Alex: That song is from our Grace Under Pressure album ... This was the last solo I did, a real difficult piece, and it was composed totally in the studio. The solo section starts with that one held note, and I kept thinking, "Okay, what the hell am I going to do?" ... It was a real challenge. I spent a long time on that and was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Again, it was one of those situations where you go crazy-just do something. Each section of the solo led into the next; it ended up working quite well ... It's like it knew what it wanted to be and I just had to allow myself to follow. We ended up co-producing the Grace Under Pressure album with Peter Henderson. So we were working a lot more on that record. We were in the studio for months during a very cold, snowy winter in Quebec; it's a mystery to me why it took so long. We were so prepared and had twice as long as usual to write, rehearse, arrange, and refine the material. We were so confident that we thought it would take us five days. It wasn't like we were bogged down or held up against the wall in the studio; it just took a while to get the sounds ... But in the end, there’s something about the sound and the power and the quality of the songwriting that really strikes me. I really love that record ... I even played some keyboards. I thought it was a really important and unique part of what Rush was becoming.

I'm right there with you!! This is my favorite. Grace Under Pressure was not my favorite, but Neil's lyrics, his drumming, and Alex's guitar setup on this song are awesome. I remember Alex saying at the time he thought he finally got the sound he'd been pursuing for years. Unfortunately they didn't include in their setlist much after the 80's.

Perfect example of Alex playing Rhythm AND lead simultaneously and making it sound better than two players. And what are those sounds during the solo? Have you ever heard of guitar? Make a sound like that before? Not very often. Genius.

harmonics, innit. but yes, the solo is the off the wall, and still manages to be melodic as fuck.

People praise La Villa for its solos. I argue that THIS is one of Alex's best ever. He can shred and do everything that all the heavy hitters can do, BUT Alex can also write one hell of a song that sounds good on top of that.

I agree! My favorite Alex Lifeson solo! I think this solo perfectly captures Alex's zaniness, silliness, and comicality perfectly. Rush rules!!

I think it's one of his best too, always puts a smile on my face. Alex said a few times that it was his second favourite (after Limelight). Apparently the solo has a plot, some sort of story that he imagines when he plays it. I would love to know what that is - and also why this awesome song only got played for the second half of one tour!
@dannyropero42168 ай бұрын
@jo77866 on the Shred with Swifty podcast (youtube it, it's awesome) Alex describes that solo. In another interview, he described that solo: "it’s got a hip, kind of slinky attitude, a little goofy humour,” Rush rules!!

Because of the utterly LUDICROUS backlash there is about this period, 'cOz kEyBoArDs!', a stunning work of art like this song somehow remains underrated and underappreciated, even by Rush 'fans'. It's just so ridiculous.

I saw Rush in 1979 for the hemispheres tour and fell in love for decades. The energy, emotion in Alex’s playing made every solo an event. When albums came out we were always excited to hear what he was going to do. This tour was amazing. I’ve seen them about 38 times. I lost count, but in in the early years I was seeing them three and four times per tour. Alex is the most unique guitarist on earth. It almost like he’s being funny when he plays. He makes the guitar laugh and scream, and squelch. #1 rock guitarist of all time.

I never noticed this before, probably because I have not listened to this song in many years, but that solo is very "Power Windows" esque. There's almost always a song, or maybe a solo, or something on each album which gives a hint of the next album's overall sound. And the fact that this was the last solo created for this album reinforces that.
@michaelbarton8884 ай бұрын
Grace from what I understand nearly tore the band apart and Power Windows is a reaction to that. Take it for what it’s worth.

The entire Grace Under Pressure album was really good. I listened to that album again and again and again. I didn't stop listening to it until I couldn't play the album anymore. The whole time complaining that the weren't like the old Rush anymore. I didn't know it at the time, but I was becoming just as addicted to the new sound as I was the old. Later in their career when they started sliding back to the old, old sound, I found myself complaining that they didn't sound like the old 90's Rush. You just can't please everyone. Rush was truly a legendary band no matter what they played throughout their career; I couldn't get enough of them.

Great reaction! My favorite so far and I've been through a bunch of yours. Grace Under Pressure is a very underrated album, but it captures a unique new wave'ish boldness we don't see in other Rush production. A very transitional sound trying to balance back the synths with the rock trio. Tidbit: towards the end, in the last 2 or 3 bars, Neil modifies the pattern with a reference to the previous song, The Body Electric

This song was thrown together at the last minute. They needed one more track of a certain length (I think they called it project 3:57) to make the 2 sides of the album equal length (or for the cassette tape, as this was before CD technology. If ai recall, Lifeson came up with it and did a demo, which he played for the other two in Neil's driveway? Not entirely sure, but something along these lines. But it was not written before going into the studio with the others. It was an afterthought. But a great track, mostly in 5-4 time. Who else writes pop songs in odd time signatures? Though Salisbury Hill (Peter Gabriel) is in 7-4, and very cool.

It’s funny. Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Signals is the period where older hard rock and progressive fans dropped off. Keyboards were so much part of pop and new wave, that rockers were turned off, in the same way classic rockers were turned off by diso in the 70’s. Rush were an anomaly. They could take any style of music and incorporate into their sound and if you really bothered to listen, it was still Rush. It was still progressive. It was still three amazing musicians. It was still people who believed in the craft and did their thing. Yep! That’s Rush!

Guys, I'm not sure this song, Kid Gloves, completely expresses the GRIND the band was going through at this time. If you haven't heard it already, you should listen to "Between the Wheels", from the same album, next. That song is what I call "Dark Glory". It's metal, industrial, progressive, alternative, new wave, and a whole lot of getting their YA-YA's out! It will melt you. // ** Oh, you DID do the live version! OK...well, you should do the studio version too. The guitar lead that Alex lays down on the album is so perfect. The song is so good from the studio recording that it bares repeating! :)
