RuPaul Explains His Decision to Move to New York in 1984

On a street outside the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan during the New Music Seminar, RuPaul issued this video statement concerning his decision to move from Atlanta to New York City. As seen on The American Music Show.

They both earned everything. Rupaul is magnificent. And so informed and smart on Drag Race. We should be so lucky to know Her / History like Rupaul does. I'm an illustrator and all the time when I feel tired, sleepy, depressed i watch Drag Race and literally feel inspired and energized. RU-MAZING!

Well it's 1984...Madonna was still somewhat underground came out with first record probably a year earlier on Sire/Warner records. At this point Madonna was mostly played on black radio with back audiences.

it is so powerful to hear Ru say that he was going to take off like a stick of dynamite. i am reminded of madonna going on american bandstand in the early 80's and say she was going to rule the world! what an inspiration to know what you want in life and just go out and take it!

@@obsidiansea In the 80’s it was very, very dangerous to be gay. A man had to be able to pass as straight in any moment. There was no such thing as mainstream “out.” Ru is actually very brave in these nelson videos. Of course one was a bit more safe in nyc but still.

👍😍It seems he has always had the “it” factor. He was speaking abundance, success and prosperity over his life!!! Proof that it is important to be careful what you speak over your life. I’ve only recently started taking an in-depth look at him and to really pay attention to him after I started watching the Nelson Sullivan videos of him in the late 80s. He is a beautiful person. Bless him. 💞

Why feel hurt, it's what made Rupaul, Rupaul. We all have those hurt feelings, but it's what you do with it, that either makes you, or breaks you. He simply didn't care or listen, and did what he simply wanted too.

I remember him from my days in Atlanta, he was always very nice. On the weekend he would sell baseball card size post cards of himself for 50 cents. He would tell people one day I am going to be a BIG 🌟⭐🌟⭐ ! You did it RU 🌠🌠

I have never seen Rupauls drag race, but have been watching these old videos plus listening to his music. What an inspiration he is to me now that I see where he started! Makes me realize most of these "artists" try to hide their past because they were born rich, and instead of working hard took lots of shortcuts. If they didn't hide their rich roots, that would mean they weren't ashamed of where they came from and know they still worked hard. There's a few like that, but most fall into the temptation and it shows through their work and extreme cover up attempts at old footage.

Oh man our Mamma had class ALLLLLLLLLWAYS .. so polite & well spoken. So at ease with the limelight (no pun intended promise) So easily speaks to whom ever. He has been my hero for so long, but if I hadn't seen ALLLLLL these amazing videos from 80' & early90's .. (he was on Telly in Aust by mid 90's) I wouldn't have half the respect that I do now ... and it's a lot. But I wanna hear that music!!!? When Ru talks about his bands I think I imagined something different .. the track playing in the back round is amazing!!? So funky! Ru Paul & Prince make me flood my basement hunty! I just love both their styles. The androgyny has always turned me on. My first love for a man in a wig was when I was about 6 for Tim Curry in Rocky Horror. I never questioned it. My family is insane & had friends who looked like these people so I just went along with my feelings. Just as I'm writing this now I'm thinking .. oooh is that why the other mummy's & daddy's didn't want me playing with their kid? :( Sad .. but lol I get it. Love you Mamma Ru, Thankyou for continuing to inspire us in rewind😬🙌❤️
