This is specifically a Cantonese accent and not a mainland accent. Back in the early 2000s, there were far more Hong Kongers in Toronto than mainlanders. 1 HK$ was 5 RMB at the time. Now it's vice versa on both those counts

That is exactly what happened to him. It's hard to keep up when they forget the streets and life gets too confortable. I knew one comedian who managed to keep on top for 30 years because he always had new material, every single year he had new stuff. He would never go on the same jokes, routine like some of stand up comedians do. He didn't get too comfortable in life either despite of his new founded money. He never left his country either wherehis source of jokes will come from(a 3rd world country). When his country went into the sewer, most comedians from his country left to US and Europe, he did not. He travels worldwide, he always said streets are the source where comedians grab their gold to stay current with latest trends.

About 10 years ago, when he was still on top and he was asked during an interview what he feared the most, he reply "going bankrupt", At that time it sounded ridiculous, even for the host but Russell said "What happens is I have 5 houses". He got too comfortable and lazy and it's normal to become like this with age and money. Problem is you are not funny anymore. I remember myself, living in 6 countries before reaching my 40 Bday, I had a lot to share in reunions and meetings without being a comedian..People would invite me over all the time, just to share some of the many crazy stories and life experiences I had. Guess what, after 4 years, my stories were not funny anymore since I started living a regular life, stop traveling and got settled in just one place. Those People who invited me, grew up in the same city, with the same people surrounding them, their life was so monotonous, boring and flat when they compare it to mine for example. Same thing happens to comedians when they lose their touch.

FYI, HK’s got a local comedian who’s been in the standup comedy act since 1990. His name is Dayo Wong they call him the God of Canto standup comedy. No disrespect to Russell but gotta shout out for Hongkies. Both Russell and Dayo are my favs

I'm sure he has a reason for not doing skits anymore, maybe just too risky nowadays but he would probably still get big halls booked if he continued to do the same.
