When the air stinks, drinking water is brown, and snow is black - something isn't right. People from three different regions of Russia explain the struggles they face due to pollution.
Russia is facing a number of environmental issues. The air around one of its biggest landfills is thick, causing problems for residents in the area. Over in Kiselyovsk in Siberia, people are having to walk through snow so polluted by coal from a mine that it has turned black. And in the city of Krasnodar in the south, tap water often comes out brown. Who would want to live in such conditions? These three examples from different areas in Russia are all extreme in their own right, yet together they paint a picture of a country marked by pollution.

Russia is vast and diverse. Even in the very far east the last patches of true wilderness are threatened by pollution and environmental impacts. When our crew was out in the wild filming the last Siberian tigers, it became quite clear that hunting & poaching is not their main threat anymore.

@@moniranik5674 I mean ye before they did, but now its really just Russian leaders themselves doing it to be fair. Like in the colonial times britain tended to side against anyone who got to powerful on the continent and ally with everyone else, they then stopped when Russia got beat by Japan and britain got more scared of Germany. And then it fired back up in soviet times, but now a days Russia could easily cooperate with the west if it wanted to just look at china you don't have to be best friends to not leave your own country in decline economically. So Russia doesn't even have to properly conform to western ideals if it would just focus on its economy instead of fighting its neighbours and having no value added industry, the only thing Russia does nowadays is dig stuff out of the ground which if they use it themselves it literally loses value, Russia is so terribly inefficient right now that if it used its own oil and gas to try and make value added products it would be better to not even take it out of the ground.

Factory owners, greedy oligarchs don't live in Russia. Oligarchs live in countries with warm climates and sail on their mega-yachts, they are not interested in environmental pollution problems. Moreover, investments in the modernization of factories are losses, and losses need to be reduced. The proceeds from the sale of resources are invested in the purchase of estates in England, villas in Spain and penthouses in California.
@happykiwi
@happykiwi 2 жыл бұрын
It seems counterintuitive not to make investments in modernization of factories because upgrades can improve the efficiency of the work being done and replacing people with automated machines has been on the rise to reduce costs. If anything, making investments to modernize factories and similar industries is actually good for cutting costs in the long run because you have less employees to pay and only have to worry about maintenance and utilities expenses. Please explain what you mean because I don't understand.

Crimea belonged to Soviet Russia till 1954, when Khruschev transferred it to Ukraine as a gift to a friendly soviet republic. The latter became -NATO-sided country. No friendship, no Crimea. Once big brother presented it than took it away. Russia is too powerful and mighty even with all its weaknesses and you know this owing to Stalingrad. As for the UN, you probably mean western countries and former soviet satellites which became anti-Russian to the extent of animal hatred. The rest of the world hardly ever interfere with Russian internal affairs and claims its sovereignty over Crimea.

@@vicdor1031 yeah, gift… Let’s also recall that, before, Crimea didn’t have any adequate access to fresh water, therefore after the transfer to Ukraine, Crimean canal was built to bring Dnipro’s water to desalinate soils and to develop the region. And for years it was presented as “gracious” gift to Ukraine, although, now we can see that Ukraine can exist without Crimea, but it is a matter of time how long Crimea will last without Ukrainian water resources.

In St. Petersburg, everyone boils the tap water before drinking due to critters in the water that will cause diarrhea. In Moscow, washing my white cotton clothes caused the fabric to turn sepia. Upon returning home (US), I tried re-washing then bleaching my whites but to no avail. How do Russians keep their white cotton clothes white when the water from the pipes are full of rust?!

I live in Moscow and just use regular washer and regular washing powder (without any whitening stuff), do not have any problems with whities. You can drink tap water and won't get sick but we boil it just to be safe. Though I would not recommend to drink tap water in Moscow since Moscow is a huge city and the water can not be as good as in small towns in the mountains :) However, rust water do may occur especially during short time after central water system was shut of and swittched on back again (if there were maintainance works for example), then the "first flow" is very rusty usually.
