In the 70s, Neil wrote great songs about fictional things. Starting with Permanent Waves in 1980, he switched to mostly writing about real things and real people, and the songs got more relatable and more powerful. It's such a powerful song, and Geddy's singing makes it such a powerful statement 👏 I know you get trouble doing live stuff, but you should watch them doing this in concert. Watching the three of them do this live and sound just like the album is mind-blowing 🤯
@philduoos29612 жыл бұрын
While Neil writes the lyrics, Geddy mentions in an interview that he has to feel them too. Sometimes it takes Neil some time to explain them. And sometimes Geddy interprets them in his own way so he can "own" the lyrics and sing them with passion. (Hmm - isn't that the way it is with ALL music?) Also they need to be singable! Geddy said sometimes none of Neil's original lyrics make it! But the idea does. Geddy says something like "And Neil is so gracious. I think even if we don't use them, he is just happy that somebody read them."
@michaelbriefs97642 жыл бұрын
Jamel, this is one of my favorite Rush songs. It all really comes together on this song (just like it does on Tom Sawyer): the lyrics are amazing and they drive Geddy to new heights of soaring melody and intensity; Alex unleashes his searing tremelo bar pyro-technics and deep emotion to the lead and opening/closing sections; Neil is playing/driving/accenting like it's his last chance to make his mark in the world. This is a band on top of their game, telling the world to wake up! The Grace Under Pressure (GUP) album is a real "dark horse" in the catalog. It is dark of theme and tone. It has cutting edge Keyboard/synth effects (ala, proto-industrial; just ask Trent Reznor) and electronic drums (for the first time). It has a very guitar-forward style and mix -- Alex was making a statement after he was under-represented on the preceding Signals album. The band was really trying to prove themselves again, in a post-Moving Pictures world. Sure, they had become an Arena-act, consistently selling out the largest "Barns" in the world but the music they themselves were listening to was inspiring them to keep their sound fresh, urgent and relevant. The news of the times was much on their minds and in Neil's lyrics. Not only that, but the process of making GUP was brutal for the guys. They actually came close to calling it quits during the making of that album and the tension and passion really shows through, especially on songs like Between The Wheels. Great stuff!

Welcome to Grace Under Pressure. It's an album that will leave you weak-kneed and shell-shocked with more than half the songs on it. This same album has the WWII epic "Red Sector A" on it, as well as Afterimage and Distant Early Warning. Love the use of early century (20th) imagery on the song. "Lost generation" was what the WWI veterans were called, "Bowl of Dust" refers to the Dust Bowl in the midwestern states in the 20's-30's, and "Brother Can You spare" was a Depression era song from the 30's, and the mention of "cathode rays" immediately brings images of old black & white TVs and oscilloscopes from the late 40's and early 50's.

This brings me back to the year the album was released. For me it was in high school, living on a military base that trained Canadian Air Force personnel to watch for potential ICBMs coming from the USSR. The music at the beginning of this one was similar to a warning sound we heard during bomb drills. Yes, it was during the Cold War. A good portion of us on that base wore out vinyl and cassette tapes of this album. Rush was a band that made us think as we listened. The lyrics didn’t preach at us, but challenged us to think. And unlike some of the glossy video driven pop music of the time, it didn’t talk down to us. I used to listen to the entire album without skipping songs. This album had the most emotional impact on me as a teen. Probably because of the daily reminders of the proximity of potential war. Not many of my high school peers felt it like I did. We military brats were a minority in our schools. I do confess one of my favourites was Red Sector A from this album. But part of that is knowing Geddy Lee had a grandparent who survived a concentration camp in WW2. The song personalized for me what was only lines written in a history boo. Made me feel a bit what it might have been like to be there. And it was where I started to reread history books and do more than rote learning of dates and places and names of leaders. It’s where I started to think deeper if the people living at those times. Rush was that kind of band. As always, I love this channel best of all the reaction videos. Jamel, it is a genuine pleasure to get notifications that new videos are up. Thank you again.
@robertpinazza40432 жыл бұрын
Great story here, thanks for sharing! FYI, Geddy’s parents were both survivors of the German holocaust, and actually met in a concentration camp when they were preteen. Amazing to think Geddy came out of that miracle, where both survived while other family members perished. Btw, GUP was my first Rush concert in ‘84 and I too wore out 3 cassettes that year; couldn’t get enough of it. These songs are imprinted on my mind and soul and clearly remember the horrors of possible nuclear war. Peace and health to you both in 2022.

Love the 80's "synth era" (by the way, as an old bass player, I can tell you that, as a whole, Geddy's best bass playing on albums was done during this so called "synth era"). The albums Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and the much maligned (and unfairly so) Hold Your Fire (Niel Peart's favorite), all of them a masterpiece in their own right. Rush in their PRIME! Would love to see you do more reactions to Rush from this era Jamel. I'm sure you'd dig it. "Digital Man" and "The Analog Kid" from Signals would be good or "Big Money" from Power Windows. Thanks for doing this one from Grace Under Pressure! Cheers and Merry Christmas good man!

