Zeihan on Geopolitics

Жыл бұрын

The Ukrainians and Russians had a hectic weekend, so let's get caught up. On Friday, the Ukrainians used a naval drone (a motorboat loaded with a crap ton of explosives) to hit a Russian vessel in the port of Novorossiysk.

I am from Georgia and often Westerners have no real basis of their clams on politics when it comes to Russia. I believe that Georgia was a playing ground for Russia because it as a country even with completely chaotic internal politics has used the same method of annexation like in Ukraine in 2014. (Locals are rebelling we have no relation to them) and to me having seen that from a country that went through the same thing in 1992 I believe nothing they say because words are just instruments of power to them.Here they did it successfully. Westerners didn’t have the full picture of how rotten it was the Russian state. However you Peter are a person that gives me context on a level that sheds light on Geopolitics in a way that is based in facts and isn’t speculation. Love your videos, there worth more than some college lectures.

Everything we hear is a prediction no matter who says it. We have Ukrainian lies, Russian lies, American lies, nato lies, and people have to dig through all that and compare the numbers to historical data. This is all a guessing game and most of what is happening doesn't match what historically has occurred.

If the European Union were to experience a recession due to rising energy prices, it could lead to changes in governance in many of its member countries. Economic downturns often result in political instability and shifts in power, as citizens may become dissatisfied with their current leaders and seek change. An additional factor that could tip the balance in many EU countries is the potential influx of refugees. The ongoing war in Ukraine is costly and no longer seen as "fun" by some. The World Economic Forum (WEF) is also concerned about losing its influence over the EU. The years 2024-2025 are expected to be eventful.

The problem isn't the declination of the main guns. A DShK is plenty to take care of a fiberglass boat at a safe range. The problem is they don't keep their small arms manned and haven't got their lookouts on station with night vision gear. They don't behave if they're on a wartime footing.

An excellent analysis as always! One point I would like to say though: the threat of small motor boats isn’t new - there have been protocols and plans for defense against them since the late 1970’s. The US defeated several Iranian motorboats during Operation Praying Mantis. Although the missiles and even main guns themselves aren’t always useful, there are more bespoke choices such as 20mm cannons, .50 caliber machine guns, the CIWS guns on the ships (the Gatling guns for shooting down planes) and even hellfire missiles adapted on swivel mounts to engage with small quick moving vessels that lie low on the water. The US Navy and any other competent and effective navy is fully prepared to deal with these threats. Thankfully for Ukraine, the Russian navy is neither competent or effective.
@FamilyManMoving
@FamilyManMoving Жыл бұрын
This. The US Navy is less likely to face a stand-up fight between major-powers naval forces simply because global powers agree they cannot win that fight against the US Navy. Most people do not understand just how absolutely dominate the US Navy has become. So the US re-calibrated a long time ago to also handle "asymmetric actors" - small and (on paper) non-aligned forces that attack using drones or small-boat actions. Drones are the new concern, but the US is already way ahead of adversary tech. As for crewed vessel attacks? The US Navy call those crews, "Darwin Award Winners". The US has automated, and radically sophisticated, defense systems for small-boat and drone attacks and can detect and engage over the horizon. Their only real soft spot is in busy ports and littoral waters, where shooting anything just for looking sketchy is generally frowned upon. It seems the Russians are far, far behind the curve here. And they don't have enough capability to protect all their shipping in the Black Sea, even if they could protect their own warships. If this continues, I expect gas - and everything - to become stupid expensive again.

Honestly Peter Being wrong on some Geopolitic things are completely understandable and atleast in my opinion does not detract from his credibility. Peter might be a bit of a sensationalist from time to time and the things he says we often have to take with a bit of a grain of salt but these are still great! Big picture analysis is really really difficult to determine with any kind of accuracy because there are so so many moving variables. What Peter really does great is his knowledge of what the variables are. Not necessarily the impact of each one. Thanks yet again for another great video Peter!

It's not new for use, we did a bunch of exercises back in the 80's during the Iran-Iraq war regarding the Iranian Boghammars. That resulted it a number of changes, including modifying the CIWS to give it a surface fire mode.

The good news is that our navy already took steps that would counter these drones because of Iran. Granted their drones were 'two dudes in a rubber boat' but the same systems designed to kill the advanced Iranian TDIRB systems should kill drones too.

The Iranians are certainly taking note. The Persian Gulf is an ideal chokepoint for that type of attack. Just like drone warfare came into being over years of refinement in Afghanistan and Iraq, the development of sea drones is the next area as a result of the Ukrainian conflict.

One factor that people seem to ignore consistently is the history of the region. The Turks and the Russians have a long history of conflict with the Russians, including allowing the English and French to stage through Turkey during the Crimean War, when Turkey was still the Ottoman Empire. Prior to that, the Crimean Peninsula was annexed from the Ottomans by Russia in the 18th Century, while Russia was ruled by Catherine the Great, IIRC. The Russians have never had any particular use for the Ottomans or other Turkic speakers, including the Tatars, who had a large population on the Crimean Peninsula and were forcibly removed under Stalin and later USSR leaders. They began to return after Ukraine declared independence in the1990s. I met several there in 1996. Reports from the present indicate that Tatars have once again begun to be forced out of Crimea. This naturally sounds "long ago" to an American, but in that part of the world grudges and feuds are maintained and treasured. Modern Turkey - or the government at least - seems to be leaning toward walking back some of the secularization steps initiated under Ataturk and his successors. Since it was under the Republic that Turkey joined NATO, one way of walking back would be to treat Russia as more of an opportunity. But, Turkey still regards the Black Sea as their sea, and does not like the Russians in it at all.

Early next year (2024) Canada will be increasing the export of the Western Canadian Select that Peter mentioned through the newly built Trans Mountain pipeline. It will increase the oil exports on the West coast to Asia from 300K to 890K barrels a day. Just another FYI that Canada will benefit if Russian oil exports have another restriction to deal with.

@@annewhitney8809 Quite. The necessity of selling at bargain basement prices is mainly to facilitate American pipelines and refineries actually bothering to take your stuff alongside American shale in its own market, but if you're shipping crude to Asia, they'll all be paying a premium (especially the Chinese), so that should work out great for Canada.

Correction, it was not in the port when struck but limped to port listing severly on the starboard side with the assistance of tugs. True it must have been within several miles of the port based upon the time it was pushed into the berth and pinned against it. Either way is a good thing.

Silly speculation about Turkey being involved. The question of "where were these drone-boats launched from?" is a very cogent one. The honest answer is "we don't know". I too, doubt they have the range to come from Odessa.

Good one Zeihan. You promised once Black Sea oil transport became an insurance nightmare things would get interesting fast. Here we go. Spot on on the assist to get the range on the Seado torpedos. Tops they range out at 150-200k with a fuel add. They're not bulletproof and get shot up easily but I'm hearing of a partially submerged version that only shows the antenna above the water. 450kg payload is enough to shut down shipping even with RU escorts. If Ukraine is angling for a chokehold on Crimea to hunker down for winter I predict Russia comes to the table to renew the grain deal in exchange for free sea lanes. If they're balls deep, this triggers a required NATO intervention to escort grain ships from Odessa and RU escorts on shipping from Novodork. It's gonna be a fun fall - the non-existant UA navy vs. the vaunted Black Sea Fleet! "Russian warships: Go F U R self" will become part of the Ukraine national anthem!!
