfortable, even if they feel good singing it.
So, is it time to ditch this anthem at public events?

It seems these days everything British from our culture to our patriotism is offensive to someone. Where does this end? Are we supposed to stop existing to make some people happy? It seems to me that people are finding rascism in literally everything we do past and present. Rule Britannia should not be gotten rid of. The past is the past let it stay in the past. History shows the evolution of how we learn from our mistakes.

Why is this uncomfortable? My grandparents moved to this country for a better life and I'm so glad they did. I'm proud to be British and as a POC it is NOT racist to be proud of our country. We're a very diverse country and its wonderful but stop trying to change to culture and make the country something different. It's issues like this that cause racial division and we don't need anymore of that.

And whilst I agree every country has done some wrongs in the past and some present, but if we keep living in the past, how do we move forward together? And we must remember whilst slavery (which is one the worst things to happen) by the British, American etc to the Africans, the Africans to the Portuguese, is disgraceful, lets learn from our mistakes and not repeat them. I say that and my ancestors were colonised by the British.

Saying that something makes them feel uncomfortable is just a new tactic to force people to give in to their demands. It is not highlighting slavery, that's not what it's even about.

Simples as the meerkats in Australia would say: if you feel uncomfortable, make sure you’re on the end of a row and leave before that section of the last night starts. We were always singing “Land of Hope and Glory” in primary and I loved it and still do. I am not and never have been an anglophile, but never once did I feel uncomfortable singing about another country’s praises of its colonialism

Its worth remembering that this was written in the 1700s, a time when Britain was often under threat attack by others. After the failed armada in the 1500s, the Dutch got as far as Upnor Castle in Kent in the 1600s. (Samuel Pepys buried his gold in his garden in case they got as far as London.) The Navy was always under threat at sea and don't forget the white slavers who snatchedn people from our shores on more than one occasion and then the Napoleonic wars when Spain allied with the French. I think if people knew these facts they might understand the wording of Rule Brittania, written at a time when we needed a strong Navy.

No, it only makes a small group of activists uncomfortable and that’s the truth of the matter but if they shout loud enough the rest of society normally gives in…Once again people are pushing their ideas with no real understanding of history. The song is patriotic - end of subject! Much of the bad behaviour from minority groups makes very many people more than a little uncomfortable too but still we try to understand what has created such attitudes and do not penalise such folk. Tolerance must go both ways if society is ever to fully integrate.

Remind me why a song celebrating a win over the Vikings by King Alfred some 1000 and a bit years ago preventing them from CAPTURING AND SELLING BRITONS AS SLAVES is offensive in the 21st C. Maybe some people need to learn the origins of the song and exactly what it refers to (and when it was written for that matter). It celebrates KING ALFRED THE GREAT and his victory over the vikings, I rather hate to think what some rather ignorant people actually think it refers to, I suspect they are being a) insulting and b) showing their ignorance - and that includes this musician who obviously hasn't bothered to even look and see where or when the song originated let alone WHAT IT IS REFERRING TO.

I am sick and tired of this nonsense. Yes Britian was involved in slavery,like every other powerful country back then (Spain,France,Portugal,Germany,Belgium,Netherland,USA)but Britain was also the first to abolish it. Why don't they talk about that?

The male news presenter explained the meaning behind the words of the song and the guest still thinks it should be banned because it was written when slavery existed? Ive heard it all now. They are nkt doing themselves any favours are they really.

You could also argue that the lyrics were anti slavery The British fought around the world to end slavery and fought west Africans to stop slavery

What about the Barbary Coast Pirates raiding southern England taking men, women & children from the village streets & homes? Lots of USA Cotton slaves were importing black African slaves themselves after their six years indenture. Given a plot of land & farmed cotton themselves. Anthony Johnson for instance shipped in hundreds, the profits went on more land & his own slaves were often not released after their six years, He was a very rich black guy.. What about the music they sang? Should "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" be banned? Was it a racist song against Land Owners??

Nothing wrong with "Rule Britannia", it's a song that's all. Personally, I think the national anthem should be changed from "God Save the King" to "Land of Hope and Glory", I just think it's a better song. But how anyone could be offended by a song is baffling.

So, if a minority of people don't like Rule Britannia, that is reason enough to deprive those who do enjoy the song and who know it's not about slavery. The ignorance of some people seems to be wilfully unbound. Sing it loud and proud.

Classic example of why commentators should do their due diligence before taking a position in front of the nation. Femi didn't do his research, then had to defend the indefensible after being told the truth about the origins of the song, then actively lied about it later as a means of doing this.