"Hold Your Fire," the album as a whole and the title track specifically, compelled me to reassess my life at that point: "Is entertainment industry PR really what I would choose to be doing and is LA really where I would choose to be, or have I been just "flowing in and out like the tide?' What about those "children growing up, old friends growing older'?"
@marctowersap80182 жыл бұрын
totally agree with you! I neglected Hold Your Fire, I was transitioning away from Rush towards punk and alt when it came out, saw the 'times stands still' video, thought it was a good song at the time, but just didn't give it a chance till decades later, put it on when I went jogging maybe 10 years ago, and re-discovered my love of Rush and this disk, long neglected by me, and loved pretty much every song. I've been a RUSH fan since I first heard them ca. 1978 so, basically since I was 10 years old and even against all the fantastic "classic" RUSH songs from that era this is ABSOLUTELY my favorite RUSH tune. This song is really deep, even for RUSH. The quote from "The Sun Also Rises" (published in 1929 relating to events in Hemingway's life from a 1925 trip) is just one of many references in this song to the era leading to and of the great depression, "Dreams to a bowl of dust" refers to agricultural boom and bust leading to the great dust bowl of the 30s, "brother can you spare another war.." is both a play on the song "Brother can you spare a dime?" which was written in 1931 to try to raise people's hopes during the great depression of the 30s and a reference to the fact that the true end of the great depression came about due to the wartime industrial boom of the 40s

I saw them perform 'Between the wheels' on Rush's 'Snakes & Arrows' tour '07/ '08.... the song was released in 1984, when Rush was making the transition into the 80's and experimenting w/ synthesizers and electronic beats on the 'Grace under pressure' record. Despite their 80's records underselling, compared to their 70's and early 80's peak, Rush would continue on that path until 1987...Lifeson's guitars made a return in 1989 on the 'Presto' record.

As you mentioned, "Lost Generation" was a phrase coined by Gertrude Stein to describe post WWI writers and poets (Hemmingway, TS Eliot, Steinbeck etc). In fact "another wasteland" is a reference to TS Eliot’s The Wasteland. “Dreams to a bowl of dust” ie.. the dustbowls in the 30’'s depicted in the Grapes of Wrath. ‘Brother can you spare a dime’ was a depression era song. Peart's lyrics are very dense and chock full of references.

Can't believe you are reacting to this! I have been a Rush fan for a long time, but I always skipped past this one for YEARS when I'd hear that intro. When I finally listened to it, I was hooked. The music is great, but the lyrics are maybe my favorite of any song.

Grace Under Pressure was the first "new" to me Rush album i bought on release day in 84 after i became a fan in the early 80s, so this whole record always has a special place for me. Hearing/seeing "Between the Wheels" live the first time was unbelievable. Great song and great reaction!

One of my favorite Rush songs. I was blessed to see Rush 4 times...once on this tour, twice on Hemispheres and once on Shoots and Ladders. The best 3 man rock band of all time! RIP, Neil wrote some of the best lyrics of all time. A true poet of our times. RIP, Proifessor!

I'm SO glad you featured this song. It's brilliant both musically and lyrically. Between The Wheels and Pink Floyd's Time have always been the "canary in the coalmine" songs about not taking a single moment of your life for granted to me. The former warning my young teenage self decades ago that life comes at all of us fast and you will experience countless ups and downs - but time will march on with or without you, so get moving. I just turned 50 this year and I'm so glad I've had Rush with me along the way. I have their music on everything from 8-track to MP3 and have seen them many times live since the mid 80's. There are a LOT of amazing bands out there, but as far as Rush is concerned, there is no equal.

Brief additional notes - hope you see them. Here's a list of the literary allusions in the song. The "Lost Generation" referred to World War I vets with what we would now call PTSD. Stein was talking about the young writers and artists she knew. (WW I was a much bigger deal in Canada than in the USA.) "Brother can you spare" is a reference to the 1930s depression-era song, "Brother can you spare a dime?" about a down-and-out (yes) "World War I" vet. "Rockets' red glare" (in case you didn't recognize it) is a quote from the US national anthem. "Waste land" may - may! - be a reference to, again, the depressed post-World War I TS Eliot poem of that title.

RUSH has been my favorite Band for 40 years. I was incredibly lucky to have seen them more times than I can remember and even luckier to have met 2 of the 3. I really enjoy your reaction videos. If you have never heard them you really should check out FATES WARNING. Perfect Symmetry or A Pleasant Shade of Grey would be a great place to start. I think that you would get into them as well. Keep up the good work!!!

Neils writing as far as I am concerned is unmatched! This song talks about them mistakes that society makes over and over again. Going from Rockets red glare ,war, to brother can you spare… Poverty. Another war another wasteland another lost generation. The cycle. Neil was, and is, up there with some of the great philosophers, period…. Like , a windshield towards a fly. Think about that one! The machine flying Down the road towards us, the fly.
