Have you ever wanted to run Windows 95 in the palm of your hand? Well now you can, not only that but it's super simple!
Emulation on a Pocket PC is nothing new but now you can emulate an x86 and run the desktop operating system of your choice... but lets start easy with Windows 95 and it's supremely low system requirements!
Huge thanks goes to @uploadgeek (who contacted me after seeing the video) who created the image and originally uploaded everything to reddit before taking it down again.

You’re certainly not just talking to yourself here ❤ I enjoy your content a lot and I think there’s actually no comparison to your channel here on KZfaq. The dawn of Handheld computing was super fascinating to me at the time, and I love to see it covered so entertainingly here! I‘m glad you’re putting in all this time and effort to make these wonderful Videos for us 🤗

Subsequently, Fujitsu released a dual-boot phone that ran Symbian or Windows 7. It was called the LOOX F07C but I'm not sure it was sold outside of Japan. People have run Linux and Win 10 on it, although I don't know if anyone got these to run "well".
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 10 ай бұрын
Yes they did, only in Japan I think. The closest we came was the HTC shift which ran Windows Mobile and (I think) Vista - it had an 800Mhz pentium M I think so wouldn't have been fast

I think you meant WM 2003SE, not 2002SE (i dont think it even exists). Also, im sure that Acer N300 has 400Mhz Samsung CPU, not 300. I have noticed that, for unknown reasons, Samsung ARM CPU's are much snappier than higher clocked Intel counterparts in all graphics-related operations, probably the reason for performance difference. Lastly, this is nice as a demo but not really useful. Maybe HTC HD2 would be up to the task?
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 10 ай бұрын
You are correct its WM 2003SE!!! Silly me! The N300 is defo 300Mhz or at least the one I have is. Yes there was a comment saying that the boot time was ~30sec on the HTC HD2 and 3 sec to launch solitaire so similar speed to my Libretto CT50. I do wonder how useable it would be with a capacitive screen though!
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 8 ай бұрын
So it turns out that there was an Acer N310 which does have the 400Mhz CPU which explains the confusion - also I need to try and get one 😉

I tried shutting down to ms-dos and then set it to boot directly into dos. That worked. It’s not as slow. I have a HTC Advantage. I tried to get my Bluetooth keyboard to connect but it didn’t want to pair and the tiny keyboard is slow to use.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 10 ай бұрын
I bet it was reasonably snappy running DOS, will have a play at the weekend. Dosbox is probably a better option for DOS though. Weird that you couldn't connect the BT keyboard I wonder if the CPU was just maxed out so couldn't cope with the BT connection? Yeah that tiny keyboard isn't great...

@@HandheldComputing The problem was that Windows Mobile 6 kept wanting a PIN code for the keyboard. I tried no passcode, 0000 and 1111. No passcode started to work, asked me the device type and then re-asked for a PIN code and would’nt accept a blank pin.
@HandheldComputing
@HandheldComputing 10 ай бұрын
That's weird, does the BT keyboard work normally? I would try 1234 as a pin code too as that's a common default

@HandheldComputing

Good point, should be easy enough to create a Win3.1 img file, faster still would be Win3.0 running on pocket DOS (no emulation needed), there are even mouse drivers for the touch screen available 😃

It runs pretty fast on a HTC HD2. Less than 50 seconds to boot and Solitaire takes a bit less than 3 seconds to load

Thats got to be close to running on OG hardware. How do you find the capacitive screen for using Win 95 on such a small device? Are you using a stylus or managing with your finger?

@@Kuba38OwO WM2003/SE is just a lot more efficient, there's loads of bloat in WM5/6. If you are OK with flashing new ROMs you could look on XDA developers as there was a very active community producing custom ROMs for the Advantage and maybe one of those will be faster
