What makes this so particularly frustrating is that RTD’s own Dalek stories got every finicky little nerd detail right about the Daleks, so that we didn’t mind the changed ears, any more than we minded the Classic Who variant of all-terrain Daleks with solar panels, or the 80’s Daleks with stair-transcending lifter disks. Technology advances, and the Daleks are constantly improving themselves, so new ears were well within the bounds of acceptable innovations, since everything else was bog standard Dalek chic. Which makes this particular instance seem all the more slapdash by comparison. RTD went so far as finally to regularize the Daleks’ ear sparks, which In Classic Who had been more or less random. There were many things about RTD’s run I disagreed strongly about, but his Daleks were absolutely on point. It just doesn’t seem so difficult to spend a few extra pounds getting the ears right.

Steven Moffat later said that he’d ‘chickened out’ with _Asylum of the Daleks_ - the presence of classic props in _The Magician’s Apprentice_ was his form of apologising to the fans. I think he chickened out by not using the paradigms in that story, personally :P

@alexsimpkin5620 to be fair...there is a difference in actual politics and woke adgenda pushing. All these listed stories didn't push adgendas so overtly as modern dr who does. We will see won't we.

@@lepterfirefall The Daleks are an allegory for fascism and racial supremacy, the Sontarans are a parody of colonialism and imperialism, the enemy of the Green Death wasn't the giant flies, but a computer called the BOSS, the Autons represent socialty fear over plastics, the stories of Peladon are about England joining the European Union, and the Doctor corrects Jo Grant about using incorrect pronouns when referring to Alpha Centauri. One of the writers of classic Doctor Who was a literal card carrying member of the communist party. The Doctor is an antifascist, non-binary, gender fluid, vegan who travels through time and space to overthrow tyrants. The Doctor is left-wing, it's always strived to be progressive, and it has always been woke.
