Running With Cameras

A few years before Scott Reiland turned 40 he set a goal to run a marathon before hitting that pivotal birthday. After a few six mile runs and an ill-advised 15 miler, he had a sore knee and found himself "burying a package of thin mints" on the couch. He never did accomplish that marathon goal before turning 40, but three years later, he properly trained and found himself lining up for the first annual "Cheap Marathon" run by Green Stride Races in Salisbury, Massachusetts.
This is story of Scott's journey through 26.2 miles of pain, freezing temperatures, an incredible cheering squad, and ultimate triumph.

Amazing story, best marathon vlog I’ve seen. I will be running my first marathon in March (Los ANGELES marathon) at age 41. I’d like to finish it in under 4 hours but based on everything I’ve read and seen My goal should be to finish. Great job and thanks for the motivation!

Good luck with your first marathon! I think it’s always good to have multiple goals (even a few non performance ones- high five a bunch of kids, make it to the starting line fairly healthy). First marathon- I agree, main goal to finish, but nothing wrong with a time goal to keep you moving when it hurts. Good luck!

Congratulations. What an awesome effort. Loved watching this video. I can relate to so much of this as I only started running at the age of 41 years old myself. Don't think any first time marathon runners should set a time target. The only real goal should be the finish line. Nutrition is a key part of any marathon preparation. We're all learning and all make mistakes. I'm sure you'll take the experiences of your first and make your next marathon a more comfortable experience. Congratulations once again and big respect for raising 4,000 dollars for such a worthy cause. Ps. I have fallen a couple of times during marathons. Those little bumps can feel like mountains when you’re tired. It completely knocks the stuffing out of you. Main thing is you were able to dust yourself down and finish.

Anyone can run a marathon it just depends how much pain you want to be in. But saying that I have respect for everyone who competes no matter what the time shows when they cross the line. I have done 8 and still have not cracked my sub 4 goal.

Hi Scott, I just wanted you to know I’m getting ready to run my first Marathon and your video has been a huge inspiration to me. I’ve watched it several times. It really gives me hope! I started out three years ago joining Weight Watchers and riding a Mountain Bike. I dropped 125 lbs. I became interested in 5K’s from other members coming to WW. That progressed to 10K races and now I’m going to do a Marathon, in four days. It was said I should have done a Half Marathon first, so in the last month I did 4 Half Marathons on my own! I’m also 61 years and I truly believe it’s never too late as long as you train and believe in yourself and give it all you got! Thank you Scott! 😎👍

Congratulations on your success in running your first marathon for a great cause too. I ran my first marathon (the London Marathon) without any preparation in 2003 and hit the wall at 15 miles, there after walking and running the last 11 miles. I finished with my legs like lead balloons and it took a week to recover with little sleep for two days due to pain. I ran my second marathon (a virtual marathon) in 2020 (with a slower time). I am now to train, ensure I have the right nutrition so that my next marathon in 2021 is better. Preparation, training and nutrition is key.

Thanks for this awesome motivation. I will be running my first marathon by Feb 2020 a month before I turn 44 and I'm so excited. I've run a couple 10ks and one 21k race before tho, the idea of running a 42k still scare the shit outta me, lol. But I know I have to do it, I can do it even if it takes 5hrs. I wish I can finish at 4hrs. This video just gave me the inspiration I need. Thanks.

great video and great inspiration! I'm almost 41 myself (2 months to go) and just signed up for my first half and full marathon (in 2020), but am already on a training schedule.. i've done two HM in training (with my third one being planned this week). when you mentioned that there'll be people finishing the marathon an hour and a half before you, and an hour and a half after you, this reminded me of one of my very first races (earlier this year, so i haven't been running for long), where about a km into a 5 mile race, a spectator just stood there and shouted "run at your own pace! run at your own pace!" to the group of runners. That's when it clicked for me to just let faster people pass and not focus on them, but just run based on how i feel. Definitely something that helped me, as i was obviously going out way too fast with all the excitement around me, and being inexperienced as it was my first or second event ever.
