I don't think they dated as kids but having a similar background and values certainly gives them a better chance at a good marriage and they are very dedicated eventhough Mumford says marriage is also not effortless. It's good he realizes that. He's gone through a terrible time and he needs that grounding. A farm is also a daily grind, especially with lambing which happens round the clock and needs humans t pay attention.
