A lot of younger kids wont get a lot of the references in the video as it was a different time period. The guy that was trying to stop Run-DMC from entering the RnR Hall of Fame was a regular character on the Late Show with David Letterman. (Can't remember his name offhand but he was a regular) David Letterman was a New Yorker and supported Run-DMC so when they made the video, they used the actor to play the front door clerk/guard in the intro. He was supposed to represent MTV when they weren't open to playing black music videos. Around that time, David Bowie was interviewed on MTV and Bowie put MTV on the spot and asked them live on air why they were avoiding playing black videos and embarrassed the MTV host. After the video "King of Rock" came out, Run-DMC was working on a movie (Krush Groove) to further push and promote the album. They also were the only rap group that performed at "Live Aid" back to back with the biggest RnR groups at that time but their performance at the show supposedly wasn't aired on TV which further proved their anger to be legit. A year later, they blew up with their biggest selling album and dropped the iconic "Walk this Way" video and MTV couldn't ignore them anymore.

They are one of only a few rap groups in the Rock & Roll hall of fame. The little guy, I remember him from David Letterman.. It's really amazing how many people David Letterman highlighted, especially rappers. Don't steel any Run DMC lyrics, all of us that been around for them KNOW, trust me. When they busted out, it was like a middle finger to the "disco rappers" and we loved it. They were "hard" in comparison.

The thing is, back in the day, you mostly had to have talent in the music industry to have success. There wasn't too many gimmick acts back in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. And you are right, there was really no cursing in early rap until Public Enemy, NWA, and the whole "gangsta rap" movement happened. There was some cursing here and there, but it was pretty clean for the most part. But nowadays, you can have success just from having a gimmick, just look at 69 and the whole mumble rap movement. There isn't any real talent. You can pick up anybody, dress them like a clown, have them act like a clown and these kids buy it right up
